If you are into pinball or arcade games there is a cozy little arcade inside the Forks promenade. You can grab beers from the promenade bar and take them inside.
The Forks also has a river taxi though it might be closed for the season.
If you're into music, go to Into the Music on McDermot in the Exchange District which is 15 min walk from the arena. Big selection of new/used records and cd's and one of the best music stores in Canada (seriously). There's also a Tokyo Smoke across the street if you want some divine inspiration while you shop.
The Exchange also has a cool used book store on Albert called Red River Books which has a very large selection and...eccentric atmosphere. Independent coffee and donuts at "Not a Bronut" on King St.
Definitely check out St Boniface if you are into history or want to see the French side of the city. Great restaurants in that part of town as well.
Sherbrook south of Portage is the "hipster" part of downtown. Independent coffee at Thom Bargen. Don't go to Pizza Bite.
Osborne is the counterculture part of downtown but it is past its glory days to say the least. Still some good shops especially if anyone needs anything for the woman in their life (or one happens to be travelling with you). Good Pho at Pho Hoang and sushi at Naru. Another good record store at Old Gold Vinyl. Indepenent coffee shop at Little Sister.
Corydon is the yuppie street, tons of bars and patios and very busy on the weekends.
Union Station on Main Street is a nice sight to check out and was designed by the same architecture firm which designed Grand Central in NY!
Assiniboine forest is the largest "urban" forest in Canada but is not close to the arena.

Former NHL goalie Joe Daley has a sports memorabilia shop here...and Teemu Selanne's favourite pizza is at DeeJay's restaurant in west St. James ;).

The actual Portage strip around the arena is a bit depressing as one poster alluded to, but there are a a few mainstream-type sports bars like Tavern United, and burger-and-beer places like The Tipsy Cow.
If you wanna gamble and stare at duck-lipped waitresses, Shark Club is your friend.
I''m pretty sure any bar in the city will turn on a non-Jets nhl game for you if you ask.

It's been years since I had DeeJay's. Growing up in the St. Charles/Crestview area I spent a good portion of my newspaper delivery money getting DeeJays to deliver every collection period.

Everybody has their own tastes and preferences, but if you're looking for an impartial list of great restaurants, how about:

- 529 Steakhouse - Fusion Grill - ClayOven

All three draw stars in the Michelin Canada guide. All three are unique to only Winnipeg.
Love the Clay Oven. The other two places are only for when your date's picking up the check.

Magic Thai is definitely fantastic. Was just trying to name one that is in an area with a bunch of other amenities.

Speaking of Magic Thai, I haven't been in a while to will have to go back there soon.
Me and my wife seem to be ordering a lot from there lately. I got my heat level down to a 3.

Grew up in Westwood. My wife and I loved their "gloppy ribs and gummy baked potatoes", to borrow from Marion Warhaft's less than praiseful review.

BTW, if anyone has ever learned the secret recipe for those potatoes, I would love to hear it.

For someone from New York, I'd recommend the Shark Club over the other two casinos in town. The location and the atmosphere and the client energy is definitely going to be more to your speed.

If you're up for a greasy spoon adventure, check out like any small burger stand (I can vouch for Dairi Wip, VJs, and Junior's) and get a "Fat Boy" -- it's our canonical burger, featuring what you know as 'Cincinnati chili' and it's just an awesome and sloppy mess.

+1 again for The Forks, that's an obvious answer.

Now you just reminded me that I need to get to New York and cross "have a Glenmorangie at McManus Cafe" off my bucket list. :) but I hope you enjoy your stay here, and please do update us with how you found your time here!

This place looks great! My favorite record shops in North America are Sonic Boom in Toronto and Amoeba in LA.

I'm going to start jotting down a lot of what people have suggested here over the next 24 hours. Now I feel obligated to update.

There's a band called KEN Mode they play like noise rock/sludge/metal from Winnipeg that I'm really into if any of you are familiar. I'll be seeing them in NY in about a month.
Just went to Sonic Boom this September! Definitely a good store but I prefer Into the Music honestly. No contest between Amoeba though. That place is huge!
One thing...the owner still has a mask policy in place there...pretty frustrating for some but the staff don't seem to enforce it if you don't want to put one on (some of them anyways). And they ask you bring your own headphones for the listening stations.

So thanks for the suggestions everyone. You have a very nice city. I enjoyed myself (even at the game, Jets fans were very friendly and the usher made me get a "My First Jets Game" sticker).

Favorite restaurants were The Peasant Cookery, Clementines, and Saint Lucia where the pizza was very good (never had gyro pizza in all my years in NY, even at Tony Baloney's in NJ which has some wild slices).

The Forks stores was the perfect place to get some souvenirs for family. I got to check out a few museums and Into The Music as well.

Got some nice outdoor time as well just walking around whether by Shaw Stadium, downtown, the bridge, Union Station, or the parks/trails by The Forks. I really value that because I have one of those occupations where getting away from emails is very hard 10.5/12 months of the year, and for various reasons this year it's been constant projects and system migrations.

Hopefully our teams see each other in the late spring.....then I'm going to have to come back as a sub for a baseball trip ;)

The last thing I’d ever suggest to a New Yorker who has daily access to arguably the best pizza on the planet is to try anything Winnipeg has to offer.
You clearly dont know anything about pizza. Wpg has probably the top 10 pizza restaurants in the world.

Ever go to Italy? They kinda are known for pizza. Well they get their flour from manitoba. Every legendary place does.

Manitoba also has the best water to make your pizza. Thats why crown royal stays in mb and yrs ago the tops breweries were in Winnipeg.

And you didn't get shanked? Maybe our resident ne'er-do-wells recognized a New Yawkah and decided not to mess with you.

Glad you had a good Winnipeg experience.
LOL I'm definitely not a loud person (unless I'm with my childhood friends talking 90s X-Men or old school wrestling).

Most of my walking was during the day so lots of people and especially groups of kids around. I found it to be very safe.

I don't know if any of you have been to DC before. I lived there for a few years and if you're familiar with where the concert venues are (legendary 9:30 Club or The Black Cat). those are places you don't want to be walking late at night in my days (pre-Uber and cell phones were just starting out).

Hello from Italy, Manitoba flour is definitely used by "Alice pizza", a normal (very good) chain of pizza by the slice. In no pizzeria or restaurant I have ever seen Manitoba flour used. Let's avoid saying nonsense, it would be enough to know, for example, the Neapolitan pizza to understand that Manitoba is not indicated as dough. It does not mean that it cannot be done, mind you, but the flour we use is different.

There's about a 0% chance of someone getting "shanked" in downtown Winnipeg.
Now...leaving the Royal Albert after a punk show in the pre-Uber/cell phone days...could be a different story!

glad you had a good time & enjoyed our little prairie metropolis

Please note that "Manitoba flour" is a classification of wheat flour with a particular "strength". Although this type of flour may have originated here, it is made from wheat grown all over the world.

That may be, but that's not what they use in Italy. They use type 0 or 00 (or a mix of both).

I mean - that's according to the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana at least. Italy's a big country, maybe somewhere someone is using Manitoba flour. But it would not be typical.

Actually, it's precisely where it is used. 0 and 00 are grind types or "tipos" - 00 being the finest grind - which can be ground from Manitoba (a high protein flour) or other flours depending on the intended use. Here's a pretty good explanation:

Every pizza expert in Italy uses manitoba flour.
CNN has a show on that even discussed this.

You can't get away with anything on here anymore.

So many flour experts on here. I'm guessing all of G3 (CWB) just lurk on here all day long.
