Any advice for what to do in Ann Arbor? My friends and I are going on a quick trip Wednesday-Friday and it'd be cool to get a good idea of some fun stuff, besides get really drunk.

Would someone be able to mark off where these neighbourhoods to avoid are on a map of downtown Detroit? I'm coming into town for a few days to catch the last games of the regular season and would like to do a little sightseeing as well but don't want to be walking through bad parts of town.

I'm staying at Greektown. Thanks!

You'll be fine downtown. Anything worth seeing will be safe as there's others visiting these sites as well.

Treat Detroit like you would any city. Mind your manners and observe your surroundings.

Hey Guys,

I'm driving down from Toronto to Detroit for Game 4 next Thursday and was wondering where the best/cheapest places to park are. Would be nice to be close to the Joe as it'll be my first time in the city so I don't know my way around.

Thanks!

Park on Jefferson. If you're using a GPS look up the US post office on fort street. On the other side of that building you can park allllllllllll along the river. It's free and safe. As an added bonus, its a nice place to slam some brews before the game. It's about a five minute walk. Straight shot to the Joe, literally all you do is walk straight.

Park in Windsor and take the tunnel bus. Any place close to the bus terminal is reasonably cheap.

I also will be coming to Detroit for game 4. Traveling with the gf from NY to Pittsburgh for game 4 on Wednesday, then heading to Detroit for game 4 on Thursday before visiting Canada over the weekend. I assume there is parking at the arena? Don't mind paying for the parking lot/garage.

Also, any recommendations for a cheap, safe, clean place to stay? Anything within 20-30 minutes of the Joe would be fine. Just need a place to shower and sleep for 1 night.

The Joe does have a parking structure and is around 10-15 bucks.

Hilton Garden Inn if you are looking for a place to sleep. It's cheap and right in the heart of downtown Detroit. Nothing fancy, but it's convenient. I have stayed there several times and never had a bad experience.

Looking for something around $100 for the night. Doesn't have to be downtown Detroit, preferably I'd like it it to be a little bit away

The town will be overrun with Jimmy Buffett fans that night so expect plenty of intoxicated middle age people.

Go for a drink at Coach Insignia; it's at the top of The Rennaissance Center (big GM building). The elevator ride alone is worth it. The riverfront is nice by the Ren Center, too.Haven't been there, but a lot of people like Punch Bowl Social...games and food. If you like beer the Hop Cat is a must. 130 taps! Thrillist Detroit and Detroit Metro Times are good references.

Going to a concert in Detroit on Friday (Vince Staples at the Shelter, Saint Andrews Hall), my friends and I will have some time to kill so are there any cool things nearby we should check out? Some of them are under 21 so bars aren't really an option- also any recommendations on cheap hotels with a low-likelihood of getting murdered?

So apparently there's a decent group of us Preds fans coming up for the weekend in December for the game. My friends and I aren't officially going with them so we will have free time. We will land Friday around noon and leave Sunday afternoon. Trying to find things to do Friday afternoon/evening & Saturday before the game. I think we'll probably spend Friday night in Windsor most likely, but what are some fun things to do Saturday afternoon before the game and in the downtown area? It sounds like the outdoor ice skating would be fun. Any other ideas, places to eat/drink?

My go to places to eat are Slows (BBQ), the original Buddy's on IIRC 6 Mile, and Mi Pueblo (Mexican), but I only get back to Detroit once a year if I'm lucky, which usually fills my craving for BBQ, although I could eat Mexican every day, but everyone will probably have differing opinions about their fav Mexican place in Mexicantown. They have a killer selection of beers on draft at Slows FWIW.

The Metro Times has a pretty good list of things to see and do in the area too:
http://www.metrotimes.com/detroit/BestOf

If you have a couple hours to spend, I would say at least go to the DIA, if you like museums. And probably go to American or Lafayette Coney. Have a Faygo and a bag of Better Made chips at least once too.

Honestly, I don't what's over in Windsor, besides strip clubs and the casino.

So they just announced dates for the Maiden U.S. tour. They clearly hate Minneapolis. So the next two options are The Palace Of Auburn Hills or United Center. Even if the rumors are exaggerated about Detroit, I'd still rather be murdered in Detroit than be welcomed to Chicago by Hawks fans. Kidding...sorta.

Anyway, my buddy and I are both Wild fans first, Wings fans if the Wild aren't playing. We both adopted Detroit as our fav team since the North Stars left in '93. So we looked and turns out Philly is in town to play the night after the Iron Maiden show. We're looking into making a road trip and plan for both events.

So I guess my main question is, should we find a hotel near the concert venue and drive down to the Joe for the game the next night? Or better to be near the arena and just drive up for the concert? Are there better / cleaner hotels (any to avoid?) and good places to hang, eat, drink, etc nearer one of those places? Find a place in the middle?

Guessing we'll probably drive in the day of the concert (April 5th), drive out the morning after the Wings game (Thursday April 7th) depending on hotel availability and pricing.

Thanks in advance for any info and advice!

Auburn Hills blows. It's boring and in the middle of nowhere. Get a hotel in Detroit. I have stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn several times and never had a bad experience. It's about a ten minute walk to the Joe. Although i would only walk if the weather is nice. Otherwise you are two minutes away from several bars that have shuttle service to the Joe and back on game night. Fishbones and Old Shillelagh are two bars that provide shuttle service, and they are right across the street from each other. They are free, but most people tip the driver a couple bucks.

what time is the game? If its in the afternoon i would advise for you to go to the Grand Rapids/Kalamzoo and surrounding areas instead. Much much better food and hotels.

What in the??? You'd have them stay out in the boonies for a game and concert in metro Detroit?? Those two cities are on the other side of the state, fer cryin' out loud!

Farmington Hills/Novi also have a lot of hotel options, or just anywhere in that corridor. If they wanted the college town experience, Ann Arbor is okay too, though it's a bit of a haul to the Palace.

Not familiar with the hotel, but I used to park on the rooftop of Cobo Hall. Easy to get in and out.

For free? Lookin for some free parking areas too.

Park on Jefferson (the street the Joe is on).

It's free, safe, and less than a 10 minute walk to the arena.

If you google the us post office in Detroit, parking is on the other side of that building.
