Small part of this, but I think they gave up too quickly on Heinen.

He was on pace for 29 points. The frustrating part for him is that he was in the right spot at the right time, but couldn't seize opportunities. That's a player I keep. Rather than Desharnhais, who was constantly making errors and couldn't keep up with the play.

Question is: What does $2m AAV buy you next offseason? (Not much, I think)

" So Miller, Heinen, Desharnais, Brannstrom, Fernstrom, and Dorrington for Pettersson, Chytil, O’Connor and Mancini.

Dorrington is a low-end prospect filler so let’s take him out. Brannstrom had already been waived. Heinen and Desharnais are depth bodies each with an additional year. I don’t view them as heavily negative assets but I do view their “loss” as flexibility creators.

Mancini and Fernstrom are both solid prospects. Mancini will help more immediately but Fernstrom is a guy to watch down the road…as I said before he’s still 18 and an SHL regular which is trending up for a guy who just got picked in the 3rd round. But let’s call that a wash form a pure asset value standpoint.

The meat of the deal in total is Miller for Pettersson, Chytil and O’Connor - with a presumption that some of the cap flexibility created will be used to help resign Pettersson (and maybe O’Connor).

So that’s an ultra solid #3 type defenseman with great size, a talented but often injured middle six center who has some theoretical top six upside and an interesting third line winger who occasionally can pop in a more middle six role for a very talented (and unhappy) first line star forward with a bajillion years left on his deal (albeit at a good AAV). "

We got a lot better on D today and jettisoned a lot of driftwood. Losing Miller is a tough pill to swallow, but I'd rather he went than EP. This might just be a team that competes for a wild card spot or even 3rd place. I don't mind flipping that 1st if MP re-signs here.

Dunno, he had 50 games to show something and didn't. Being in the right position is fine but 2.25m is a bit rich for a guy with no skills that "pop".

I think the two generational players had a lot to with the 2 cups.

Same crowd that says Mike Sullivan did it too.
An yet you've won f*** all since 2009 to when he arrived with a those 2 generational players. You guys are stuck now because you refuse to rebuild. Your only joy is to watch Crobsy pad some stats instead of trading him while you can still get value.

They are definitely trying to contend this year. If the Canucks don't contend then Hughes walks, this is to stop that.

Selling or re-tooling isn't an option.
Yep.

They chose a INSANELY narrow path to try to walk when they pushed straight ahead when they got there instead of taking a year or two to step back and accumulate assets.

Who has 'pop' in this black hole of a system? The famed JT Miller had 9 goals!

29~ points here (1st cohort 3rd line production) is like 40+ points elsewhere. Besides, the $2.25m freed up in a $95.5m cap will not buy them much.

I think that was the selling feature to Cam Neely when he signed him... He wanted that type of player.

Can he though? I haven't watched a ton of the Penguins but the main complaint about Petterson is that's bad at moving the puck. Not sure what to make of this trade but a top 4 LD was obviously needed and I guess he was one of the few available. I'll reserve judgement until I watch him as a Canuck. O'Connor is an underrated pickup here who may end up being the most valuable piece imo.

Who’s making this complaint? even this down year for him, I’ve watched a reasonable mobile dude

You’ve got a top player on a very cheap deal.

That’s not down the road, that’s right now.

What a colossal failure from management.

You choose Miller over Horvat and then punt Miller after weakening your position.

You completely pooch the defense.

Your top forward now is a skinny gamer crybaby making 11.6 for 60pts while falling down every shift.

A 100pt #1C is now a 7 concussions 3C whos best year is 45pts

And then you top it off wasting the 1st on a UFA #4D who will get overpaid after you just sunk your playoff hopes.

The team is worse soft as butter and not a single top end player has come back from Horvat and now Miller

Boeser and Tocchet are as good as gone.

Anyone thinking we were going to tank was fool themselves. Especially if they thought Hughes would be apart of it.

I'm fine with them waiting until after the trade deadline just to see how he fits in. Otherwise, I'd like a contract done well before the playoffs. Regardless if we make it or not.
Agreed. It's a perpetual dream for someone people with this franchise, but it just won't happen with Aquaman at the helm.

Must not be the same Pettersson lmao, because it's something he's absolutely very good at doing.

Defensive metrics used to be better, but gotta wonder how much of that has to do with the team he's on.
The idea that he can’t move the puck is nonsense but he’s not some stud offensive player. Very simple game, no flair, not much physicality because he’s a beanpole. His shot isn’t very good, he’s not creative but his first pass and skating ability is where you want it to be.

I’m not sure what his problem defensively is this year but he is noticeably horrible defensively compared to the last couple seasons where he was as reliable as you could want.

I disagree that it's underwhelming.

All we've heard about this year is that every top 4 D on the market costs a 1st+, the Canucks just got the best one out there and dumped two dog shit players in the process, both of whom had term.

The intention is clearly to sign MP long term.

The hilarity is M.Petterssons agent just got the new Cap numbers and then got the Canucks with desperation to retain him after blowing the best part of the Miller trade on a UFA in a few months

Horvat was going regardless. We needed to sell high on that guy. He was getting his goals on a lot of tip-ins.

Was our Defense good before?

EP would rip 100 pts if our system wasn't shit.

Who cares, we got out of JT's contract without retention and got a 1st to flip for a 2nd pairing LD.

Generally, agents and GMs have discussion before doing something like this. He'll probably re-sign here.

We added significant size in these two deals.

We will see.
