Hey Devils fans!

I will be in NYC for New Years and figured it'd be a great time to catch a Devils game since I have never been to one, so I am trying to catch one after NYE. I will be staying with my GF at Columbia University and am trying to find out the cheapest/quickest way to the arena.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Also, I am going to try to make an Islanders game too if anyone has advice for the quickest/cheapest way from Columbia for that too.

Thanks! Good luck this season.

Easiest? Take the 1 train from 116th st (Columbia) southbound to 14th street and take the PATH train from there to Newark Penn Station. You then have to transfer at Journal Square to the Newark bound train.

Might be a little faster if you transfer at 96th street to the 2 train and take that to 14th Street since it's an express train.

Very easy from Columbia, like the previous poster mentioned. The 1 subway train downtown to Christopher St, walk a few blocks to the Path station and take that all the way into Newark. From Newark Penn it is a very short walk, you can even use the skyway in Newark which drops you off infront of the arena, which is clutch when it is cold out.

You may have to transfer at Newport and Journal Square on the Path line but it is very quick and easy.

Oh awesome. I thought I'd have to catch a cab to get to NJ. As someone that has been to NYC once, I have zero clue what I'm doing and didn't even realize trains went to NJ.

The lifeblood of the Metropolitan area, NJ/NY transit. If I lived in the city or the surrounding burbs I would not even want to own a car.

To plan your trip check the NY subway and NY/NJ Path websites for schedules and times. Very simple.

How hard/expensive do you guys think tickets to the Chicago game would be on 1/3? It's either that or the Flyers on 1/7.

Despite the Devils improved attendance over the last few years, securing a ticket wont be hard. You may have to pay more on gameday, especially if it is a weekend game. I would check stubhub once season tickets are released to fans to get a good deal.

If she has a car, take the GW bridge to the NJ Turnpike South.

Or, public transportation as mentioned already above.

You think it'd be cheaper to get tickets through stubhub rather than buy them through the Devils?

On the way back, you could take the PATH all the way to WTC instead of transferring (I think it's a faster trip) and take the 2 train from there up to 96th street and transfer to the 1 across the platform.

in all likelihood, this should be the case. some seating locations may not quite hold true, but that's just due to the potential supply. if you're flexible on where you sit (as there really isn't a bad seat in the building), then definitely go stubhub and don't rush into buying tickets. You'll be fine if it gets to be a week or two before the game and you still haven't yet bought your tickets. Just keep an eye on it because team performance may impact the prices slightly.

That said, I also just remembered that in 2011 - 2012 the Devils sold out 7/8 home games held during the college winter break. The one they didn't sellout, iirc, out was a mid-week Sabres game that still got 16,500+.. So factoring in that it's the Blackhawks and a Friday night game, demand could be extremely high closer to game time if the team is doing well.. I'd say the best time to buy for this one could be late September through October as people make their holiday plans and try to get rid of tickets early

I'd recommend taking the 1 train southbound to 34th st. Penn Station. Walk to the NJ Transit trains and take one of the trains directly to Newark Penn Station. Pretty sure that is the fastest and easiest way to do it.

You know...I feel like someone who's never lived in or around nyc and been to the city many times...would have absolutely no idea what you just said lol

Its not a terrible idea, but its not like there will be nothing available on stubhub. That's my point. There will definitely be a supply up there up until the week of the game. Its just too hard to predict now what the pricing will be. That's the kind of thing that will vary. But I definitely wouldn't buy it before/as the season is starting. No one is going to be putting their tickets up for sale for less than face at that point in time unless they're REALLY that desperate to sell months in advance. There's no guarantee of which direction prices could go this far out, but there's no need to rush into a purchase at least.

Correct answer. Do this.

Previously answers that included the PATH = incorrect.

To add on to what others have said..

Once you get to Newark Penn Station (Newark PENN station.. not New York Penn station or Newark BROAD street station).. go up to the station and follow the Devils jerseys.

There's a nice overpass that connects the station to a building a block away from the arena so no need to navigate the streets of Newark.

Weekend game against an out of conference opponent.. I'd prob buy the tickets after the season starts but well before your trip.. mostly to ensure you have tickets to the game since you'll only be here for a limited time and it would suck to be shut out.

Still, it is comparing apples to apples, both will get you there in basically the same time. NJTransit will most likely cost a bit more.

On second thought you are right, for an out of towner the best way to go would be NYPenn to Newark Penn via NJT, if planned correctly. I am so set in my PATH ways from my years in Jersey City.

if you want to take PATH which is cheaper, you can take the 2 or 3 straight downtown to Park Place, follow the signs for the PATH exit(right at the WTC site) and take the Newark-bound train for a one seat ride. No need to get off 6th Ave only to switch trains along the way.
