Blue Jays Discussion: Vladdy has signed 14 yr/500mil

The contract extension we were all waiting for. :sarcasm:

If he can get back to being an above average hitter that contract is a gem. Already looks decent since he's legitimately an elite defensive catcher.

That being said, this will not prevent me from chuckling when he runs because the man is built, and moves like a refrigerator.

Edit: Actually no, change it from decent deal to great given they bought out his Arbitration years with this.

How many years of arb did Kirk have left. Does the deal include this year's contract or is it 5 more after this one?

Seems pretty reasonable upon first glance. Buying low almost since he's been rather average the last 2 years but has a good floor with his D and hopefully can get back to a high value hitter with the new hitting coaches.

This year is already signed and baseball doesng rip up deals (years are only canceled with options/opt-outs). This is 1 of arb plus 4 of fa

You put the emoji, but Kirk was actually the hardest guy to replace. While he's not likely to be the best player on the team, if he left, the Jays could potentially be stuck with a Heineman level starter with catching depth thinning out across baseball.

Whats the obsession with Straw?
Buck made the argument that opening the season with Straw in CF would allow the Jays to play everyone in position for when Varsho returns (similar defense).

With that scenario, another OF still makes it while Varsho is out and they make a call on what to do when he's back.

Straw has 2 options, so keeping him only costs a 40 man spot if they decide he isnt the guy after Varsho comes back, but if he can improve his hitting, he's easily the most valuable 4th outfielder option (late game defensive sub plus pinch runner for Kirk as a base value).

They have 7-10 days where they can play him, let the other two outfielder have defensive support, and analyze whether he is going to Zimmer or if he could be a passable hitter.

I did the hitters, so here goes on the pitchers....

Berrios, Gausman, Bassitt, Francis and Rodriguez are expected to start in the rotation. If Scherzer feels good today, they will likely use a 6 man rotation early (not a lot of rest days)

Pen has Hoffman, Garcia, Green, Sandlin as the guys who should be locks.

Yarborough, Little and Lovelady are the lefty options with Nance as the main rights (depending on Pop's health). Tate was optioned but should be recalled early in the season once he's in form.

Not sure that there's a right or wrong answer there.

Yeah, even with the last two years of slightly below average hitting, he's average 2.5 fWAR in 400 PA per season. If that's just who he is now, $12 million per seems really good. If the bat bounces back, it's an absolute bargain.

Not that there isn't any downside or anything, but I think the upside vastly outweighs it.

Unless i am missing someone, the only Jays to play 7 full seasons or more acquired by a GM other than Gillick or Ash are Bautista, Lind, Cecil and Frasor.

You get 7 seasons of control fwiw.

Rodriguez just seems to profile better as a multi inning RP doesn't he?

Why are they playing at 2 and 3 central time on Saturdays this year? Did they do that last year?

I'd say one inning leverage, but from March 27-April 23, they have two off days (24 is 3). Using a 6 man rotation for that period is an extra day for the cold weather, where Rodriguez transitions to multi inning as they get closer to the 24th if things are going well.

I think Bloss gets the nod if Max can't pitch.
