Well, JR just extended Sullivan for another 4 years, so if he thought the path to being a head coach was going to be easier in Pittsburgh, he miscalculated.

I think he might be JR's replacement. Vellucci is obviously great behind the bench, but I think he might be as well suited for the front office.Well, JR just extended Sullivan for another 4 years, so if he thought the path to being a head coach was going to be easier in Pittsburgh, he miscalculated.
I guess anything is possible. But AHL head coach is an odd way to set up a succession plan. He probably still gets more exposure as a coach for the beloved Pens AHL team and, worst case, he's in his comfort zone with JR again.I think he might be JR's replacement. If this were the plan, it means that Ron Francis is not in line for JR's job, and it seems like a path with more resistance than wanting to be a part of the borg in Raleigh.I think he might be JR's replacement. Why are we still taking about this?

Why the hell would JR extend Sullivan? Good God this guy is losing it, at least what he had left of it
Good point.Because we're desperately trying to distract ourselves from Aho's imminent trade to MTL.
This thread title bothers me. Vellucci can't "part ways" all by himself.
But he was also Asst. GM/Player Development and part of the hive mind. Not sure how that plays/played into salary comparisons.Saw some blurb on Twitter (Friedman? I think) suggesting that Vellucci was asking for 600K on his next contract.
If that's true then I get it. That's like 4 times or more an average AHL coach salary.

You have to wonder how much of that title was the PK, JR, RF good old boys network. But he was also Asst. GM/Player Development and part of the hive mind. Not sure how that plays/played into salary comparisons.
As a self-proclaiming feminist, I have as much disdain for the OBN as anyone. However, in this case its pejorative weight is mistaken. You have to wonder how much of that title was the PK, JR, RF good old boys network.

Vellucci was in the role of AGM for several years then took the Checkers job. I have a bias toward Vellucci, but I think it is reasonable to say he was partially responsible for the organization finally having depth at the AHL level both before and during his tenure as coach.
Gets to be the GM and HC that must have been what the appeal was.
Yeah, but this lines him up for the GM slot with the big club....sort of in competition with the current AGMs, Karmanos being one, I think. He was about as much of a GM for the Checkers as he's going to get to be for Wilkes-Barre. As the assistant GM/Director of Hockey Operations here, I'm sure he got a lot of input about bringing in whatever players he wanted outside the ones with 2 way contracts, so basically it'll be pretty much similar for Wilkes-Barre.
