Proposal: Vancouver-New Jersey

Seems like NJ is only giving up what is palatable. Hischier + is the only base I would consider if I’m the Canucks.

Not that i'd expect NJD to even entertain that, but yeah. This proposal is basically just the Devils casting off what they can painlessly afford to give up, late 1sts, expendable Middle-6 Forward, rumoured malcontent defence prospect, big cap dump...for one of the best players in the entire NHL, and a clear perennial Norris contender Defenceman on an absolute steal of a contract.

It just doesn't really make sense for the Devils to be giving up a core piece like Hischier or anything...but there's just not much else that would make sense for Vancouver. I don't think Nemec has held his value well enough to be that "centerpiece", a RHD behind what would be Hronek and with Willander their top prospect coming shortly doesn't make sense. Plus a shotgun spread of late 1sts and 2nd rounders and "quantity over quality" just doesn't do it for moving a player like Quinton Hughes.

Canucks are in a messy situation at the moment, but as long as they've got Quin Hughes, they're closer to competing than rebuilding. Especially with Canucks ownership as they are, it's always going to tip toward throwing out whatever assets they do have, to try to build something and get Hughes re-signed in Vancouver. Especially if the "offer" is just a big list of that aforementioned "quantity over quality".

You're assigning known value to a 1st that wasn't known at the time of the trade. They didn't trade 3rd OA, they traded their 1st thinking that they were one Erik Karlsson away from a Cup. If they already knew it'd be 3rd OA they don't make that deal.
Yep someone commented that earlier and I'd agree. I think it's still similar to the realm of where the OP posted vs the Mercer, Nemec, and one 1st. That's kind of what started this string of conversation.

Remove 2 First round picks and Palat; add Hamilton

This is in both the Hughes and Vancouver blow up threads….

He has only 2 yrs left in contract. He will not return anywhere close to that.

Mercer, Nemec, and a 1st is the more realistic price
I can't please everybody, even if I over or under pay. I overpay in my proposals because it'll make fanbases stop crying. But it's only fair in my opinion.

Why are we checking back in a year? You don't think there's a chance he gets dealt this summer? It's not like the Canucks are in good shape, you traded away one of your top forwards in Miller and most likely going to lose another one in Boeser, everything reeks of a rebuild process. I be shocked if Quinn wants to stick around for it.
No, you don’t trade a player like Quinn unless he says he wants out or he rejects your contract offer. Management more or less already said this at the year end press conference.

I’m sure he would like to play with his brothers. But I’m also sure he would heavily consider playing on a very good team for more money as opposed to what NJD can offer cap wise. I’m not sure it’s as much leverage as speculation would lead you to believe.

He has his entire career to play with his brothers. I dont think it's something that has to happen for him in the near term.

The Devils have a full pipeline of good young defenseman. We already have a Luke Hughes and Seamus Casey. Obviously Quinn would be a big upgrade and makes us better now, but we really don't need him, we're pretty well positioned to be competitive for the next 5-10 years. We can't be trading our Selke nominated captain or our elite 2 way winger for a guy who may very well sign here as a UFA.

There really isn't a scenario where we include either in a trade to Vancouver, and thinking otherwise is the epitome of arrogance.

We have plenty of valuable assets available that aren't Nico and Bratt. If none of them interest you, we'll just wait for him to come play here for free.
I have a feeling Luke will end up in Vancouver and Quinn re-signs longterm. ;)

New Jersey:
Quinn Hughes

Vancouver:
2 First-round picks
2nd 2026
Simon Nemec
Dawson Mercer
Ondrej Palat
That’s actually about the cost. Likely Heischer would need to be included in place of Palat though.
I just don’t know if having the three brothers is a recipe for winning. These are smaller framed guys who seem to get injured a lot. Especially Jack. His shoulders might be a big problem going forward.

A lot harder to do when they have wives and possibly children dictating where they move to or want to live

Its one thing for Quinn to be the breadwinner and decide for them; its another for your wife and kids to be big fans of, say, the West Coast and then convince them to move to New Jersey lol

Not saying this is the case but odds are, unless its a farewell tour as he retires, Quinn comes sooner than later; before family matters.. matter lol

NJ isn’t going to gut its team to add Quinn. Conversely Vancouver isn’t going to trade him for thr rental price unless and until they have absolutely no alternative. I have no doubt another team would offer more than a rental price but unless Vancouver allows thr third team to arrange a long term deal with Quinn they won’t get the core piece back they want unless it’s some player who for some reason is trying to force his way out of his current team and is open to a long term deal with Vancouver. It’s messy and complicated. As an aside Quinn saying he wants to play with his brothers is not some sort of rejection of Vancouver. Two years is a long time in sports. Hard to know where either team will be at that point.

I may be of a different opinion of other Devil fans, but I'm willing to entertain paying a bit more to get an extra two years of Hughes on a good contract, in his peak years, especially with only one more confirmed year of Markstrom. I think Quinn is that good and with Nico, Bratt, Jack, Timo, Luke, Quinn and Markstrom, the team would have a solid chance at the cup. I would try to add at least one more top 6 winger.

Nemec, any prospect not named Yegorov, Mercer, Hamilton, and any draft pick would be on the table for me. Now I wouldnt trade more than one top five prospect, but I would do something like Nemec, Mercer and a 1st. Maybe if we throw in Palat or Hamilton, I'd throw in a 2nd as well.

Luke is 6'2", 200 and 21 yrs old.

“That’s actually about the cost” then suggests removing the negative asset for a Selke level player. Almost like those are wildly different costs

I don’t think this is all that different from most of us. Nemec+Mercer+1st I imagine is the base most Devils would want to operate from. Then work out the rest from there.

I doubt either Palat or Dougie is waiving to go to Vancouver. I also think Palat would cost a 1st to dump rather than a 2nd. I really have no clue what we’re doing with him this summer. Such a stupid f***ing contract from the moment it was signed. A buyout doesn’t really help that much. Only ~2.5 in savings and then you have to use that to replace him anyway. In the fantasy reality that Vancouver moved Quinn this summer I think involving a 3rd team that takes on Dougie and maybe even Vancouver retains half and we toss something to help make that happen makes sense.

Gaming out that whole type of fantasy reality with a Nemec+Mercer+1st type deal, getting out of Dougie’s whole deal, and Luke at 9 mil we’d have just over 8 mil. The D would be filled out. Forwards obviously need a lot of work. Bring back Glass for like 2 mil or something. I think you’d be able to dump Haula for not much cost at all. I’d like to do that and upgrade on the 3C. Buyout Palat as well and you have just under 12. I’d like something like Palms+Suter for a combined 9 mil. At that point you have just under 3 for what I’d see as needs to get the forward group being as great as I'd like it to be another middle 6er and a 4th liner.

I probably still wouldn’t love the forwards but Suter+Palms+Grits is certainly an upgrade over Palat+Haula+Mercer. I’d honestly probably try and give Casey some forward runway as he’d be locked out as the 7D. The Dillon deals another contract that was so bad from the moment it was signed and would be coming back to bite us. Having some random league min 7D and another ~3.3 to spend would give us the ability to really bolster that forward group to being elite and the D would still be elite with easily the best left side in the league of Quinn/Luke/Siegs and a respectable right side of Kovy/Pesce/Casey

And he’s slim just like his brothers. Their mom is a tiny person. Small bones. The three boys are great talents, but they are all light boned. Luke has been off with injury a lot too.
I keep seeing this but he played 82 games last year and 71 this year. He's had 1 training related injury and missed a couple games after the playoff spot was locked up and suddenly he's "injury prone"
