Blue Jays Discussion: Vladdy has signed 14 yr/500mil

First place with 0 HR’s is wild. Our rotation has done a phenomenal job.
Other than Jose Berrios' absolute clunker of an opening day start vs the Orioles, the Jays starting pitchers have a collective ERA of 2.20, and a WHIP of 0.96.

That's with Max Scherzer, Alek Manoah, and Ricky Tiedemann all out, the latter 2 until late in the season.

And this is why i said i wasn't worried about the pitching in the offseason.

Gausman looks like himself when he came into this season healthy, Bassitt was only truly bad last year in a couple of starts and Berrios is Berrios.

Now i won't pretend i saw Lucas coming, but everybody else is about where i expected them to be.

It blows my mind that Vladdy is here until 2039... It's so far in the future it feels like made up futuristic date.
I made a buddy feel old (and a bit freaked out) when i pointed out we'll be 46 when the deal is over and his kid will likely just be going into his first year of post secondary school.

Per his wife, after that he stared at a wall for about 30 seconds and went "...shit"

It is such an awesome feeling when you look back and get to say you watched that guy's entire career from his first AB up until his retirement press conference. Got to do it a couple times as a Bruins fan so trust me on this.

WTF, 4 premium seats an 1 suite.... You just got signed to $500M deal. Buy your own! What's with these players demands beyond the contract? Apparently Soto wasn't happy the Yanks wouldn't give him a suite.

Counterpoint: who cares? The suite would be going to some bigwig anyways. Vladdy sticking around will likely make the team the money back on the suite they gave him and then some.

Yeah it's going to be cool to watch Vladdy from day one of his career to the last one. Here's hoping he helps win some hardware along the way.

I'm in the same boat on the age side, I'm just going to choose to not think about it...

The craziest thing about Vladdy is that he's close to halfway to a HoF career already (and has roughly the same career impact as a Matt Olson, who is 5 years older):

Minors yesterday:
Jake Bloss had another pedestrian start in a Bisons loss in first game of a double dip.
Good bullpen game in the night cap. Keep an eye on Braydon Fisher outta the pen.
Jonaton Clase keeps hitting and running.
AA NH got a nice start from Devereaux Harrison, who might be flying under radars some: 5ip, 4bb+h, 1er and 8k’s. Peyton Williams with his first dinger of the year to pace the offence.
Come from behind win for A+ VAN. Nimmala, Pinto and Keys paced the offence with two hits and a 2B each. Fernando Perez gave up 3 unearned runs (none earned) over 4ip.
A DUN got a win. Tucker Toman rocking an OPS of 1.013z

Bloss has been massively disappointing since being the centerpiece of the Kikuchi trade, as has Loperfido.

Thankfully the 3rd guy in the deal in Wagner is managing to salvage a result there.

Yeah, he hasn’t been great. Hard to remember that HOU promoted him very aggressively to fill a ML hole last year, and he’s just early into his 2nd full minor league season.

He was unhittable in A+ and AA to get those promotions, wasn't like they were cheap ones.

But his ERA in 10 starts at AAA since the trade is almost 7.00, he's getting hit really hard, walks are way up. There's still some runway but things couldn't have gone much worse.

Loperfido on the other hand is about to turn 26 and doesn't really have any runway left, and it looks like he's behind multiple other AAA OF at this point.

Yeah. But it was still just 83 pro innings over two years, barely 5ip per start.
I’m confident he’ll come around.
I’m not out on Loperfido yet, either. Again, lotsa movement last year. Totally agree there’s a jam for playing time with him, but he’s got a better track record than Barger for power and speed, lotsa tools to work with. I’d rather have the options than not.
And Wagner is a nice little player, I like him a lot.

Which of those American players "wanted out"? The guys who left as free agents all spent 10+ years in Toronto, signed multiple contracts with the team, and (with the exception of Key) showed serious signs of decline before they left.

Halladay wanted out because he wanted to win and the Jays needed to rebuild, not because he didn't want to play in Canada.

Hell, Wells signed on to spend the rest of his career here and only got traded because the team had a chance to move a terrible contract.
Well was fun like John Daly was for golf.
