Negotiating goalie contracts has to be the most unsettling thing that a GM has to do. I feel sick to my stomach even just trying to decide if this is good or not.
What are Vegas options here?

They can let this season play out to see if subban can take over. He’s not a kid anymore. 2012 1st rounder with a late birthday. He will be 25 by the end of the year and almost 26 by the start of the 19-20 season.

If subban isn’t the long term answer hen Vegas can re up with MAF.

Personally I don’t think it is necessary to extend goalies too early. The demand is pretty limited each season plus the teams that generally need a goalie are not playoff caliber.

For teams that don’t have quality goaltending the price for a good one would not be considered high. It’s when you have goaltending that you can take it for granted.

Fleury a one hit wonder? lol. As a Flyers fan it pains me to say it, but while he may have had a bad season or two, he's hardly a one hit wonder.

He's mostly average with some peak years. And more than just two bad years. Still can't believe he won 37 games in 09-2010 with a 905 sv pct. He was awful but still won. proof wins mean nothing.

The Bruins pay one of the biggest chokers in the league 7m...

I don't love the Rask contract but he's unquestionably a better goalie than Fleury. He's got a .913 career Sv% ffs and was regarded as a huge choker prior to this season. I think what fans call choking is 99% variance but there's no reason to regard Fleury as an above average goaltender.

Can’t help but feel with age this is a lot of money...

Even with their cap space and even with it only being what, 8% of the cap or something.

Years 2 and 3 of that contract could be ugly. Goalies tend to fall off cliffs with no real warning.

If Fleury is a guy that ends up being effective right up to age 36-39 than it should work out great

To be fair, he was one of the best players in the playoffs. Still he's 33 and now signed till 36. I guess goalies do last longer than other players in the league but I think it still presents some risks.

Good on him though, he's a great guy.

it's also a proof of the management good will toward Fleury good services with the team, he kinda carried the team in the first 3 playoffs series.
He's also one of the most constant goalie and a freaking god in playoffs ( except he tends to get tired in finals or semi)
He's also of the most gentlemen and respected player in the league, he deserved more than 7M but settled to a great deal to help the team.

I love fleury and I think it was a good decision to re-sign him early.

i remember when he signed his 4 year, 23 million dollar contract on november 5, 2014 (almost 4 years ago, times flies), all but one comment on the first page was "he is a playoff choker" or "pittsburgh won't win a cup with him". good times really.

That cap hit is rough, but Vegas can eat that. Given Fluery's age getting it down to three years is the main thing, which is probably why that cap hit is so high.

The Bergevin special by Mcphee.

Extend his goalie 1 year before he is UFA while his value is at his peak.

We know how it turned out for Price this year.

7M is not the peak of fleury Value anyhow.
he is worth 8-9M and settled to 7M which is kind of a deal for a goaltender as constant as fleury and as good in playoffs as him.
it's also a show of goodwill and trust from the management

Actually surprised he took only 3 years but the $'s is good and he probably just wants to be in a place he enjoys for the remainder of his career.

Guy has won it all multiple times.
