Speculation: VGK & CHI: cap space to chase Marner

at say 11M (thx to the no state tax), I'm not saying that it will be impossible but it's going to be a tough one with the main core full of NMC/NTC/M-NTC with only 9 FWDs signed. That being said, I would highly doubt that it would be Chicago because they are older player and would likely seek teams that in win mode now... Unless Mark Stone is LTIR again.

Main FA: A. Holtz (F/RFA), N. Hague (D/RFA)

Eichel, Jack NMC $10,000,000
Stone, Mark NMC $8,000,000
Hertl, Tomas NMC/M-NTC $6,750,000 (3 teams trade list on July 1st)
Karlsson, William M-NTC $5,900,000 (10 no trade list)
Barbashev, Ivan M-NTC $5,000,000 (8 no trade list)

Pietrangelo, Alex NMC $8,800,000
Theodore, Shea NTC $7,425,000
Hanifin, Noah NTC $7,350,000
McNabb, Brayden NTC/M-NTC $6,750,000 (10 teams no trade list on July 1st)

Aadin Hill M-NTC $6,250,000 (10 teams no trade list)

Yeah. Even if there's heat to this whole Marner thing, it's hard to see it being Chicago that they clear cap with. There are a lot of other teams out there with Cap to spare right now...and trade protections make Chicago a pretty tough sell these days i'd imagine. Kind of unconventional given the allure of the big city and the history of the franchise, but kind of a mess right now.

Hertl with 3-teams is interesting for sure though. I could definitely see them folding on that gamble to roll the dice again with Marner. Lots of questionmarks with him and that contract, but there are so many teams desperate for a 2C...i bet they'd find a taker that isn't on his list.

Karlsson might be the easier piece to move, but with 10-teams, probably not Chicago.

Certainly avenues to move cap to make room for Marner. Whitecloud is another bunch of money that i think would be pretty easy to move. Just not sure it's a deal with Chicago. Unless someone with a M-NTC just loaded up all the Canadian teams and Buffalo.

Vegas decision to pursue Marner probably depends entirely on what is going to happen with Eichel cause I have no doubt that if he re-signs, it will be the biggest contract that Vegas has signed.

In what world is Vegas going to be able to pursue Marner? All of their larger contracts have NMC’s/NTC’s. Theoretically they could move Roy and Whitecloud, but they’d have to round out the remaining roster (3 forwards) at league minimum, and that’s just to go 12F-6D-2G. No reserves. The cap juggling throughout the season would be insane.

LA seems like the leading candidate to land Marner. They have the room right now, they have the long-term salary structure to absorb an overpay if they get in a bidding war (Kopi’s 7 gone after this year, Doughty’s 11 the following year). And they’re reeling from falling to the Oilers in the first round again.

I’ll be shocked if Marner isn’t a King July 1st.

In the world where Vegas always, literally ALWAYS finds a way.

They will make room by getting rid of players like Karlsson and a couple of others....Marner will be attracted to play there because Vegas is always competitive and he won't have nearly the pressure to be the number one guy on this team as that role belongs to Eichel....the Knights will make this work.

He wasn't/isn't the #1 guy in Toronto.

That's Matthews It's always been Matthews

Well on July 1st the Vegas GM calls Marner’s agent and says “Hey, we really like Mitch, how much would it take to get him to sign here?”

Mitch’s agent gives them an amount, the two parties squabble back and forth until they come to an amount and pay structure that works for both sides, hammer out the trade protection details and VOILA! Mitch Marner is a Las Vegas Knight!

Complicated I know but these things happen every year in the NHL.

It’s quaint that you think that that call will happen on July 1 and not have already been sussed out beforehand.

I’m not that convinced Vegas is a longterm contender anymore

They looked old and slow and guys like Pietrangelo & Stone aren’t getting any younger
