Blue Jays Discussion: Vladdy has signed 14 yr/500mil

He’s nowhere near worth the contract. I don’t know what he’s done to even be in discussion for this type of number.

Might not be, but when stars are refusing to sign you have to overpay. The only good thing is that with Vladdy’s commitment, maybe, just maybe other stars will view Toronto as a desirable place because he’s choosing to stay. That’s what you’re hoping for.

On one hand I am happy he is signed, but its just such a crazy amount of money for someone swinging a stick. I know that market is whatever it is, and in 3-4 years it will not even going to look that outrageous, but still.

Did Flop lower his price after seeing major league pitching for 10 days? Still a big overpay but it not as bad as it could have been.

that number is uncomfortable to look at. Hopefully Dan and Buck don't bring it up every game. And mods don't put it in the new thread title.

Too early defensive update:
C - Kirk is 29th in Def and has 0 DRS (Raleigh is around the same mark and they were easily 1-2 last year, though Wells in NY is doing well and is a candidate for the GG as well)

1B - Vlad is tied for 1st in 1B DRS (Kike Hernandez and Mountcastle). His Def stat is low, but actually improving.

2B - Gimenez is tied for top 2B DRS in the AL (with Chisholm) but his Def is still negative (but climbing)

SS - Bo has a negative 1 DRS, but is actually doing well on Def (13th). If he keeps this up, he will end up with a very good defensive season.

3B - Clement is 1st in baseball in Def by a 3B and 4th overall (by quite a large margin) and tied for 1st in DRS.

LF - Roden has been very good in LF (0.2 Def puts him 7th but a bunch of guys above him are all glove CF types). Wyatt Langford in Texas has been the best actual LF so far.

CF - Surprisingly, everyone has been fairly good in CF. No one is Varsho, but no one expected that.

RF - Umm...Springer is the 2nd worst defensive RF in baseball statistically (he takes bad routes because he is a CF playing RF). Santander is similar (more of a LF playing RF).

Toronto can manage with RF not being great, but adding Varsho in CF will dramatically improve RF. On top of that, one of the cases for Straw staying around is that he arguably should be a defensive replacement over anyone in right.

Well, I'm happy he's not gonna play for the Red Sox or the Yankees and possibly torment us for another decade+, but I think this contract will age very badly, but who knows what the payrolls will be in 10+ years.

Anyway, I'm glad they did it because maybe it just frees him up to start raking, and that this franchise doesn't look like a joke not being able to sign anybody, and this might hopefully attract others to get overpaid lol.

This probably almost guarantees that Bichette goes to free agency and signs elsewhere, i don't imagine they will sign him to 200-300M deal that he probably wants.

It has to be said, this deal does not make the team better! it just doesn't make them worse.

I'm glad they got this done, a bit of an overpayment but it needed to be done for the morale of the franchise. Does it move the needle in the short term? Probably not. Vladdy will start hitting as the weather warms up and his first half dozen years will be good. What this team needs now is to get Bo signed, and get rid of this management team. Atkins, Shapiro, and Schneider should all be shot to the moon. Sound contradictory since they just signed a lifelong Blue Jay? Not really, because Vladdy should have been signed last season at probably $350 million with the same term if these guys had any sense.

Yeah, most of my thoughts are echos.
Glad it’s done.
Glad there’s a chance to have a lifetime Jay.
Glad there’s stability in the middle of the lineup.
Scarcity of replacements was a thing (prime aged free agents).
The money and term sounds ridiculous.
Now media pivots from ‘why not?’ to ‘why?’ when he goes through predictable lulls in power.
And 14 years of discussing whether his body will hold up.
Now go get hitting please.

"Thats gonna be $500 millones, no defer, plus tip...no exchanges or returns amigo"

They could have extended him to a Tatis-like deal but they chose to sit and wait. Now they're paying almost double lol, what a disaster of a front office.

Great update

Horrifically bad contract, that was clearly offered due to ownership intervention. Negotiations were incredibly poorly done on the blue jays side.

Buyout talks will start when he's 33/34 unless he somehow ages like David Ortiz (He won't)

I will say this, basically forces the team to be in winning mode at all times for the decade. So they'll have to be good or try to be good.

Guys, the jays have offered someone 600-700m 2 straight offseason and just handed out the biggest contract ever for a 1B.

I don't think the Jays ownership/FO is concerned about cap restrictions. Even if he stinks at the tail end, they will probably be in the 200-250m cap range unless baseball says there will be a cap.

I assume Varsho and maybe Bo (if he wants to stay?) will be done soon.

As a fan.

Vlad as a Blue Jay > Vlad anywhere else.

Rogers is paying the $500 million. I will contribute by going to a game or 2 a season and paying for $20 beers. Seats, drinks, jerseys, hot dogs wont be much cheaper if he was let go. Could care less if he stinks by age whatever. Losing him would always be a more devastating outcome for the franchise.

Orioles probably losing their mind knowing Henderson ask starts at 500m now (probably should start at 550m because hes better than Vladdy)

Unsure how or why this would be deemed a bad thing...
