I think he might be JR's replacement. Vellucci is obviously great behind the bench, but I think he might be as well suited for the front office.
I guess anything is possible. But AHL head coach is an odd way to set up a succession plan. He probably still gets more exposure as a coach for the beloved Pens AHL team and, worst case, he's in his comfort zone with JR again.

If this were the plan, it means that Ron Francis is not in line for JR's job, and it seems like a path with more resistance than wanting to be a part of the borg in Raleigh.

When was the last time a GM rode off into the sunset and named his successor? Seems like a rare scenario/outcome of a team replacing a GM.

The way in which I've viewed it is that the Pens are very soon going to be going into a dark, dark period. JR is not setting them up for the next decade or so to go very well, and the second that Crosby or Malkin start showing their age, its going to be like rats fleeing a flooding basement. Vellucci probably recognized this and realized he might have a better chance of getting over there and waiting for his moment, as he has already proven himself as a talent developer. Probably figures his needs align best with their needs a couple years from now, so why not make himself known.

Why the hell would JR extend Sullivan? Good God this guy is losing it, at least what he had left of it

It was only a matter of time before JR did JR things over there. Given how much dislike I have for the Pens, I wish them nothing but the same kind of situation he created here when he kept chasing it as it had become clear it was already past. 7+ years of purgatory for that fanbase would do me well.

You mean he's not putting the timbers of shipyardstocks that slope into the water and along which a ship or large boat is launched into pieces?

Is he leaving!?

Saw some blurb on Twitter (Friedman? I think) suggesting that Vellucci was asking for 600K on his next contract.

If that's true then I get it. That's like 4 times or more an average AHL coach salary.

But he was also Asst. GM/Player Development and part of the hive mind. Not sure how that plays/played into salary comparisons.

You have to wonder how much of that title was the PK, JR, RF good old boys network.
As a self-proclaiming feminist, I have as much disdain for the OBN as anyone. However, in this case its pejorative weight is mistaken.
Vellucci was in the role of AGM for several years then took the Checkers job. I have a bias toward Vellucci, but I think it is reasonable to say he was partially responsible for the organization finally having depth at the AHL level both before and during his tenure as coach.

My point is that Vellucci has been tied to PK and JR for years going back to the compuware days. When PK decided to sell off the Plymouth Whalers, they gave their buddy Vellucci a landing spot as AGM right before they sold it. It was clearly a good old boys move putting him in that job.

He was about as much of a GM for the Checkers as he's going to get to be for Wilkes-Barre. As the assistant GM/Director of Hockey Operations here, I'm sure he got a lot of input about bringing in whatever players he wanted outside the ones with 2 way contracts, so basically it'll be pretty much similar for Wilkes-Barre.

Yeah, but this lines him up for the GM slot with the big club....sort of in competition with the current AGMs, Karmanos being one, I think.
