I'm not sure if someone posted this and I just missed it, but I guess it also belongs here anyway:
Colour me impressed he didn’t demote a rookie while playing well like he usually likes to do. For some “lessons” he thinks they need. He has a history of doing that shit.7 points in 8 games color me impressed
I can only imagine how close ol Gurgsy came to cutting himself every time he got a point. That 7pts in 8gp is gonna be a haunting echo the entire summer for him.
Good start in the NHL. Hopefully he can keep it up.
Still don’t see the long term role in him here. If Sullivan plays him top six and top PP, I’m sure he’ll produce.
I remember when Michael Bunting was incredible too.
As someone who shit on the Guentzel trade, its fantastic to see Koivunen thrive early with the Pens. Virtually no adjustment period, which is just what we needed.I can only imagine how close ol Gurgsy came to cutting himself every time he got a point. One thing I think we need to examine even though I hate per 60. @AuroraBorealis surprised you haven't brought this up.
Koivunen in 8 games while averaging 14:46 at 5v5 (which is more than Bryan Rust did this season) produced at a 1.01 pt pace per 60. That's lower than DOC, Dewar, Hayes, Lizotte and Eller at 5v5 this season.
For reference last season Puustinen produced at a 2.03 pt pace per 60.

Given that's a sub-200 minute sample where the team's shooting percentage was at 2.74% when he was on ice, there's a pretty good chance that's just noise.
If the team scores the expected 6 goals (rounded down from 6.45) rather than the actual 2 they did have from that, then Koivunen probably has 4 points from that which doubles his p/60. Sure it'd be interesting to dig at the video and see why expected isn't becoming actuality there, but when the team is creating chances with him on ice and the dude has a history of production, I feel pretty relaxed about that being a problem that'll work itself out.
Yeah we're in the same boat re: per 60...I'm not really concerned about that. One thing I think we need to examine even though I hate per 60. @AuroraBorealis surprised you haven't brought this up.

I don't think we need to worry about that till next season. Big thing for me is can his smarts make up for his lack of foot speed. and will Sully give him actual rope next year for meaninful games.

Koivunen looks like he can hang. Smart passes in tight, finding ways to maintain possession, crafty...he looks more comfortable in the NHL than Puustinen ever did.
The proof will be in the pudding, for sure. McG and Koivunen look ready though, and the reviews even from Sully have been glowing. But we will see.Puustinen looked great with Malkin in his first 10-15 games and was a revelation on the PP.
Then he got Sully’d. Will be interesting where Koivunen is to start next year when “we have the most competitive training camp we’ve ever seen” or whatever bullshit the media comes up with.

Er, was he? He provided a different look with an additional RH trigger option, but VK is way more involved driving the flow.Puustinen looked great with Malkin in his first 10-15 games and was a revelation on the PP.
.get him a skating coach and let him train all summer. even if he only improves a little, it will be huge.I don't think we need to worry about that till next season.
