OT: Video Game Talk (oh, also the Week before the All-Star Break Pre-Game Talk "archive")

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
Why do you say that? I'm having a blast with it so far
Nice that you dig it.

There are multiple issues, but above all else the writing is a complete deal-breaker. Full of nonsense like discussions about gender pronouns, characters behaving like dumb spoiled little children... I can't take any of it seriously.

Ah. Yeah, I recall the conversation around its release being bogged down by how "woke" it was. Which is a shame, because outside of a single skippable dialog option early on I've experienced none of that. The writing as a whole has been fine, nothing too distractingly cringe-worthy. Pretty standard BioWare fare so far

Everything I've seen on the game has me avoiding the shit out of it. Every character in the game is written like a puckish rogue millennial. It's basically a giant marvel movie. You can't be mean or kill any of your companions and they even removed harsh dialogue they deem too racist from previous games. Such as dwarves calling elves knife ears. Also them giving Morrigan a breast reduction operation was just stupid. It's a fantasy game, why can't the girls be hot?

Would it be more interesting to you if the characters endlessly talked about the Avs' hole at the 2C position?

Modern western devs have a tendency to go out of their way to make their female characters unappealing. The Asians do the exact opposite and sexualize the shit out of their games.

Not a difficult choice to pick which side I'm on.

I do keep finding myself gravitating towards Asian games lately. I'm absolutely loving Like a Dragon Pirate Yakuza right now. I also really liked Black myth wukong and then I keep seeing posts for this game that's also Chinese made.

If they're going to keep making high-end action RPGs with fluid gameplay and great character designs, then I'm going to keep buying and playing them.

Me too. The Asians don't take themselves too seriously. The games can be over the top fun, completely unhinged and full of sexy babes. On top of that the actual game mechanics are top notch as well.

The funny thing is that I don't play games for overly sexualized women in them. But I sure as shit don't play games to see girls that are ugly AF either. I don't know why there can't be a middle ground somewhere lol

I think its safe to say that there's enough room in the industry for both. For every Veilguard there's a Stellar Blade. As long as the games are fun to play who gives a f***? There seems to have been a crazy overraction in recent years for some reason. I mean, nobody was complaining when all the women in Elder Scrolls and Fallout looked like fugly neanderthals.

And that's fine if they wanna do that shit for new IPs, but when you take an established franchise and change it, f*** that.

Not that I care about looks in video games, but I feel the same thing happened in Horizon: Forbidden West (playing it currently). They totally made Aloy uglier than in the first game, and again I don't care that they did that, but there is also one part of my mind thinking that this is f***ing strange to me to the point that there had to be a meeting with all of these nerd blokes in the video game studio that made the decision to make her uglier just for DEI or something.

E: Yeah they totally did;

Insomniac also made Mary Jane uglier for Spiderman 2.

Intentionally making existing characters less appealing makes no sense.

 You're a drunk turtle. I honestly have no idea which side you might go for. A 10 at 2 and all that....

I normally fall on the side of who has the better gameplay. Yeah, I do require a good world and story as the bare minimum to get me to play, but beyond that if the gameplay itself isn't fun, there's just so many other games out there dying for me to give them a scratch. Just wrapped up the Dragon's Age steam bundle (the first three games and downloads). It was fun as hell, but I do think I cheated myself by not playing it sooner. It's not aged that poorly, but I imagine it would have blown me away if I played these games at launch.

Next up is finishing the Master Chief collection on Steam and then I'll figure out where to go from then. I might jump back into Star Citizen and see how much has changed in the two years I've been on hiatus.

Yeah it's weird and having a meeting about it is even more bizarre to me. However, not all studios intentionally do it, in the case of Edmonton BioWare and ME: Andromeda. Based on what I read, what happened is they put stupid people in high positions and got really bad character models from a lack of game production talent.

Both are stupid if you'd ask me. Having a meeting to make your characters uglier to appease some sort of oppressed group somewhere out there is stupid. Giving Tifa quadruple D's breast size in Final Fantasy VII with bouncing physics is also freakin' weird. They're both insignificant in the long run because all these characters are 1's and 0's in the end.

As someone who grew up with 2000 era fighting games, I'm perfectly fine with double Ds giggle physics.
