@DennisTFP: Kings looking at veteran goalie as precaution in case Quick isn't ready to start season off wrist rehab. Voukoun/Khabibulin being considered

I kinda thought they needed one for Manchester anyway, with Bartosak and Berube being the only others signed, I can't imagine either could step in as a backup if Quick/Jones got hurt. Of course, now that Quick may not be ready for the first few weeks of the season that need becomes more obvious.

Keep in mind, the first quarter of the season is really important, 13 of 20 at home.

Be interesting to see what vet would sign under those terms though. "We might need you if Quick is hurt but if he isn't we don't" Sounds like a try out at best to start, may get more if Quick is hurt long-term but odds are Quick is healthy by October/early November if he even misses time and guys like Vokoun/Bulin/etc. can see the writing on the wall. If Quick is back they aren't going to carry three goalies and they aren't going to cut Jones so off to the farm goes whoever this vet goalie is. If I was someone like Vokoun it'd be a last resort option if nothing else at all materializes.

Personally, I think Jones is as good an option as any of these older hacks.

As for a backup, sign someone inexpensive who will be able to clear waivers when Quick is 100%. Hell, David Leneveu backed up Lundqvist in the finals... there's dozens of those guys!

Looks like Bernstein is bored. If Quick isn't ready, they have Jones as a more than capable goalie who can fill in until Quick is in game shape. What are they going to do if Quick gets back? They can't send Jones down, and none of those vets are signing a two-way deal and the Kings aren't going to carry three goalies.

They're also tight up against the cap, so this makes zero sense whatsoever.

If Quick isn't ready to go, it does make sense to have a veteran on the bench to back up Jones. IMO, Berube isn't NHL ready, and Bartozak certainly isn't either. So getting a veteran back is really their only choice.

So why not just wait until you know and sign someone to sit on the bench and have the best seat in the house? Kings won't know until closer to camp and there is always a vet goalie lying around every year. last year was theodore, this year it'll likely be Vokoun or someone else. Currently Borduer, Vokoun, Khabibulin, Thomas, Giguere (though he might be retired :dunno:), Bryzgalov and Elliott are all available and there isn't much demand for more than maybe one or two of them. Someone will be waiting into August, why not wait until then? All this is is Bernstein looking to drum up hits on something that's likely either not on DL's radar, or is just a faint blip.

This may have had a lot more momentum in early August, not July.

I'm fine with waiting.

All I am saying if by October Quickie can't go, then make a move. Only caveat with that is if Sutter/Lombardi already know that Quick wont be ready, then it might make some sense to bring a guy in earlier than October.

The veteran could also serve double duty as insurance, but also as a presence to make sure there's no complacency coming from Martin Jones who might think he has the backup job in the bag. Get him in the right competitive mindset so that he's looking to put in the work to protect his spot with the NHL club.

Unless he's the type that crumbles under that kind of pressure, in which case, oops?

I don't think a guy who did what he did against the Duckies in his first NHL game is likely to crumble under pressure....

Pointing out one game isn't really a strong argument that would convince me of anything, to be honest.

Go back through history and you'll find a lot of athletes in both hockey and other sports where players shine brightly then for whatever reason they fizzle away into obscurity.

Am I saying that's going to be the case here? Not really, but I'd also point out that he doesn't have a lengthy resume under his belt to tell you if his 19-game stint (his first in the NHL) was a flash in the pan or signs of bigger and better things to come either.

Obviously one game doesn't make a career. Nor does winning his first eight games with three shutouts. But they are indicators that he's not a good candidate for a meltdown. Sure, could he be the NHL's Super Joe Charbonneau? Possibly, but unlikely IMO.

I see what your saying... But I wouldn't be surprised if there are a hand full of goalies who wouldn't mind jumping in behind the Kings defense, recording some stats then moving on. I bet Scriven's account would say its not too bad a deal.

i would send a conditional 4th for remier It worked once with Scrivens as a throw in lol I think with our goaltending coaches he could do quite nicely. I also think he could be had cheap.

I hope if they sign a temp goalie that Jones is still the starter until Quick heals. Jones deserves it and he's proven himself plenty capable of being a starting goalie. The experience wouldn't hurt and I'm sure Jones would be happy to get some playing time too.

Elliott? He's still with the Blues? Isn't he?
