Getting back another D is pretty important with Greene + Vatanen traded and Butcher being injured. Claesson was an analytics darling back in Ottawa, not sure what happened to him but at worst he's a body for Bingo.
In the recent Atlantic article, Fitz discussed how he learned how important it is to have vets surrounding the kids. This move could be an attempt to bring another vet to Bing.

F BOB!!!!!

jk whatever, would've been nice to have a 2nd rounder, but Kuokkanen is a good player.

AHL career production:

Nick Merkley (23 y.o) .823 P/G (130 games)
Lanne Kuokkanen (22 y.o) .75 P/G (160 games)
Brett Seney (24 y.o) .739 P/G (92 games)
Joey Anderson (21 y.o) .702 P/G (57 games)
Michael McLeod (22 y.o) .62 P/G (108 games)

Despite being the 2nd youngest player on the list, LK has the most AHL games played and 2nd highest P/G.

I'm thinking too far ahead, but Kuokkanen would require being protected for the Seattle expansion draft. Seattle's GM Ron Francis was in Carolina when they drafted Kuokkanen.

Brian Lawton on NHL networking on the Friedman reporter deal. Says Vatanen is a better player than Greene and Scandella who returned 2nd’s
Scandella did get St Louis’s 2020 2nd
Were Greene and Scandella on IR when they were traded?
The Habs retained 50% on Scandella and got a 2021 conditional mid round pick instead of a prospect. We got a 2021 2nd for Greene, which is actually considered to have the same value as a 2020 3rd. (Yes, that means the 2021 5th for Simmonds is even worse than it sounds.)

I’m disappointed we couldn’t get Buffalo’s 3rd or Carolina’s 3rd outright with the chance for it to turn into their 2nd. It is what it is, Sami played 50 games last year and hasn’t played since Feb 1st.

The prospect is intriguing, I wonder if he’s a potential 3rd line center. McLeod looks like a future 4th line center and we could move Zacha to the wing.

Bob was referencing Kuokkonen as the 2nd rounder in his tweet. Not Kuokko + 2nd.

Rereading that Tweet you're correct...geez Bob, you really got us with that one. It was an easy mistake to make though since he previously said the deal was a pick and prospect. He only specified the prospect when most of us thought he was specifying BOTH in his Tweet.

Koukkanen is immediately one of our top prospects. Maybe the return is underwhelming but we needed to add NHL ready players to our pool.

It’s easy to sit here and say “dang he should’ve got more” as if he was able to get more and took a worse deal?

The market is the market. Vatanen was available, everyone knew it and this was the best deal we could get. He may play 10 games the rest of the season. Who is paying up for that?

The trouble with Kuokkanen is that he is waiver-eligible starting next year. It's unlikely he gets claimed, but that just complicates where he goes next season.

That said, I do like getting Claesson back in the deal because Binghamton could use a left-shot D whether it's Mermis or Claesson.
According to Cap Friendly’s waiver calculator, he’s waiver exempt until 2021-2022. I assume that’s right, waiver rules make my brain hurt so I use Cap Friendly.

I wonder if Kuokkanen plays straight away in New Jersey, replacing Simmonds spot in the lineup.

Merkley was demoted back to AHL.

Hopefully this deal doesn’t fall thru.

Hurricanes are going to have to do a lot of shuffling around to fit Vatanen and Skjei under the cap with the injuries to Pesce, Mrazek, and Reimer.

I would expect Devils to call up Kuokkanen though. Give him a shot on the NHL team to end the year and see what he has before he’s waiver eligible next year.

if he did well enough to warrant protecting, then that's great

but odds are he's gonna be subpar, and if he's the guy who ends up being taken, then great
