Proposal: Vancouver-New Jersey

You just told me JR didn't say he wanted to play with his brothers when he said it almost verbatim.
What’s the context though? Ask yourself? He indicated to the team he wanted to play with his brothers at the 4 Nations. Do you think he’s told management he wants out of Vancouver and wants to play with his brother’s asap? Or is it more likely JR is just being honest that if they can’t turn things around in Vancouver, him playing with his brothers is the most logical fit?

No he didn’t. He said money might not be the deciding factor and that he has asked to play with his brothers in the past, referencing the 4 Nations. He also said how the team performs will play a part in his decision. Nothing Rutherford said is news to anyone. If they don’t perform well as a team, he won’t be sticking around. But assuming it’s a forgone conclusion he’s gone to New Jersey is silly.
He made no reference to 4 Nations at all. He was discussing Quinn's future with Vancouver.

Yes the Devils will be able to afford that.

Not sure how with commitments to Hamilton for a year and then Hischier also needing a significant raise, as well as Luke Hughes needing paid. Going to be borderline impossible to fill in the bottom half of the lineup competitively and make any moves outside of deadline deals.

"It may not boil down to money for him. He's said before, he wants to play with his brothers," says Rutherford about Quinn Hughes.

Do you want him to come out and say he would like to be in an environment where he has a better supporting cast?

I'm sure that he would love to play with his brothers. It's a storybook situation. But the fact of the matter is, if a Vegas, Dallas, someone else ponied up the assets and was in a similar situation to win, 3-4m a year over an 8 year contract is alot of money to leave on the table to play with your brothers. Heck 16m over 8 years which is the difference between 13m and 15m AAV is alot to leave on the table to play with your brothers.

New Jersey may be best situated to pull of a deal in the short term due to the stacking of assets they've done as of late. But I wouldn't say by any means Vancouver has no leverage so they should take this deal and he's definitely going to sign with New Jersey if they don't want to pony up assets so nobody else will go after him. Every team in the league would be willing to pony up a king's ransom to bring in Quinn Hughes from Chicago/San Jose to Vegas/Florida. He's a game breaker teams will tear apart part of their core to get him and be prepared to offer him alot of money in the process afterwards, similar to the Matthew Tkachuk situation in order to win and they're not necessarily wrong for doing so.

Luke didn't play at the 4 Nations, so we know JR wasn't referring to that.

My bad. I guess he must’ve already told management he’s gone then.
What if he did? Do you think they should attempt to convince him otherwise or move on and look forward?

Well never know the conversation behind the scenes

That’s not arrogance at all. Vancouver has no reason to trade Quinn to New Jersey without getting back something of value.
The Devils have a full pipeline of good young defenseman. We already have a Luke Hughes and Seamus Casey. Obviously Quinn would be a big upgrade and makes us better now, but we really don't need him, we're pretty well positioned to be competitive for the next 5-10 years. We can't be trading our Selke nominated captain or our elite 2 way winger for a guy who may very well sign here as a UFA.

There really isn't a scenario where we include either in a trade to Vancouver, and thinking otherwise is the epitome of arrogance.

We have plenty of valuable assets available that aren't Nico and Bratt. If none of them interest you, we'll just wait for him to come play here for free.

What am I denying? Show me where Quinn has said he’s going to New Jersey and there’s no alternative? Sure, “if he reaches UFA status” I guess.
"This franchise cannot afford to lose a guy like Quinn Hughes and we will do everything we can to keep him here."

He knows there is a possibility that Quinn would sign in NJ to play with his brothers at the end of his contract.

Everyone knows that. The question is, he going to sign an extension with Vancouver first.

If Quinn has indicated there’s zero chance he’s staying, I trade him now and rebuild. But I doubt he actually has and doing what management is apparently looking to do, create the best team possible to try to convince him to stay, is what I would do.
I seriously doubt that Quinn has said that too. He seems like a genuinely loyal guy and it would be really tough for him to leave the team that drafted him and made him Captain.

There’s a very easy way to fix the wanting to play with his brothers thing. It’s money and a contending team. Any contending team would pay out of their nose to add Hughes.
Exactly plus a good hockey market. There’s even a small chance the brothers come to you in the future. Especially depending on the contract that Luke signs. If Dallas loses to Colorado for example I could see interest from them. As they are win now mode and have a lower tax bracket which makes it easier for the brothers to take a bit less and play together in the future

No but there’s plenty of insinuation from Devils fans that the team will just sign him when he becomes a UFA and not if.
Probably because that's what's going to happen, everything points to it, the brothers are extremely close and have stated they want to play together, the Devils would be nuts to not go after him and I have no doubt he's on their radar. So yeah, if he reaches UFA it's most certain he'll be a New Jersey Devil.

It's unfortunate for Canucks fans as I know their frustration well (Scott Niedemeyer) but brothers are brothers.

I agree, if Quinn reaches UFA status, he’s going to New Jersey. But we’re not there yet. Check back in a year.

My only take (and one based entirely on my opinion) is I could see Quinn and the boys wanting to have that time together, playing and living, before they begin their future families

The boys live together in the offseason already

In reality, it probably ends up with Quinn coming later on in his career. Though this could also just be me not wanting to get excited at the prospect of Quinn to NJ in 2027 lol

Erik Karlsson had 1 year remaining and returned, Norris, #3 OA pick, 2 2nds with conditions to become 1sts and a few roster players and Balcers. That’s a very easy comparison.

Nemec was a #2 OA pick, but he hasn’t exactly progressed like you’d hope for a #2 OA. Mercer has been tracking a bit backwards or stagnating since a really strong campaign. Not sure those are comparable to a #3 OA and Norris at all. Nemec is probably similar to Norris, not sure you could say the same about Mercer and the #3 OA which was Stutzle.
"#3 OA pick". It was a future first of a team expected to contend. The equivalent would be NJDs 2026 first.

This all came about because of what Rutherford said, not Quinn. Then Rutherford goes further and almost starts with tampering.

You're assigning known value to a 1st that wasn't known at the time of the trade. They didn't trade 3rd OA, they traded their 1st thinking that they were one Erik Karlsson away from a Cup. If they already knew it'd be 3rd OA they don't make that deal.

Why are we checking back in a year? You don't think there's a chance he gets dealt this summer? It's not like the Canucks are in good shape, you traded away one of your top forwards in Miller and most likely going to lose another one in Boeser, everything reeks of a rebuild process. I be shocked if Quinn wants to stick around for it.

He's not getting dealt this summer. You don't move Quinn before he rejects an extension. JR literally said they're going to do what they can to keep him. He's not going to just turn around and deal him now. If Demko's healthy and good again and EP gets back to himself then Vancouver could be good again. That could entice him to stay. Even if it doesn't the Canucks are at least going to try rather than move on from him before they get certainty. Quinn is only be moved if he outright demands to be dealt and that's not going to happen.

I disagree, if they wait a year the Devils at that point might just say why not wait another year and not have to give up valuable assets, even if next year he gets dealt to another team it's most likely going to be as a rental.

And Quinn doesn't have to outright demand to be dealt, all the Canucks FO needs to know he's not signing an extension, why would they wait?
