The only thing missing from Arizona's rebuild is a goaltender they can trust. With expansion, it's going to be difficult for the Avs to keep both of these guys, so it seems like ARZ can benefit from this as they are both young and fit the mold of that team.

Obviously this is closer to the trade deadline and even offseason, but what prospects would ARZ part with for one of these two?

I know you're an Avs fan...but I don't think the Avs would contemplate moving either of these guys right now. In fact, as henchy mentioned on our board, I'd say there's a decent chance the Avs to to keep both and strike a deal with LV (e.g. give LV something and expose Soderberg). It's pretty convenient to have both of them, and I don't think you can definitively say one is better than the other right now.

pretty true if anything a move wont be made until at least tdl if there is one. avs need to evaluate them all year.

I don't think the Avs should entertain the thought of trading Pickard.

Solid goalie.

Something like:

Smith
Wood
Merkley

For

Varlamov

Work for either side?

They sent us Wood, so that probably wouldn't work. I don't think the Avs would want Smith and his big contract. If the Coyotes add a goalie, Smith is getting bought.

Idk what the Avs needs are with prospects, but Dvorak, Strome, Chychrun, Domi, Duclair aren't going to be moved for Varlamov or Pickard.

Is Pickard ready to be a starter without a solid option behind him? With Varlamov's injury history, I don't think the Avalanche should consider any moves unless Pickard is ready to take the reigns.

Doesn't mean they don't like the prospect, just the cost of doing business.

I don't know if the Avs want that contract either, but the money and term are similar.

Merkley or something along those lines for Pickard once Smith's diagnosis comes in works for me.

If you read the OP I made it clear that this move would not be done now, but probably at the trade deadline/off-season. If the Avs are able to strike a deal with LV and can keep both of them, trading one of these two is still inevitable within the next two seasons.

Of course a lot can happen between then and ARZ might not be the best trading partner at that point, but just speculating for the future.

Even though I trust him, we'd probably want a vet backup like what Bernier is to Gibson. I think the Avs would prefer to keep Pickard because of his contract and upside, but Varly's play will go a long way to determine which route they take. On the flip side, I see Pickard as the guy who would be more attractive to a team like ARZ.

I was thinking Crouse as the main part coming back, depending on how his development goes.

I don't think we should exaggerate the expansion draft threat. Loads of teams have two goalies they'd prefer to hang on to and you can even make a trade where you give LV a pick to not grab one of the goalies, should you want to hang on to both.

Avs should only trade one of their goalies if they get a great return at this point.

Its been widely rumoured that the NHL is going to have rules in place to deter expansion draft lottery rules circumvention. They want Las Vegas to be competitive from day one and them taking picks over better players does not do that.
One of Varmalov/Pickard will be gone

Even if that does prove to be true, lots of other teams have duo's just as good as the Avs.

PIT with Murray/MAF
PHI with Mason/Neuvrith
WPG with Hellebyuck/Hutchinson

Only the bolded is on par with COL's pair., and I bet Rutherford addresses that before expansion, especially with the cap savings moving Fleury will give them. Hutchinson is the obvious one out in WPG and if I'm an LV GM I select Pickard as at least a backup over Philly's pair.

You won't get Crouse for Pickard.
If you want to trade Varlamov you need to take Smith back.
ARI doesn't need a third goalie and a trade Pickard for Smith won't happen.
ARI will ride Smith/Domigue for 3 years and Domigue is even better than Pickard. If Smith is injured Peters is good enough to backup Domigue. If ARI needs a goalie they could take one off waivers, sometimes guys like Berube are available for free. Pickard might be worth a 3rd rd pick, if a team is desperate maybe a 2nd rd pick.

What's funny, Vegas might get picks in the draft not to draft players they wouldn't draft in the first place :)

Lol, we drafted him in the 2nd round and he's only increased his value since then. Martin Jones is the best comparable.

COL were lucky when they drafted Pickard at #49. DAL wasn't that lucky when they drafted Jack Campbell at #11 in the same year. Martin Jones wasn't even drafted. What does this tell us. Draft positions mean nothing 6 years later.

Only what matters now is the goalie market and if your name is not Matt Murray you won't get much. Especially now when many teams want to trade goalies because of the expansion draft and after the draft there will be much more UFA goalies available than any year before because teams won't sign them earlier otherwise they would have to protect them.

But this shouldn't matter much. COL might protect Pickard and expose Varlamov in the draft. Vegas should take a 2nd rd pick not to draft Varlamov and draft Soderberg or Grigorenko instead.

First of all the Avs don't have to trade a goalie at the moment, we have all season to decide what we want to do with our 2 starting caliber goalies.

Second if we do trade Varlamov to Arizona we don't HAVE to take Smith back, nor would we probably want to. The Avs are the ones dealing from a position of power, Arizona doesn't get to dictate the terms on how they acquire our goalie. The only way you'd probably convince the Avs to take Smith back on his crap contract, is by handing over some top end prospect on top of it, which I'd doubt Arizona would want to do.

Third to say Domigue is better than Pickard is laughable, Pickard has posted better numbers in each of his seasons on an arguably weaker defensive team. Stats don't lie.

Lastly, I'm not sure how a 24 year old former 2nd round pick (Pickard), who has only gotten better every year in the league has decreased in value to only a 3rd round pick? That doesn't even make sense. If the Avs trade Pickard I'd expect a much better return than a 3rd round pick.

Depending on Smith's injury status, I'd be comfortable going through the road trip with Domingue and Peters, watching the waiver wire, and then re-evaluating. When they leaned on Louis last year when Smith went down, he proved himself well enough to carry the load for a stretch.

When Varly's bad, he's worse than Picks when Picks is bad. But in an average match he's clearly the better goalie, and when he's on point he hits a level Pickard just doesn't have in him.

We have not seen the worst of Picks. He's not battle tested.

This thread was started from an COL fan, right. ARI doesn't need COL.

Please tell me Pickards numbers.

Please tell me Pickards numbers.

Pickard in his two seasons: .932 SV% 2.35 GAA and .922 SV% 2.56 GAA

Domingue in his two seasons: .911 SV% 2.73 GAA and .912 SV% 2.75 GAA

Not to mention Pickard has had to play on considerably weaker defensive teams. I think pretty much any GM at this point in time would consider Pickard the better goalie.

The fact that is thread was started by an Avs fan means nothing. Most Avs fans would agree that we don't have to trade either, and if we want to keep both we can give Vegas a pick to not pick whomever we decide to expose.

IF we trade Varlamov, it will be for an upgrade elsewhere. We sure as hell won't take back bad contracts like Smith in the process as we would also be looking to shed salary.

Sorry, but what does GAA say. This is a team stat.

save% last season
.922 Picard
.912 Domingue

EVsave% last season
.925 Domingue
.923 Pickard

Now you should know that Picard only played 20 games last season and 15 of them were with enough rest between games.
Domingue played 39 games with months of starter workloads and less rest between games.
If you want to compare both you should compare same usage.

EVsave% with enough rest
.934 Domingue
