Looks like Vegas is going with a three goalie system again.
What make you say that, Adin Hill is the only goalie that isn’t waiver exempt.

Vegas could a in play for a cheap veteran backup in free agency if they don’t believe Akira Schmid or one of their younger waiver exempt goaltenders could challenge for the backup job.

Seems like a useful player that many teams could have found a use for and Devils could have gotten a better return for.

Crazy they gave away Holtz and Marino for spare parts. Holtz was their big pick and only had one full year up. Vegas fleeced them on this.

Pesce is a short term win and probably a long term loss but it is what it is. 23/24 Marino was horrendous and he clearly wasn't smart enough for Luke's defensive partner by sitting back. They needed a Devon Toews type which Pesce will be since he was one of the better rush defenders in the league which he'll be in a ton of situations because of Luke's rover ability

the only way Holtz turns into anything good is if Vegas builds an entire line around him and I doubt they'd be willing to do that.

Which makes the Thompson trade even dumber IMO. Should have given LT the reigns. Moved the more injury prone Hill and signed whatever backup they're planning on. LT-____-Schmid plus an extra 4 million to spend up front would be better for the team.
Nobody knows what really goes on behind the scenes. If Thompson for whatever reason wanted out then it is better to let him go. We went through that before with Fleury grousing about having to share time with Lehner. While Team McCrimmon isn't perfect, they've made the right moves far more often than not so I'm willing to trust their decisions for a while longer.

Where is Tom Fitzgerald to explain the reason the Devils made the moves they made today/tonight?

Going on line you can find press conferences from most of the other teams in the league.

Devils are on radio silence.

Both sides have said today LT requested the trade because he feels he's a #1 and wouldn't get that chance in Vegas. He said that's all it was so I'm left to assume if they moved Hill he'd have been fine staying.

And I'm not just going to blindly trust the guys that just in the past few months have drafted Connelly and traded a 2nd+ for Mantha.

Schmidt went on record that he wasn't happy and was likely a headache in resigning with NJD - its Schmidt Rights. It sucks trading a #7 pick for so low but clearly for whatever reason (coaching/ development/you pick) but he didn't fit what NJD is trying to do.

One bad year and he's no longer the goalie of the future?

Schmid was never "the goalie of the future" for the Devils and one of him or Nico Daws was on their way out.

Daws, Brennan, and Yegorov were all highly rated coming out of their respective draft classes.

That was not the case with Schmid.

Oh man, you're going to really lose your shit when McCrimmon trades away Hertl this summer.

I mean the likelihood of that happening is about as near to zero as there is with this team. The only guys less likely to move are Eichel/Petro/Stone. Hertl has a 3 team trade list and Vegas was one of the 3. He's not going anywhere after playing for Vegas for a month.

Cotter is a very hard-working lunch-pail player who occasionally will make an amazing scoring move or shot and is well worth his contract. The downside is that he's got a slightly deficient hockey IQ, probably from not being developed as an NHL-likely player until he was. Hate to lose him, you got a good one.

If Holtz doesn't work out, McCrimmon will dump him faster than month-old gravy. Schmid seems to be the real exchange here with Logan Thompson leaving and Vegas is very good at turning goalies around.
Month old gravy doesn't dump out very fast

Holtz was untouchable for Markstrom, but Cotter and 3rd LMAO. Great move by Vegas. Holtz needed out of that place and Schmid has a chance to be at least a solid/above average goalie.
Holtz definitely wasn't untouchable for markstrom. He was the guy initially involved last year at the deadline if you believe the reports.

There's a not too small number of people that would have preferred to give him up over Bahl.

Pretty sure both Calgary and San Jose passed on him as a piece in the trade for markstrom and Timo before it

Most devils fans knew he wasn't long for the team. The one devils fan puts him in a new trade proposal every 6 days or so

If the Devils put Holtz on the block what do people honestly think current day he would be worth ? I'm not a huge fan of this trade but no team is forking over a 1st round pick for him or even a 2nd. Maybe if it was a team like the Sharks to try to get a high end player on the cheap with an abundance of draft picks to trade away.

There is a reason that San Jose and Calgary passed on him. They would rather take a gamble on a draft pick than take in Holtz.

Didn’t Jersey take Holtz over Rossi? Yikes, yikes, yikes.

And before Tyson Foerster.

What's worse, in that 2020 draft the Devils had three first round picks. The only players currently on the roster from that draft are Mercer and Nico Daws; with longshots Ethan Edwards and Artem Shlaine still playing college hockey.

Not sure if that's an indictment of the Devils' drafting or player development.

terrible deal for NJ but Holtz was never going to get more than 10/game with NJ anyway

Not even 2 years ago, both were a big part of the future of the Devils.

Now, they get traded for Paul Cotter and 3rd (!!!).

Maybe they were not that good after all.

A late 2nd, at least.

Doesn't want tough questions only time they got them was about the mishandling of Holtz
