Vancouver Canucks-Ottawa Senators

To :sens

Brandon Sutter (zero retention)
Erik Gudbranson (zero retention)
2020 1st (next years 1st.....not this years).

To :nucks

???? (No cap dumps. Players on ELC’s or bridge’s are welcome).

Why the Sens do this:

1) Ensure that they reach the cap floor
2) Regardless of where the Canucks finish after the 2019/2020 season, the Sens get a 1st round pick out of it.

Why the Canucks do this:

1) Get rid of bad contracts.
2) the departure of Sutter allows Gaudette to crack the line-up
3) the departure of a few bad contracts can allow the Canucks to not only comfortably re-up their upcoming RFA’s, but to also possibly go after a high ticket UFA on July 1st.

Judging off past capdump type trades, unless you can guarantee a top 10 pick that's not enough with Sutter being owed 9mil and Gudbranson being owed 7.5mil, Sutter would be challenging Smith for the 3rd/4th C spot and Gudbranson is probably our 4th/5th best dman depending which Codi Ceci shows up that night.

Sutter and Gudbranson would be decent pickups for Ottawa but got to think the Canucks would want something back more than is listed in the OP.

Given that all of Stone, Duchene, Dzingel, Ceci, Anderson, Pageau, Boedker, MacArthur and Condon will likely be elsewhere by the end of next season, I think the Sens would easily do this

That’s why I put ????? for the Canucks.

Yes - getting a 2020 1st would be great for Ottawa, but the contracts of Sutter and Gudbranson hold negative values.

If the Canucks are asking Ottawa to take on both contracts in its entirety (with the sweetener being that they take our 2020 1st), then I’m not sure what the Canucks could ask in return.

Ben Harpur + 3rd on the low end, Tierney on the high end

Cant see us giving much more than that

I’d honestly be cool with that. Getting rid of Sutter and Gudbranson with zero retention is a huge win for the Canucks. It allows the Canucks to comfortably reup their upcoming RFA core, while also giving us some options in this years’ UFA market.

I don’t think Sutter and Gudbranson hold as negative value as some people may think. I’m not saying we should expect a return, but for a RHD and tough minutes center in their prime years of play we shouldn’t have to pay to get rid of them. Their contracts aren’t that outlandish.

We have plenty enough $ to re-sign Boeser in the offseason and will have money to sign Pettersson when that comes up. If Benning isn't stupid and keeps the spending to a minimum we'll be perfectly fine with the 28.7 M available + any rise in the cap.

Sutter and Gudbranson are UFAs the year Pettersson is a RFA and Eriksson will have one more year left after that. Gagner and Schaller will be UFAs at the of end of next season and free up more $, so really we have no reason to trade a first nor should we with where this team is(not near contending).

There's no way I'm giving away first round picks(especially in what is supposed to be an extraordinarily deep draft class) to get rid of contracts, we're not in cap hell, yes they're bad contracts, but we've got plenty of room to re-sign all our important players in the next couple of years as well as compete for top UFA's

The sens will not have trouble hitting the cap floor, provided none of their current big 3 resign with them. Taking on a handful of players with high cap hits with little cash left and there's still guys like Clarkson and hortons contracts out there to be paid to pick up.

I could see Ottawa taking on both these contracts. A deal could probably be worked out without Vancouver's 1st

It’s been reported on multiple occasions that the Canucks have turned down offers for both players.

If teams are willing to offer assets, why would the Canucks give up a 1st to be rid of them?

Benning just has to decide to trade them.

This offer imo is an absolute joke.
Gudbranson and sutter arent even close to that bad where we need to throw a 1st to get rid of them. Nucks are also nowhere close to a cap crunch to force us to do this.

Guddy definitely has positive value. Sutter imo has 0 value, but defnitely not negative value.thesw guys arent on like 5-6 yr deals left with like 6+mil salary.

Just terrible value in this trade

Gudbranson has close to zero value

Every report says the contrary. I don't see it, I don't get it, but someone has interest every time his name is mentioned.

It could be an offer of a fifth, but according to our fan base when we trade one, it's a high price apparently.

That’s good cuz we’re not offering our 1st round pick to get rid of a couple of contracts

Wtf?!? I can’t actually believe the OP is a nucks fan with his trade proposals

I mean I know it won't change our dipstick's mind but what kind of deal would you envision?
I dont know but with Ceci reportedly on his way out I could see Dorion having interest in Gudbranson. Maybe send Zack Smith the other way.

Sutter/Gudbranson/2nd for 3rd could work, something along those lines. That is under the assumption that Gudbranson has around a 2nd rounder value which is not quite enough to get Sutters contract off the books. Swapping your 2nd for a 3rd (would be Pitts 3rd in 2020 or ours in 2021, or a 2019 that we acquire between now and when we make this hypothetical deal) adds enough value imo to get it done. If I am overvaluing Gudbranson (relative to how GMs value him) then maybe adjust that a bit - like, say, drop the Sens pick to a 5th or something

I dont know but with Ceci reportedly on his way out I could see Dorion having interest in Gudbranson. Maybe send Zack Smith the other way.

This, too, I could see although I am not sure if the Nucks would be interested. Doesnt save them much money and the contracts have the same term

Melnyk barely wants to pay good players to begin with. He's not going to want to waste money on those guys even for a first.
