I argued with more than a few Oilers fans that wanted to re-sign Vinny for up to $2 million per season last regular season when the Oilers were really rolling.

He was a fan favorite for sure, and overvalued by a pretty big chunk of the fan base.

I'm glad management saw him for what he was. He's replacement level. I'm glad he got his money though. Seems like a good dude, and he never gave up on the NHL dream.

He's one of those players who can easily be a "fan favourite" on a cheap contract. He's a great story of perseverance, clearly works hard, and occasionally does some physicality that makes fans cheer.

But those sort of players instantly become absolute whipping boys when they sign that "big contract" to cash in.

How does this help us, exactly? We'd just paying your throwaway the same as if we put VinnyD on waivers. Better to see if he gets picked up than try yet another throw in. We have plenty of those already.

So waive him then. He will clear and you will still have him. You can't bury his entire deal. I think the help was outlined pretty clearly. Gives both teams a chance to get rid of a guy who isn't working. Nobody is gifting the Canucks a quality asset for Desharnais.

Team isn’t looking for a quality asset they’re looking to get rid of the entire deal because they want to spend the cap elsewhere. If they can’t do that they’ll probably waive him. If they end up waiving and he clears they probably just keep him down there for now and reassess or try again to move him with a slight sweetener. Getting Brown for the same price as VD does nothing to the cap which is the entire point of the deal, and is actually worse because there’s no way to get rid of the retained money. At least keeping VD in the minors now could lead to a team calling later.

Whenever a FA hasn't worked out Allvin has tried to get them to whatever team they want to go to, among teams that are interested. He did the same thing with Sprong, sending him to Seattle instead of just putting him on waivers, and Mikheyev chose to go to Chicago instead of San Jose.

It's nice of Allvin. Desharnais is going to get his $4M either way. If no other team in the entire league wants him (unlike Sprong and Mikheyev), then he can just collect that paycheck in the AHL.

I don't believe no team wants him, Anaheim just paid assets for Trouba, someone will take a 6'7 RHD for free.

He's a good PK'er, good crease clearer, and he plays RHD, a mid to bad team with a bad PK would be interested.

Sabres have like 10m in space, 22nd place PK, and could use insurance if they plan to move Jokiharju

Blue Jackets have like 30 million in space, 28th ranked PK, an RHD on LTIR and they just traded Jiricek, they tried to trade for Trouba so clearly they want to add at RD

Predators have 8.5 million in space and are super light on the right side due to injuries

Senators are playing Hamonic on their 1st pairing

Pittsburgh can take back Desharnais as a stop gap in a Pettersson trade instead of retaining an extra $2m

There's options out there, and probably teams nobody is thinking of like Anaheim for Trouba.

If the Canucks just wanted to get rid of Desharnais to the worst team in the league, they would have done it already, the fact that Desharnais hasn't been put on waivers leads me to believe they've given him options in regards to the teams that are interested, even if they get nothing back in trade out of it.
