Confirmed with Link: Vanacek to Florida Panthers for Giles

Rich people are the cheapest people on the planet. They don't get rich by being less than absolutely tight-fistedly obsessive about their money.
Completely wrong. Hasso bought a golf course that wasn't for sale and paid a premium for it. He has also got the Sharks their own private jet to carry them. Expensive upgrades at the tank as well as the training facility. He brought the Barracuda here because it is best for player development to be near the NHL club. He could probably make more in a smaller city without another hockey team to compete with the crowd. He got more scouts for the team than they had before. Some of this is showing in the Sharks prospect depth. Further, he has always spent to the cap when the Sharks can actually make a playoff run.

Finally, he could relocate the Sharks or buy another franchise if he just wanted more money.

It's even less likely he'd re-sign while taking a $500k a year pay cut while the cap has gone up $13M+ since he signed his current deal.

He or someone else also mentioned how he chips in offense well, so seemed pertinent.
He's also turning 30 this season vs when he was 27 signing with us.

He does chip in offensively, but no one is gonna look at his 7 goals and be like "that's merely a product of luck"

It's one more year at the league minimum. Pretty much the least "multiple years left on the deal" that it can possibly be without being a FA at season's end.

If this somehow impacts anything else the Sharks want to do in a negative way then we have bigger problems.

as for the trade itself, meh. Vanacek likely had little to no value thanks to his injury and not great work with the Sharks. I'd guess this is more about doing a solid for a veteran while opening up the opportunity for Askarov to get some more run with the Sharks unless they plan on taking on another goalie in the next couple of days.

Giles himself feels like a nothing-burger crossed with depth insurance if Grier finds a taker for more than a couple of our bottom 6 pieces. Kunin and Sturm might be attractive and open up slots for Cardwell and some wild-card call up (Duerr? Bystedt?) then having someone like Giles who at least has gotten NHL games before isn't the worst thing in the world.

Right now the only real value Giles has is potentially as an opportunity for gifs. From Buffy the Vampire Slayer or, if you're feeling particularly literary, The Crucible.
You could also delve into any Chevy Chase memes you may feel worthwhile since that's where he was born.

My sense is Grier brought in Giles because he will be moving others like Sturm, Grundstrom or Dellandrea.

Solomon Grundstrom disagrees
