RDR2 is like actually being in the wild-west: it's miserable and tedious.

They should have just taken RDR1 and made better graphics, a more expansive overworld, and added some cooler missions. Instead they made a simulation game.

It's not even remotely close to a simulation game. If anything, all the survival stuff is made to feel important early but you don't have to spend a minute doing it in the future.

The biggest problem is mission design IMO. The core mechanics of the game aren't interesting enough to go into cover, go into dead eye, wait in cover, use a tonic, go into dead eye, etc etc etc. Rinse repeat rinse repeat.

If the mission variety and what you actually do in missions was different, or challenging things happening to throw a wrench into things, it would be more fun. Otherwise it just feels like a shooting gallery. It's the same problem I have with Uncharted games.

But the game world and narrative is so great I'm fine with it. I just will probably never go back unless I want to relive it. Like watching a movie.

I know we mean survival in different ways for some of these games but I despise survival games in general, as well as anything with heavy use of mutants or undead (except Fallout). So will pass on Days Gone.

RDR2 was indeed tedious. Abandon horse. You have to love the old West to really enjoy the game, imo. And after watching some Spiderman scenes on youtube I'll pass on that despite being a big Marvel fan. Only so much swinging and web-slinging I want to do in life.

Just finished the first 3 Uncharted and they were good but (possible spoilers if anyone hasn't played):

Was really digging the first one until the mutant undead bit popped up out of nowhere. Kind of blew the immersion in a semi-realistic treasure hunt out of the water. The next 2 were good progressions from the first but got tired of all the climbing and escape sequences. I also can't stand interactive cut scenes, especially if the button mashing comes out of nowhere while you're sipping your drink or something. Annoying. Just let the guy lift the f***ing log, fercrissakes. Do I really need to spam the triangle button for that?

I'm on Uncharted 4 now and the combat/graphics are much improved, but the story is so involved it feels more like a movie with climbing tests than anything else.

Don't get me wrong, I like them and recommend them, but they have their own quirks.

I played the Uncharted games when I was younger loved them. I picked up 4 and really struggled to stay interested. Like the story was good and it looked great, but it was rough.

I think cover based shooters are just really bland to me usually. Especially if the game is super linear.

It's just so boring and directionless. You could play the game for two hours and do nothing but ride on your horse looking for stuff to do. There's no sense of, "should I spend time doing missions? Is it worth it to spend an hour crafting stuff that might be useful later?" The tasking prioritization seems to be totally absent. Imo, they tried too hard and packed in too much and as a result failed to make anything other than the graphics themselves captivating and engaging. The mechanics are bad and the game itself feels like a chore to get through.

I think my biggest beef is the act of traveling within the game itself. Traveling every where on horseback takes f***ing forever and your horse gets tired or dirty easily which then means it even takes longer to get around and it just totally sucks the momentum out of the game.

Having played Demon's Souls, Dark Souls 1-3, and Bloodborne, I really want to try Sekiro. But the lack of invasion/summoning seems like a pretty big drawback compared to the other titles.

I must low key want to be a cowboy or something. I loved exploring the map and doing random stuff the most. It was one of the only open world games I never ever fast traveled even once it was unlocked.

Was the first one the same? I always think in my head, when I come across games where traveling is tedious.....”these devs are just trying to stretch things out cheaply”.

I'm in a similar situation. I like the Soulsborne games, but a friend who is better at them than I am really struggled to get through Sekiro. He said he fought one boss 50 times. 50! I don't have the patience for that.

I'm playing Nioh now, and enjoying it.

I think Sekiro is actually a lot easier than Soulsbourne games. You just cant play them like those games.

Bosses are still really difficult. But there are save points very close to them 99% of the time. So dying to them isnt really a chore.

Playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider now. Rocks. This is how a video game should be made -- just focus on gameplay, killer graphics and story, and don't worry about encumbrances like self grooming (RDR2) or an overly intricate skill tree (God of War reboot).
Square Enix with another winner here.

Loved/love RDR2. I don't know how many hours I've spent hunting/fishing/thieving, but it's a lot. I think it's just a matter of what kind of open world environment speaks to you. For example, I find the Elder Scrolls open world aspects incredibly boring and tedious, and don't especially care for the GTA games.

Got near the end of Uncharted 4 and the game started locking up. Then it put me in a loop of trying and failing to download a game update that I can't get out of, even with auto-updates "off" and manually deleting in-progress updates. So I may not finish it. Sucks.

does anyone have any good rts game suggestions? i came across age of empires again recently after many years away and trying to find similar games

I assume you have a PC since console and RTS is almost nonexistent.

I would try Company of Heroes 1 and 2. They both can be readily had fairly cheaply, but they go on sale a lot as well. They aren't right now on Steam, but even if you spent $20 bucks on it, it would still be very fun. $36 gets you the whole enchilada with all the Front DLC, which is essential.

GTAV to me was the best open world game out there, because the open world events are actually interesting and fun. Occasionally I just boot up that game just to play the golf, its that good.

I just dropped to much money on a new system along with VR setup....while I'm waiting for my new toy does anyone have any suggestions for games to DL when it all comes in?

Until a AAA title comes out that I'm interested in, I've been playing older games that have been on sale.

Conclusion so far - not entirely sure that Dying Light and Far Cry 5 aren't the same game. Just swap Zombies for Cultists. Or Cultists for Zombies. Whichever.

If you have a box of Depends around the house pick up Alien: Isolation (there is a VR version, I think, and I've "hacked" the Steam version to be VR.)

It is scary as Hell, though. (Thus the earlier-mentioned Depends.)

I’ve only got PSVR but Arkham is a great starting point and Beat Saber is generally considered the #1 stuck on a desert island game
