Blue Jays Discussion: Vladdy has signed 14 yr/500mil

Unfortunately it comes down to his position and his ranking in correspondence to what they are making:

  • 1. New York Mets SS Francisco Lindor: $34.1 million
  • 2. Minnesota Twins SS Carlos Correa: $33.3 million
  • 3. Texas Rangers SS Corey Seager: $32.5 million
  • 4.Los Angeles Dodgers SS Mookie Betts: $30.4 million
  • 5. Philadelphia Phillies SS Trea Turner: $27.2 million
  • 6.Kansas City Royals SS Bobby Witt Jr.: $26.2 million
  • 7.San Francisco Giants SS Willy Adames: $26 million
  • 8. Chicago Cubs SS Dansby Swanson: $26 million
  • 9. Detroit Tigers SS Javier Baez: $23.3 million
  • 9. Boston Red Sox SS Trevor Story: $23.3 million

I can see him slot into the 9 Slot on this list on his own. He is definitely better then Swanson, Baez and Story. All the others are paid higher cause they are better. So a 7yr/170m deal makes him 24.3 million.

He can ask all he wants but that is his market.

Betts wasn't signed as a SS. Witt Jr was FA eligible.

Bo is definitely better than the 9 guys, but he's arguably better than anyone on that list not named Witt or Lindor.

I can say this watching as a Bruins fan right now; watching a shitty team with no hopes for the not too distant future sucks. I wouldn't say i'm rooting for them to tank (i'm pretty anti-tank) but at the same time i acknowledge losing is probably the only way for them to turn the ship around given how the talent they need never goes to market.

I would much rather the Jays give Vladdy the bag and take a run at trying to compete and fail then to blow it up, get a new generation only for those guys to probably walk too. I already sat through that from 2017-2020 and then again in the early 10s even with Bautista and Encarnaion.

You never know until you try. And trying isn't something this team has done outside of the early 90s and mid 10s.

It's one thing if you're, like, the Nashville Predators and your core has basically aged out and you have absolutely no hope of even making the playoffs going forward. Obviously at that point the best option is a rebuild.

But it's reached the point where fans have this insane attitude that if you aren't a top-3/5 elite contender for a championship, you should be tanking and losing on purpose for 5 years. Being a middling/solid team is bad. It's insane. And it's playing video games and totally out of touch with the actual reality of pro sports which is that no team would ever rebuild from that situation. I find it so weird and juvenile. If you aren't going to be elite, just quit and suck for years and try to get a superstar by winning a lottery. Like, what happened to actually enjoying the process of being a fan and organically going through the ups and downs with your team?

This is an outstanding day/news. What this signing tells me is the budget isn’t going anywhere. If you toss out 500 million for Vladdy there’s no point in stopping now. You gotta stay competitive and I would expect a top 5-6 payroll going forward. The next decade+ is going to be fun

His consensus rating is 13th in MLB and 3rd amongst first baseman but now he’s the second highest paid player in MLB history. It’s a lot of money to pay a guy with no post season success (BA of .136 and OPS of .422). Where have I heard that before ? Another example of having to overpay players to play in Canada. Now he has to deliver when it counts.

The contract looks like an overpay, but if Soto's deal really reset the top end of the market, then it won't be long before Vlad is just another guy on a $500+ million deal.

Gunnar Henderson is about to be licking his chops lmao.

Baltimore's new ownership is obviously ready to spend but i don't think even Rubenstein has the money to keep their entire core together just by virtue of how many guys they have.

My wife got me a Vlad jersey as a birthday present about 3 or 4 years ago... Trying to explain to my wife (who has never played or watched sports prior to meeting me) why I would need to get rid of it if he left was an experience I wish on no other man.

Regardless of how you view the 500 million dollar news, it can only be a boost to the team morale. The star is here to stay, the cheque book is open. Hopefully this gives Vlad and the team a spark.

Once Anthony gets called up, do the red sox have the best bats 1-9 in baseball?
Depends on if Anthony becomes an instant impact player ala Campbell. Right now i'd still give the Dodgers the nod.

Legitimate all-star core between Freeman, Ohtani and Mookie. Solid contributors with guys like Smith, Edman (who is still riding a heater post trade) and Teoscar. Bottom of the lineup is serviceable enough with the only real weak spot being Shortstop.

Your 7-9 can be a bit weaker if your 1-6 is that good.

Funny enough, when it looked like we wouldn’t extend Bo. I was hoping they would trade him to the dodgers and get JDP back

Only a minor overpay of about 150million. Yikes, I think I would have rather moved him than lock this contract in. Wow, shatkins cost Rogers at least an extra 100m with how they squandered this extension.
