OT: Video Game Talk (oh, also the Week before the All-Star Break Pre-Game Talk "archive")

Finished Indiana Jones.

What a fun game that was. Played it slow, enjoyed the scenery and story. I’m a big Indiana Jones mark so I really liked the game.

Waiting pattern now for Mafia in August.
I saw some videos of the game and there was something about the character faces that looked offputting to me. Maybe it was the uncanny valley thing folks talk about. Did you notice any of that in your play through?

August is going to be a banger though. In addition to Mafia, the reboot of Toxic Avenger starring Peter Dinklage, Julia Davis, Kevin Bacon and Elijah Wood is going to drop. This is the first movie I've been excited for since The Avengers: Endgame.

Anyone get their Switch 2 yet? If so, initial thoughts?

I missed out on the initial pre-order but was able to buy it online today. Should be here in about 7-10 days hopefully.

From the showcases I'm interested in:

Resident Evil 9
Stranger Than Heaven
Super Meat Boy 3D
Clockwork Revolution (this one was a surprise as it did not look good from the first trailer)

Haven't gotten a Switch 2 yet and I really like Mario Kart but it does not seem worth it with the current lineup and it's a bit insulting the Switch 2 Editions are paid upgrades that don't even have anti-aliasing so emulation still looks better as a result. Maybe when MP4 is out I'll get one.

There were quite a few games that piqued my interest.

RE9: I keep seeing rumors that Ash will be a shared protag with Leon.

There Are No Ghosts at the Grand: Has potential. I need to see more first.

Keeper: Double fine has a good track record of interesting hits.

Super Meat Boy 3D: Just good-looking chaotic fun.

Ninja Gaiden 4: Loved the remaster of 2 that came out not so long ago. 3 wasn't good, but I still have faith.

Clockwork Revolution: even if it's just a Bioshock clone, that's fine by me.

Beast of Reincarnation: I can't believe Nintendo let Game Freak out of the Pokémon dungeons and let them make a game on a different platform.

Persona 4 remake: I shudder at the thought of how they will modernize this game, and how bad the localizers will butcher Kanji's and Naoto's stories, but hey. It's on game pass.

Mortal Shell 2: Looks like it has a crazy dark dystopian horror world. The ascetics alone has me interested.

Stranger Than Heaven: RGG has me hooked. I'll buy anything they put out.

Atomic Heart 2: This was the best trailer of the week for me. Just looks crazy fun. And I'm always in favor of hot robot women.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater: This isn't new, but I can not wait to play this game.

Pragmata: This game has some stunning visuals. Interesting concept, too, with the little psychic girl on your back as you shoot things.

Romeo is a Dead Man: Looks like slapstick gory fun.

Silent Hill f: This is looking like it will be the first new, actually good Silent Hill game in ages. With this and MGS3 Delta, I guess Konami finally gave up on their pachinko machines and decided to make good games again.

I do. Based solely on playing Mario Kart World:

The screen is bigger and dramatically better than the original Switch. The controllers feel like they're better quality, and the magnetization to attach them to the screen is a nice touch.

I didn't notice a huge difference between Switch 1 and Switch 2 while playing when docked, though. That might be TV dependent, and I have a short throw projector in my living room, so I might not be the best point of reference.

As far as issues, the system gets hotter than the sun. Even when playing docked. I had an issue over the weekend where I couldn't wake the Switch 2 up, and had to refer to a help page on Nintendo's website. Turned out to be no harm, no foul, but still a little concerning.

- My buddy and I got a Switch 2 from the most ghetto Target over the weekend lol. He hasn't hooked it up yet, but I am stoked because he's giving me his Switch OLED for a reduced price.

- @RoyIsALegend I hear that the Indiana Jones game is getting DLC.

- Update for the people who care: I am in the middle of the Gongaga region in FFVII: Rebirth. Still loving my time, but I admit there have been some frustrating sequences. For some reason, I feel this game has gotten like ten thousand times harder now than all the past regions combined. The Scarlet Gundam fight was a bit of a chore for me, and not in a fun way like some of these Summoning fights have been (Alexander was awesome, had to restart like 4 times, but I enjoyed it). I still love Queen's Blood, I still hate Fort Condor and I see I might have to finish some of them on Hard difficulty (yikes). I got a good chunk of Golden Saucer done, but I need to do another major piece of it. It definitely has gotten a bit grindy for me, but only because I am trying to do most of Johnny's Seaside Treasure stuff.

I have one as well.

Here are three observations:
1. Load times for Switch 1 games a lot better (not as dramatic as PS4 -> PS5, mind you, but this is a nice plus)
2. Docked Switch 2 has HDR, and certain games look a lot better on my LG OLED TV because of it
3. I could not play Switch 1 in handheld for longer than a half-hour without feeling a lot of pain in my hands (I needed to buy a third party accessory to get around this); however, I played 2 hours of Switch 2 in handheld this weekend without issue

The Xbox showcase was awful, though. Not one of those games caught my eye. Sony's, on the other hand, was awesome.
I thought Sony’s stunk outside of Bond. Sony’s first party studios are non-existent these days. Just not game’s I’m into. Xbox’s was okay, they used up all their great games last year and didn’t show Fable, Gears, new Forza which are all coming next year. Expected a weaker showing with that. 3 of the current Game of the Year candidates launched into gamepass already this year so Xbox is having a solid year.

Clockwork Revolution looks awesome though.

PC master race. I tried playing on an X box years ago but when I joined PC gaming there is no coming back.

Was looking at a refresh of my GPU. It's going to be cheaper moving forward to switch back to consoles.

The days of PC's being superior.... are still here. The days of most people being able to afford a decent GPU though are dead and gone.

It's only a matter of time before Nvidia stops making gaming GPUs. 95+% of their profits come from AI now. They have no reason to keep making gaming GPUs. I bet the 60 series will be the last for Nvidia's gaming department. We really need Intel and AMD to step up and make some proper ones.

Seriously... EVGA was killing it in the GPU market but Nvidia went Nvidia and EVGA decided to no longer put up with their shit and just got out of the business all together.

The enthusiast and above levels of gaming on PC are over unless you can plop out 1K every three years to stay on top of the curve. GPUs are starting to have worse life expectancies than smart phones and that is a f***ing issue.

I got a Gigabyte 5090 pre build PC for a good price. I think it will last for at least 5 years. No need for 6000 series. 6000 series might not be out for another few years. They will only release 5000 series super cards at the beginning of 2026.

Crazy 4K gaming experience with 120-165fps average. Yeah "frame generation" "AI", There will be millions of team green players that will be willing to purchase video cards because they are the most important thing to make the game look nicer and faster.

Don't need a heater anymore, 5090 itself warms up the whole room.

I just replaced my EVGA 980TI card. (waited like 7 years to upgrade GPU), I was always satisfied with EVGA. They used to have good perks like if there is a new card coming out in 6 month then you can upgrade it for the price difference. Customer service was superior to other companies. Surprised that EVGA withdrew from making modified GPU's. Don't they make some money from selling GPU's.

It will probably be 5 years before the 60 series is out, but I do believe that will be the end of their gaming brand. Why make cards that sell for 2K when you can put those resources in cards that will sell for 10-30k from big AI companies and animation studios? Their cards are constantly sold out from those companies, and they have no reason to make gaming GPUs. It's basically charity, good faith and some old school gamers at the company keeping the gaming brand alive right now. But sooner or later, there's gonna be a board room meeting from the investors, and they'll be forced to cave.

AI tech and software growth can't be stopped. It's even revitalizing the nuclear power industry. In 10 years everything from animation, movies, video games, and the very internet as we know it will be AI based, with human curation. I just hope we end up towards a Wall-E type future, and not a Skynet type one... Not that either a great, but I don't want to fight terminators.

Edit: With that 5090 series card, be sure you watch your power connector. Just like with the 4090, there has been reports of them melting. I think there's even a third party little middle connector thing you can buy, that will monitor it for you.

Brother, Nvidia does not have any competition with latest GPU 5080 and 5090. They are not going anywhere. They still need to sell their GPU's to team green. Millions of gamers will purchase Nvidia and there will be market for it.

5090 Hardware specs. It is insane. Even disabling AI it is still a beast of a card physically to play any game at 4K resolution and 140fps. Heats up my room. I need to open windows.
