Blue Jays Discussion: Vladdy has signed 14 yr/500mil

It wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t such a long contract. Signing someone for the same money well into 40 years of age is insane. How do these players justify the cost being the same at 27 and at 40.
It would be the same justification for all the players who have signed these deals over the years: you expect to get surplus value out of the player in the early years that offsets some of the negative value from later on.

Contracts 101 right here.

Pay for the prime years, ask questions about the back end later. Tale as old as time itself and we see it every year, in every sport.

Vladdy and Bo being here for the long term will attract free agents. Springer, Gausman, all signed because this was seen as a great young core. You don't have to sign the Ohtanis or Sotos of the world. FA will want to play with Vladdy and Bo, plus this is a great awesome city and the franchise is top notch.

Yup, exactly! Keep drafting well and sign the other vets to fill in the gaps where needed.

Soccer…
Check Ronaldo 200 million eu/ros that’s 310 million Canadian dollars, PER YEAR1
Yeah soccer is just another level.

Global sport that cant be matched for viewership and fandom

South america, most of Europe, a lot of Africa and fair bit of Asia + Australia/NZ are all consuming soccer at a very high level.

I didnt think baseball players would ve making this much as I had thought baseball was losing popularity in North America over past 10 years.

No hard cap probably helps players get these types of deals

Bo might argue he is worth same aav as Vladdy. That's around 35.7M. Not gonna try to squeeze him just because he said he wants to be with Vladdy. I am not saying he should get 500 over 14 years. But maybe try to negotiate 32 x 11? 352M. Or do you go shorter with him? Let's see what his numbers look like by the All-Star break.

Bo should get something like 7 years 170 million. A touch better then Adames (24 million/yr).

Rogers should lock him up immediately. Like some have mentioned already. These 2 deals along with Kirk, Gimenez locked up will bring other free agents here. This is why, a big part why Soto didnt come here. There was no future. With all these guys locked up, Berrios wont opt out and you may be able to resign players like Gausman and Bassitt on short term win now deals as their final contracts. Why leave what is working.

External free agents once again will come here.

Bo needs to be signed immediately.

Probably the minority opinion, but now is when I would be looking to move Bo, we got an in house replacement who's a much better fit at short in Gimenez and the value you could get back far exceeds the comp pick value you are going to get. I don't think Bo is a fit here long term for what he's going to command in FA.

But the pending free agents in the rotation make a lot of money. So there will be money to sign one or two FA SP.

I am cautiously optimistic on Manoah because he showed good signs after his terrible year (before he lost the ability to throw his slider completely as his elbow went). He had one terrible year then came back looking good (again, his ST arsenal looked amazing, but a couple of starts into his season, it became apparent that things weren't good from a health POV).
Wow memories of 2022

No reason why you cannot flip flop Bichette to 2nd and Gimenez to SS when the time comes. Ultimately, you keep Bo and add a 3B this infield regardless of where Bo plays is the best in baseball.

I have always been a believer that you build a great baseball team down the middle of your diamond. Lock up Bo and Varsho, you have a dam good middle of the baseball diamond with Kirk, Gimenez, Bo and Varsho.

I don't know why people think Vladdy would have agreed to a $200 million contract. He is Vladdy Sr's son, so it's not like he's grown up without money, and he had an insane minor league career. He was always going to bet on himself to improve to earn a mega-contract (like he did).

He would argue he is not worth 11M less on the aav than Vladdy
Unfortunately it comes down to his position and his ranking in correspondence to what they are making:

  • 1. New York Mets SS Francisco Lindor: $34.1 million
  • 2. Minnesota Twins SS Carlos Correa: $33.3 million
  • 3. Texas Rangers SS Corey Seager: $32.5 million
  • 4.Los Angeles Dodgers SS Mookie Betts: $30.4 million
  • 5. Philadelphia Phillies SS Trea Turner: $27.2 million
  • 6.Kansas City Royals SS Bobby Witt Jr.: $26.2 million
  • 7.San Francisco Giants SS Willy Adames: $26 million
  • 8. Chicago Cubs SS Dansby Swanson: $26 million
  • 9. Detroit Tigers SS Javier Baez: $23.3 million
  • 9. Boston Red Sox SS Trevor Story: $23.3 million

I can see him slot into the 9 Slot on this list on his own. He is definitely better then Swanson, Baez and Story. All the others are paid higher cause they are better. So a 7yr/170m deal makes him 24.3 million.

He can ask all he wants but that is his market.

This is a gamble without a doubt. But I’m happy to take this gamble than just lose him in free agency, and have a big impact elsewhere (especially a rival). It’s nice to see a homegrown player sign for the long haul.

Interested to see what happens with Bo now
