They can get by without a "real" 2C if they're able to nab a star winger to drive that 2nd line.
Why not keep Boeser as a self rental then? If EP returns to form, you got to believe DeBrusk to be that 35 goal guy on his wing, Boeser will have to forge chemistry with Chytil along with Joshua or another more physical winger, I cannot imagine Hog, Lekk or Garland with Boeser Chytil now that Miller's physical dimension is gone.

MOAARRR SWEEEEDDESS

We should spend our other 1st on another 2nd liner Swede at the apex of his career earning potential and that same apex of his career

What could go wrong Nazzy Oliver Ekman Eriksson
Rakell? He's besties with Pettersson the 3rd.

Rackell sounds perfect......Boeser to NJ for a 1st and then send that 1st for Rackell.

Still have room to go get William Karlsson with our other 1st

Bammm look out here we come ......contender

I agree Boeser for nylander does sound pretty good

This team needed a defenseman immediately so it is what it is.

The fact they are one point out of WC and 2 points out of third in the division 50 games in with the D they have iced this season is amazing.
There are a lot of contending teams wanting a top-four defenseman. A 1st was going to be the market price. Standard fare. It's not really surprising. They also got DOC who I like and have talked about before.
I think it was pretty evident the d corps was untenable by late November. Could've flipped our own 1st for Petterson by December if mgmt was that desperate.
This is my biggest problem with the deal. Why did they wait until game 50 or whatever to make it? Everyone knew they needed to add another top-four defenseman. PIT has been signalling they're in sell mode the entire year. Marcus Pettersson is a JR guy. It was inevitable he was going to land in Vancouver. What took so long? They could have flipped their own 1st for him at any time (and I would have much preferred they traded their own 1st in this deal than the Rangers' - I will laugh when they've gifted McKenna to the Pens).

Sounds like Dubas was asking for Willander or Lekk + who knows what for him early on.

Unlikely. If that's what Dubas wanted, I'd doubt he would just randomly accept a lower price now that the Canucks are in an even worse position and with so many teams looking for a defenseman at the deadline.

I don’t think Pettersson was available in the off-season. Once the Penguins had that awful start and fell into a deep hole, then he became trade bait.

Going by Allvin’s comments, and looking at who actually moved in the offseason, there just wasn’t much available. Now that’s not a great excuse given how much the defence screwed the team this season.

I mean in-season. Once the Pens had a bad start, it was very obvious they were going to be in sell-mode. And they started selling almost immediately.

They could have made the (IMO seemingly inevitable) Pettersson deal a lot earlier and potentially saved themselves a lot of drama. They did not.

Yeah, not sure why this was timed the way it was. For all we know the Penguins wanted a higher pick and the Rangers 1st satisfied that while the Canucks’ wouldn’t have.

GMs can be dumb. In this case, maybe all 3 GMs were being dumb in different ways.

Additionally, all three teams have weird ownerships that like to meddle. I think the Canucks have the most autonomy of the three but we’ve heard rumblings about how Drury and Dubas don’t have the final say.

Im ok with trading 1st rounders for players under contract. (JT miller, Garland, OEL, Hronek) Not a fan of flippin 1st rounders for rentals, (Lindholm, Pettersson) Lets hope we at least sign Pettersson.

Better version of the OEL trade?

people nagging on the Canucks trade acting like the Rangers 1st rounder is a top 5, like wtf, people.

Now who do they target with their 1st? They need another 2C.
we might have to approach UFA this. Might not be one for trade.

It may have been that the Canucks didn’t want to part with their own first when they were playing so poorly and the wheels could fall off (for this year and next). Nothing looks worse on a GM than when you trade your own first and it’s ends up a top lottery pick. It’s the kind of thing that gets you fired.

I think if the Canucks had been playing well all season they may have pulled the trigger.

1. That's dumb logic from JR/Allvin then.

2. They may have done that anyway, in a more substantial draft class (McKenna at the top).

3. By JR's own admission on his self-aggrandizing media tour, he doesn't think the team is playing well right now either. So if he doesn't think the team is good, why make the trade now then?

Team very rarely trade their first in the fall for a UFA when they are not playing well.

Yes, that is technically true. But they essentially traded Miller for Pettersson, O’Connor, Chytil anf O’Connor. This was effectively a three way deal, and the Canucks never gave up any futures other than Fenstrom.

Again, you are focusing on the trade of the NYR first round pick when it was a de facto three way trade and the Canucks never really had the first. To put it another way, I don’t think the Canucks do the NYR trade without the Pittsburg one.

It's probably way more likely that the Rangers win a couple of playoff rounds (either this year or next year) and bring the pick down to ~28th than that pick being in the top 5.

I don't feel terrific about the value but even if they miss the playoffs badly this year they're going to go all-in to make the playoffs next year.

I didn't like the trade with NY, and never like to see 1st rd traded. I am old enough to remember that in past. However, Alvin, has essentially remade the d-corp if they resign M. Pettersson. Outside of Walander there isn't much the pipeline, so that part I like, If they an flip Boeser for a decent pick or solid prospect all the better. This team still needs a lot of work and some luck with prospects in Abby.
