How about something like this from the sens (although i assume we're on his NTC list)?

Anton Forsberg, G (1 year $2.75M)

for

Ilya Mikheyev (4.75M 2 years)
Nikita Tolopilo, G (950k, 1 year, then RFA)
Vancouver should take that and run, unless they think Tolopilo has legit starter potential.

Same injury that Roussel got and after Roussel got it, he went from being an average 3rd liner to being a guy who had zero pace and couldn’t hang in the NHL.

Weird season for Mikheyev. He was very high in the league in ES goals for his first 30 or so games. Then never scored again.

I genuinely think he’s a good candidate for a rebuilding team. Maybe another offseason and he gets the pace back and you can flip him. Worst case is that he’s defensively responsible anywhere up and down your lineup.

Mikheyev to the Pens for Reilly Smith.

Smith makes a little more, but has one less year. Mikh has the higher upside to become what he was for us last year. Change of scenery for both.

Holy shit how did he get that contract?

If I recall the Canucks were desperate for pk help at the time. I'm guessing they envisioned him as a utility guy who can play up and down the lineup that would give the pk an immediate boost.

The cost of doing business on July 1 is high, and based on his contract, I'm guessing there was other competition for his services.

It's a carryover contract from the old regime.

Mikheyev wasn’t terrible last year playing through a knee injury that required surgery in January. He came into this season without being able to train properly and his biggest asset, his speed, has regressed because of that. With a full offseason of training he could regain some of his prior ability, but the Canucks now don’t have the luxury to take that chance, they need to re-invest some of that cap into a sure fire upgrade to play in the top 6.

At $2M~ he’s probably a good gamble for some team.

How does this help Ottawa?
Here's my thinking.

First, it's better to have cap tied up in an overpaid mikheyev contributing on our 3rd line and PK than have cap tied up in a goalie we won't/shouldn't even play. And maybe mikheyev rebounds in a new role.

Mikheyev's $2M overpayment offsets Forsberg's $2M overpayment in year 1 but unlike forsberg ilya can contribute on the ice (to some extent) game in and game out.

Mikheyev replaces kubaliks spot in the top 9, so it fills a gap. Capwise, this move increases our cap by about 2.5M in year 1, and I doubt we'd get a better player via UFA than Mikheyev for that price.

So year 1 I think it's a good move for the sens. Year 2 we'd have to hope for a bit of a rebound on Mikheyev, but we're adding another controlled goalie future into the mix partly as compensation for that risk.

Unfortunately, no it isn't.

The current regime signed it. You are correct though, we were desperate for PK help. Mikheyev also got injured last season which played a huge factor in his decline offensively since he's completely reliant on his speed to do anything.

It was definitely an overpayment at the time but not nearly as bad as it looks now.

I think you're hoping too much for a rebound because he was useless with Elias Pettersson this year. Better just to trade Forsberg for literally anything and use the cap space for a top 4 D or an improvement on the 3rd line because Mikhayev over Kubalik is a lateral move at best, not to mention having him on the books for an additional year.

We'll see i guess. I bet he does bounce back decently though and i think hes an upgrade on kubalik (who i dont believe is even an NHL player at this point).

I cant imagine any trade for forsberg happening unless it involves taking some equally bad cap back or retaining on him. There is just no market for bad goalies. This isn't about targetting mikheyev as a player.

I'm just looking for a realistic problem swap that benefits both teams.

Waiver/Buyout

Nobody wants either player but Forsberg can be a goalie on a bad team who just needs to get through a season or be bought out. Mikhayev is not an NHL player at this point and does not belong on a scoring or a checking line.

Would prefer a trade but could live with a buyout if it means being able to keep an important piece like Lindholm, Zadorov or Joshua

The additional dead cap on the books running concurrently with the highest penalty of the OEL buyout is less than ideal though. Best case scenario we are replacing some guys with ELC players by that point.

If he did get bought out, I wouldn't offer him much as a UFA. A speedy PK specialist is all he is now, and that shouldn't get more than 1 or 1.5 million on the open market.

Even for a million, there's probably a few other reclamation projects out there I'd rather give the roster spot to.

Looked OK to begin the contract but has never been the same since he blew out his ACL. He never had the greatest hands to begin with but during the time off seems to have forgotten how to use them at all.

Don’t do that! Just trade him to Detroit for Copp.

This is kind of the problem that might lead to a buyout. As much as Vancouver don't need to pile even more dead cap on the heap...i don't know that they have the assets they can afford to spend to "cap dump" him to the Sharks or Blackhawks or whatever. They've spent a ton of futures on other cap dumps and/or deadline adds and didn't have an absolutely overflowing prospect pipeline to begin with. Need cheap young contributors like that on top of dumping someone like Mikheyev's salary.

I wouldn't even totally hang up the phone if there was discussion of retention or something to balance Mikheyev's salary with Copp. At that point, i like that Copp has a little more grit and that C/W utility (though it'd basically guarantee Lindholm walks - which is looking more and more likely anyway).

But i still don't love the idea either. Even at even salary. It'd kind of just be slapping some different lipstick on the same problem.

So either way...it's either spending assets the Canucks can't afford to properly dump him...buying him out...or swapping him for someone else's cap mistake instead. Wouldn't take that last option off the table, but it'd depend on how a lot of other things go...for me to look really seriously at something like that.

As frustrating as Mihkeyev's lack of finish is...i don't think Copp is any better, nor does he have the same speed really. On an already slow team.

If he's bought out, somebody is going to get Mikheyev for cheap and be very happy with him.

From the 32 thoughts podcast, while Friedman did not say they were absolutely going to buyout Mikyehev, he did say they were looking at it.

If they do buy him out I hope Treliving is in on this player if for no no other reason then our PK needs a lot of help, when he was here last he was a quality PK forward and our OK last year was dog shit.

Bring back Soup.
