A reason I hate gaming in 2022. Been playing NBA2K 20 since it came out but it hasnt been working last few months. Try again yesterday and the server is down. Googled and it said the server permanently went down December so now I need to buy like NBA2K3 or 2K22 which is like $50-$60. Hella weak. Sports games dont update graphics or even add anything anymore. All they do is update the roster.

online ruined all the sports games in my opinion.
I dont play online and noticed the offline games suck now. I miss nhl 93 on my old computer. That game was the all time greatest.

That's a major reason I've fallen out of gaming for the most part in the last decade. I don't play online, I like immersive singleplayer stories, not multiplayer campaigns and stuff. But all the money is in online multiplayer so companies have been pretty much exclusively pushing that as a cash cow and don't service or update their story modes at all. Like Rockstar has been milking GTA5's multiplayer for nine years with no story mode DLC or add-on packs, and it's why they still haven't announced GTA6, just more ports of GTA5 to the new platforms.

NHL 93. Greatest Sports Game ever…. During our WestPac Cruise in 94, the boys in the squadron had a 16 team tournament (needed something to kill the time on a 7 month deployment.) Standard pyramid tourney format. Winners of each round advanced, etc. But that wasn’t the best part….

We also had a loser’s bracket. If you lost in the first round, you went into it, and you only advanced if you CONTINUED TO LOSE. That led to someone winning the title of Ultimate Loser. THAT, bracket was waaay more entertaining and stressful for the players because nobody wanted to “earn” that title. It got to the point where nobody cared who the champion was. All we cared about was who won the Ultimate Loser trophy.

NFL 2K5 is the GOAT of sports video games. It was so good that EA panicked and paid out the ass for exclusive rights to produce NFL games.

It was made with ESPN. So every game had Sportscenter segments with Berman, Wingo, Kolber. At halftime and after the game you had Chris Berman commentating on highlights of your actual game.

The franchise mode is still unmatched, you had control over everything.

You would choose on what training and prep was done before the game. When making a new franchise, you chose everything. Colors, logos, designed the uniforms, and designed and built your own stadium. You had a mansion where you would use earned points from games to buy everything. Furniture, art, memorabilia, video games (that you could actually play), pool tables, etc. And you had 1st person mode, where you actually were in the helmet of your created player on the field.

And to top it all off, it was only $20 new while Madden 05 was $50

My video game days ended in ‘97 when I started having kids, was in grad school, and got a real job…

NHL ‘93 was revolutionary because you had real NHL players from real cities. You couldn’t use the NHL team logos or franchise names until ‘94, but everything else was perfect. Bourque, Oates, Neely, Juneau, Ruzicka, and Byers when you needed to throw the knuckles. I LOVED playing with that team…

The Chicago team was a lot of fun as well. Roenick was a beast, and Stu Grimson and Steve Smith never lost fights…

I beg differ.

This is the GOAT of sports video games.

Hmmm, that one is damn close. I remember pissing my brother off playing with Tampa and just running Carl Crawford all day, he was impossible to throw out. I'm partial to Ken Griffey Jr Winning Run, if for nothing else then for nostalgia

NHL 2001 was always fun as well because Dafoe would go into God mode.

What sucks about gaming is u need an online component to even play games. With PS4 u have to pay for the online access. I dont even play online I play franchise with sports games or do like open world games I never finish.

Sports games suck now they hardly ever update gameplay or anything. They only ever update the rosters which u can do on ur own online which why I was playing 2K20.

Wasn’t the NHL 93 title actually called NHLPA 93? They didn’t use full team names, just the cities. I remember there being something strange about that one.

94 and 95 were pretty much the same. Just slightly polished movements, particularly from the goalies. Then for 96 i believe they added a juke button. Some players deked and some did a 360, none of it worked

Even though NHL 94 is the most famous, I have a lot of nostalgia for 96 because it was probably the SNES NHL game I played the most (as it came out when I was really starting to get into hockey).

The 16 bit version of Y'All Ready For This will never not get me pumped. The game played mostly like 94 and 95 but with slightly smoother player models. And for some reason it still had the Quebec Nordiques because the Avalanche didn't announce their name until late in the summer.

I majored in that game during college. Paid a lot more attention to that than my actual studies...

Yes, it was NHLPA 93. I had 92-96 and they were all tremendous. Can't remember which version introduced one timers though....

i think on console nhl 93 had just player names. it was nhlpa or something like that.
on pc it had everything.
the game would actually be good again if they put it on pc.

NHL '94 added the one timers.....

I didn't like '94 as much. Yes, they had the Logos and the full Team Name, but the goaltending was weaker, and they removed the fighting. Also the one-timers were pretty much unstoppable and scoring got a little out of control.

Streak UP the right wing, as soon as you reach the face off dot take a weak wrist shot. It went top corns almost every time. Or go around the net and cut back into the slot, the goalie inevitably gets stuck on a defender or just can’t get back in time to stop the high glove wrist shot.

It only worked well skating north though.

There were so many ways to score. Come down either wing and at the dot cut across and take a slap shot. Top corner every time. Behind the net to out front, shoot far side. The one you mention and of course the all time easiest, down the center throw a deke and boom. Lol

I miss the NHL games on PC . There was a web site where you could download graphic and roster updates made by other users, right down to the correct rink board ads

You can do that in online gaming. Especially in 2K the online communities create material for you to download. Like you can create expansion teams in 2K and people have spent hours and hours creating team templates. Same with draft years. Like I was playing NBA2k20 but In year I think 2025 I drafted Lebrons son. So years are also created.

2K just turned off their 2K20 servers permanently so I now need to upgrade.

Same thing with Madden when it comes to draft years I am in year 2033 and still playing Madden 2020

EA NHL is horrible tho

The controls were so sloppy my left thumb would get tired doing this. If you ever played the NCAA football games or old school Maddens on Genesis you know exactly the type of sloppy controls I'm talking about. It was almost like those guys were running on ice once they got moving. Pushing left was only a suggestion.

My favorite sports games:

- MVP 2005 - the gold standard for any baseball game
- NHL 96 (SNES era) - presentation was great
- NHL 2004 (PS2 era) - I don't think it was the best of that generation, and if anything it was antiquated by the time it came out, but it was the one I owned and put hours upon hours into
- FIFA 07 (PS2) - I'm not a passionate soccer follower beyond the world cup, but there's just something about FIFA games that are relaxing and hypnotic. Plus with practically every league in the world to jump around in career mode to, there's a lot of replayability.
- NFL2K2 - Not as revered as 2K5, but the features in that game were way beyond Madden for 2001 (Madden always had the better presentation though). My favorite thing was how it had realistic weather accumulation so if you had a snow game and just left the select play menu open on a kickoff for like 30 minutes the snow would pile up all over the field.
- NBA Jam Tournament Edition - Not a realistic simulation but great times were playing that game as an 8 year old. Too bad the Celtics sucked.
And if wrestling games count, WWF Wrestlemania 2000 and WCW/nWo Revenge for the N64 are the gold standards to me (I liked Wrestlemania 2000 better than No Mercy, that's my hot take)
