Blue Jays Discussion: Vladdy has signed 14 yr/500mil

From the farm yesterday:
AAA BUFF great start from Eric Lauer, who’s season numbers are now pretty solid. Signs of life from OMart, now with more singers than Vlad+Bo. Steward Berroa 3-4 with a SB and 2b. Ali Sanchez is the Bisons Heinemann.
AA NH lost both ends of a double dip. Yohendrick Pinango stays hot, 3-6.
A+ VAN lost one late. juaron Watts-Brown struggled but battled. Adrian Pinto hit his fourth HR.
A DUN got knocked around again.

From the farm yesterday:
AAA BUF got mauled again. Easton Lucas struggled with command, but was fine. Babe on base 3 times with a 2B. JClase swiped his 12th bag
AA NH got a gem from Rafael Sanchez again: 6so innings with 5ks just 3bb+h. Fisher Cats erupted for 5 in the top of the six for the win (game called after that). Jay Harry promoted from A+ and had a 2-3 debut. Eddison Paulino 2-2 with a 2b and bb.
A+ VAN got beat up. Arjun Nimmala the bright spot: 2-5, HR 3rbi.
A DUN got the win. DM Fox’s tweet jinxed Trey who got just one more out, lifted with bases loaded and his relief walked two in. 10k’s of 13 outs though. Gage Stanifer was a ground ball machine with 4 clean innings for the win, and 8go. Manuel Beltre 1-3 with 2bb. Hasn’t stolen a base yet, but has 10bbs to 11ks. Great start for him.

They got Harry for Trevor Richards. He had a good 2023 season but stunk last year. Apparently his defense is fairly solid as an SS. If he continues to do well, he's worth keeping an eye on.

The Rockies are awful. They have 4 wins out of 25 games. That pace would put them at 26 wins for the year. Their farm system is average. They won a WC game in 2018 and hadn't won a playoff game since 2009. Haven't won a playoff series since 2007.

The positive so far is Springer.

For everyone else, there needs to be some tweaking to the approach. The Jays are near the bottom in Pull % and near the top in Oppo % which makes generating offense difficult (all the other teams like that are bottom half in homers, but can score other ways like hitting doubles).
None of that addresses my question

A rare sweep for the farm. Someone in TO had to do it.
AAA BUFF decent start for Trenton Wallace, better relief from Andrew Bash. Joey Loperfido had three hits, OMart had two.
AA NH got another great start from Ryan Watson, 6 2hit shutout innings with 6ks. Pen held on. Yohendrick Pinango accounted for all the games runs with a 2-out rbi double in the 8th.
A+ VAN went to town. Fernando Perez had a solid start 4ip 1er 4k’s, and the bullpen was tight. Offence exploded for 10 runs on 4home runs: three run shots for Arjun Nimmala and Sean Keys, two run shots by Sean Keys and Carter Cunningham.
A DUN got a great start from Cody Holcombe again: 5 shutout innings, 5bb+h and 6ks. 2b Sam Shaw had another day at the dish, 2-3 with a bb and hr.

Orelvis is starting to get going. Last week his wRC is 122. Power is up, and k rate down.

Three wins in four on the farm.
AAA BUF spun a shutout. Back to back nice starts for Jake Bloss 4.1ip, 5ks. Daulton Varsho 1-4 with the games line ribbie. 2b and bb for OMart, two sb’s for Steward Berroa.
AA NH took the only loss 2-1. Bullpen day, and they were all fine. Offence just really scuffling. Jay Harry on base twice, stole second twice.
A+ VAN mounted a four run comeback in the 9th, only to give up two in the bottom half before winning in 10. Rough start for Grant Rogers. Offence led by Arjun Nimmala’s 2-5 and hr game and Cutter Coffey’s 2-5 with two 2b’s.
A DUN overcame a rough start from Khal Stephen . Offensive standout again was Yunei Munoz - 2-5 with a hr and a 2b. He has matched his career home run output with his fifth in 62abs. Had five in his first 374 pro at bats.

There isn't a good answer.

On the one hand, this is the most stable the franchise as a whole has been since Gillick. On the other hand, this might be the worst run of coaching staffs we've had.

The pieces on the team should be a playoff contender (sliding scale from Wild Card to Division), but the hitting has been off since Mattingly got here (and has been awful this year). The pitching has also been wonky at times.

The thing that makes me the most fearful is that if they got rid of Schneider, they would likely promote Mattingly.

Just a quick note: Mattingly might be the most overrated hitter in MLB history. Compared to his peers, he was actually worse of a hitter than Spencer Horwitz.

Defense update:

C - Kirk is up to 2nd overall in Def (behind Moreno). (0 DRS)

1B - Vlad is now 6th overall among qualified 1B in Def (has actually improved over the last couple of weeks). He's tied for 1st in AL DRS (though Mountcastle is 1st in Def and T-1 in DRS).

2B - Gimenez is now up to 6th overall among qualified 2B and leads DRS

SS - Bo is bottom half among SS

3B - Clement is T-2 overall (1st in AL) and T-1 in DRS overall.

LF - no qualifying LF (Roden is closest and leads Def, but his DRS is down to 1)

CF - no qualifying CF (Straw has been very good in CF, but not at the necessary level of innings)

RF - no qualifying RF (Springer and Santander have struggled defensively, whereas Lukes and Barger have been positives).

They've had the same issues now 3 years in a row. Its time to fire the manager. But this ownership group are completely clunkheads.

Do Tony Staffieri or Ed Rogers know anything about baseball? How come a team with a top 5 payroll in baseball has this many holes on their roster still? Shapiro should have been gone 2 years ago.
