A Professor who took on a challenge to climb Mt. Everest to prove that vegans “aren’t weak†has unfortunately passed away. Maira Strydom reached the peak of the mountain this week but later passed away from altitude sickness.

I'm confused. Everyone keeps saying she reached the summit but the article says she had to turn back on the last leg.

It also says her husband and her were both doing it to "prove vegans weren't weak" and she died and he was injured...

Maria Strydom died on Saturday afternoon after having to turn back from the final leg of the expedition because she felt unwell.

Dr Strydom had begun climbing from Camp 4, the highest camp before the summit, on Friday but was forced to turn back when she felt unwell.

She returned to the camp site at 26,085ft with a sherpa while others in her group carried on. Her husband is thought to have reached the summit.

So maybe the husband did make it?

yes, no question, the big one being not to force climbers to turn around at a specific designated time. Anatoli Boukreev's decision to descend back to camp 4 ahead of his clients (he was guiding without bottled oxygen) probably sealed the deal. Plus (obviously) the storm that hit the climbers mid afternoon.

Bottom line is that high altitude sickness can strike anyone regardless of whether they were or were not vegan.
