When it seems like Pettersson has mailed it in and Quinn Hughes, the captain, wants out to play with his bros - heres my proposal:

Devils get:

Quinn Hughes 7.85M UFA 2027

Canucks get:

Simon Nemec 0.918M RFA 2026

Ondrej Palat 6M UFA 2027 for cap-reasons

Casey Seamus 0.95M RFA 2027

1st 2026

Devils get a Norris-caliber 1D to play with his brothers and he will very likely resign there after 2027. Canucks get 2 very good young defencemen in Nemec and Seamus + a 1st to rebuild the team properly.

Vancouver get:

Patrick Laine 8.7M UFA 2027

Kirby Dach 3.36M UFA 2026

Canadiens 1st 2025

Canadiens 1st 2026

Montreal get:

Elias Pettersson 11.6M UFA 2032

Montreal get their 1-2 punch at C and hope EP rebuilds his career. Vancouver get rid of a guy, that does seem disinterested playing there. Canucks also get 2x 1st:s for their rebuild after their best player and captain also seem to want to leave.Dach could become a serviceable 3C. Laine is in for cap reasons.

Thoughts?

Devs say yes but I think they ask for more, and probably should.
Palat will be an issue- No Move Clause; Modified No Trade -- commencing July 1, 2025 -- 10 team trade list
He won't go to a rebuilding team.

The first trade is what we expect to see, though I agree it will likely be a little more than that from New Jersey. Maybe a young forward like Mercer will be involved.

The second trade is like a Canucks dream at this point. They will have a much harder time moving Pettersson's contract. I can't imagine any team taking him unless you can swap him for a similarly lazy player signed into the 2030s.

It kinda lower any players value, if he wants to be traded to only one team. Hughes should be worth more, but if NJ is his only destination, then it lowers it.

In what world is the $11.6m heartless wonder worth 2 1st round picks ++.
Id be betting he isnt comfortable in Vancouver? The "Miller issue" and his lackluster play. In another surrounding he could be a 100p player again. Habs have a young core and atleast age-wise he fits. They also have cap and need of a C. IMO EP is just not comfortable in Vancouver and he will probably rebound somewhere else.

Possibly. Or he'll be an $11.6m albatross for the next 7 years. There seems to be a lot of issues with his character and his commitment to the game. Giving up 2 1sts ++ for a guy with that many red flags is lunacy. When somebody repeatedly tells you who they are, believe them.

Well, its a gamble. Habs have the space and the need. If he actually starts to compete again, Habs has a 1-1C combo for years.
Its not like you get a 1C for cap-dump, cap-dump, 3rd and 4th

Thoughts?
Palat is a salary dump, van dont want him

Heres a realistic one

To NJD:
Quinn Hughes

To Van:
2026 1st
2025 2nd
Nemec
Casey
Mercer

You have to remember youre talking about a norris defenseman. And yes, hes likely to sign with NJD in 2027 UFA withour giving up assets but it doesnt mean he will be given away. They can trade him to someone else and theyll pay just as much as the above to have him for 2 years

Habs pass, don't want to build on Pettersson.

Yeah, realistic if Hughes want the one who wants out. When he has decided to bolt, that lowers his value A LOT. Then even more, when he targets only 1 team.

No they wont, when Hughes targets only 1 team. No team in hell pay that much for a guy that dont want to come there and is sure to walk after 2 seasons.

Patrick Laine is UFA in 2026 and Dach is RFA the same year.

As a Habs fan I would probably do this but I would ask for a bit a retention on EP40 salary. Maybe 1-1,5 M$ per year.

Habs are not gambling away these assets and cap space on a question mark. Pettersson is almost immovable at this point.
Suggesting Laine and Dach dont fetch EP? Thats the price they pay + 2 1st:s. Canadiens dont need the picks, they have enough young players. They need a 1A-1B center and EP is that. If he gets his head straight, then Habs have arguable the best 1-2 punch in the league

That isnt....

NJ just waits to sign him

He gas just 3 yrd left which lowers hus value into rental prices.

While the Habs would certainly be in the market for a 2C, I don't think EP is what they'll be looking for due to his large salary and big asking price from Van.
