This will never not be hilarious to me. Our local media was so far hands off in this and it was the national media that dragged it to the forefront. And then our own front office who joined in keeping it there.

But damn Jeff Paterson to hell, may he take Thomas, Patrick, Harman, and IRF with him. And don't even get me started on that scoundrel, Iain Macintyre.
:laugh:you just quoted all the guys on payroll. there are others

Few random thoughts after digesting most of this:

Losing Miller hurts in a lot of ways, especially in our forward depth, but getting a solid D who can move the puck when Hughes/Hronek aren’t on the ice instantly makes all our forwards a lot more effective.

JR signed MP to his last contract so he should have a decent idea of his wants and priorities are and probably wouldn’t have traded for him if those aren’t available in Vancity. I’d like to think that going from an older and declining team to a decent contender should appeal to him.

With Miller gone, all our key players are in their prime 24-30 years so any talk of holding onto the NYR pick to draft a mid prospect in six (or eighteen) months to get a player 3-4 years away is ridiculous. Whether the top players like Pettersson, Demko, and Chytil can get back to their previous levels and stay healthy is another debate but at this point you have to take that risk.

Heinen was mostly underwhelming and Deharnais was straight up bad, clearing their salaries opens up a lot of options even if this season does end up going even further off the rails.

Like who.

And payroll. You buy into the tin foil hat school of thought that @theguardianII champions?
I can think of many, but I will name just one. Dhaliwhal. In my opinion, Canucks suffer from overexposure. All the organisational weaknesses are played on the PA on repeat nonstop. Yes, national media doesn't help, but they feed off each other. Now with AI articles regurgitating information and spinning it slightly with algorithms online, its a cacophony of lingering phony information that centers around a real locker room problem like this one.

Its Noise.

That noise actually affect the team negatively.

But my post wasnt really about the media, it just played a part in this dissappointing turn of events. Its 80% the two players in the center of this thing.

Guentzel last year didn’t get a first round pick. A part of me thinks Canucks were just too panicky to make a trade to salvage this season, but at the end of the day this isn’t a team that can win the Stanley cup even if they squeak into he playoffs. It’s just such a shortsighted maneuver. Canucks don’t need multiple first round picks, but Canucks also didn’t need to overpay.

But what is he worth? With the new cap projections (which I find difficult to believe will be accurate in 2 years time) what is a reasonable contract for him? I'd probably be ok with a 6x5.5 or maybe 6x6...but if he gets more than that its value is diminishing in a hurry.
He's developed into a more complete player but IMHO, he got overpaid on his last contract (due to how Jethro Bodine structured his deal prior to that one).

This team needed a defenseman immediately so it is what it is.

The fact they are one point out of WC and 2 points out of third in the division 50 games in with the D they have iced this season is amazing.

I think it was pretty evident the d corps was untenable by late November. Could've flipped our own 1st for Petterson by December if mgmt was that desperate.

I think the current cap landscape is really different compared to last season. A lot of teams have cap compared to last season and that reduced the value.

Guentzel was a weird one because Dubas ridiculously over-valued Michael Bunting who he had a history with going back to junior.

" So Miller, Heinen, Desharnais, Brannstrom, Fernstrom, and Dorrington for Pettersson, Chytil, O’Connor and Mancini.

Dorrington is a low-end prospect filler so let’s take him out. Brannstrom had already been waived. Heinen and Desharnais are depth bodies each with an additional year. I don’t view them as heavily negative assets but I do view their “loss” as flexibility creators.

Mancini and Fernstrom are both solid prospects. Mancini will help more immediately but Fernstrom is a guy to watch down the road…as I said before he’s still 18 and an SHL regular which is trending up for a guy who just got picked in the 3rd round. But let’s call that a wash form a pure asset value standpoint.

The meat of the deal in total is Miller for Pettersson, Chytil and O’Connor - with a presumption that some of the cap flexibility created will be used to help resign Pettersson (and maybe O’Connor).

So that’s an ultra solid #3 type defenseman with great size, a talented but often injured middle six center who has some theoretical top six upside and an interesting third line winger who occasionally can pop in a more middle six role for a very talented (and unhappy) first line star forward with a bajillion years left on his deal (albeit at a good AAV). "

I like this summary. Seems positive and realistic about the deals. Losing Miller hurts for sure, but seemed like it had to happen, which from a GMs position is at a clear disadvantage in the trades. So my initial feeling is Allvin did a good job with the circumstance

Not sure will ever hear the details of what exactly happend with Miller in the locker room, or if we do will be when these guys are all retired. I dont wish him any bad luck cause dont really know what happend and if he was wrong or not

I
He also waited too long to make the trade and the outer suitors went elsewhere and had no cap space.
The Penguins easily could have got a first plus for Guentzel. They went for a more win now player in Bunting, and more win now prospects that were more likely to contribute while Crosby is playing.

Different market. You can probably count on one hand the number of legit top-4 defenseman available as trade bait while there's 32 teams all equally trying to trade for a top-4.

The fact that the Rangers were able to trade Jacob Trouba, with NO retention, AND got a pick back, shows you just how desperate teams are for top-4 help.

The value for Pettersson from day one started with a 1st.

I like Marcus Pettersson and I think he'll be a great partner for Hronek or Willander.

I'm sure they'll have him signed to an extension. 6x $5.5M is my guess.

Now who do they target with their 1st? They need another 2C.

Force Chytil on second line until it works

They can get by without a "real" 2C if they're able to nab a star winger to drive that 2nd line.
