Fantilli has 7-5-12 and a plus-9 rating in the 10-plus games since Monahan went down. He played 18:12 on Thursday, led the Blue Jackets with five shots on goal and seven shot attempts, and won 9 of 17 faceoffs despite spending most of the night against Vegas’ superstar, Jack Eichel.

I think we're a bit fortunate to be tied. That power play. LOL. Seems like old times.

First game of the year and I'm 2000 miles away to see it. If anybody ever gets a chance to come out and see a game in Vegas do it. It's a different environment.
Good for you, CR.

He and Bedard have the same # of goals. Neat.

Went a couple of years ago. Loved it. Really enjoyed the plaza out front pre game. Thought the showgirls dancing by the glass during warm up in the visitors end was funny. Only in Vegas.

You don’t put any stock in the measurement of takeaways, or any stock in actually taking the puck away?
i don't put any stock in the tracked statistical categories of takeaways/giveaways.

it doesn't reliably measure anything. most giveaways aren't credited as takeaways. so forcing a giveaway is functionally the same as a takeaway but not tracked as such. also the nature of the stat doesn't map to meaningful analysis. you can only register a giveaway if you have the puck, and a takeaway if you don't. good players have the puck more, so as a result they invariably register more giveaways than takeaways.

case in point, this year's three highest-scoring forwards.
  • mackinnon: 18 takeaways, 82 giveaways
  • draisaitl: 23 takeaways, 59 giveaways
  • kucherov: 17 takeaways, 81 giveaways
draisaitl's underlying stats this year are selke-worthy on the defensive end (surprising given his reputation) but even guys who are reputationally high-end defenders still have take/give stats that don't line up with that.
  • marner (39 take, 72 give)
  • hagel (18 take, 66 give)
  • reinhart (17 take, 46 give)
obviously taking the puck away (or forcing a giveaway) is a good thing, but the nature of the game and the way the stat is tracked makes it a meaningless category to evaluate anything.

Yeah … I don’t think we win that game last night without Johnson stripping the Vegas player , and then bursting down the ice for a breakaway .
taking the puck away = good

"takeaways" and "giveaways" as statistical categories = functionally useless due to the nature of the game + how it is tracked
