Blue Jays Discussion: Vladdy has signed 14 yr/500mil

Here's why the Vladdy signing is important. A lot of us were saying it was difficult for the Jays to sign guys in the offseason because Vladdy and Bo weren't signed. They have one of them signed now.

It’s a big signing especially when you look at who the Red Sox have at first base. I don’t know if Vlad has what it takes to play in Boston or would want to play in the shadow of Big Papi, but it was available for him.

I'll just add that another reason why the Vladdy signing is important is because many people thought it wasn't going to happen! Most people thought he was going to test free agency and we were going to lose him for nothing. same thing with Bo. I still get the feeling that Bo won't be back next year, but now i have a bit of hope that he might still sign here.

The Vladdy money isn't really the main sticking point. It's the fact that a player capable of playing MVP type seasons is committing to the Jays and the Jays are committing to said player. They needed to lock him up (money be damned) and they did.

As a casual observer - the Jays don't have the same allure or pull as traditional baseball markets like Boston or New York. It always feels like a struggle gettin talent up here, and staying here.

So to lock such a big name up to a long-term deal, albeit a huge one, feels like one of the only ways they can secure the talent they do have. From that perspective, it makes perfect sense.

You really hope they can build around him though; whatever you say about ownership, it at least feels like they are wanting to open up the chequebook and spend aggressively - if you can pair Vladdy, and the knowledge that he's here for nearly a decade and a half now, with some other big incomings?

This could get really interesting and exciting.

Yeah, there's reason to believe that both the Red Sox and Yankees were operating as if they planned on making a serious run at Vlad. Boston stuck with Casas and the Yankees addressed a huge hole with a one-year buy-low on a 37-year-old coming off a terrible season. Even the Mets were hesitant to go more than a couple years with Alonso.

I think some of the big spenders fully expected to get a shot at him in free agency, and it makes me happy to see the Jays disappoint them like this.

We're getting close to the point where we consider Springer leading off again
Leave him where he is now,he looks very content there.
But knowing Schneider, that’s probably what he’s thinking.
And he’s the last person you want to start thinking.

FWIW, the only players with a sub 330 OBP on the roster right now are Clement, Lukes, Schneider and Kirk

All of those players should not be on an mlb team. Maybe one could argue for kirk but he is abysmal with the bat, slowest player in the league and extremely out of shape.

They are 6-5 with none of the big 3 hitting for lots of power yet? I will take it.
With 4 of those games being in weather that is not conductive to power hitting no less.

You could see it screwing with the Sox too. Devers probably should have had a home run just like Bo but the ball he hit got absolutely smacked down by the heavier cold air.

Today is game 11 for NYY. Their starters only have 6 5 inning starts.

The Jays have only Scherzer's start.

Um there's no need to even argue for Clement or Kirk being major leaguers, but okay Shaner.

I was gonna criticize Yesavage for walking the bases loaded in the 1st(which then led to 2 unearned runs). But when the other team has walked 15 in 4 innings perhaps the conditions are poor for the pitchers. Yesavage has been good after the 1st.
I saw a few pitches on the gameday tracker, and it seems the ump has a pretty strict strike zone.
