You don't pay a mid 1st round pick to dump 4 mil in cap though.
Which is why Van will extend the player. Hughes is a phenom, of course. Hronek is the perfect partner for Hughes. Then, M. Pettersson on second pairing, where can excell.
Smart trade. Turned Miller into a middle six centre and a top four D. All while getting younger guys in their primes and clearing cap.
Pittsburgh does well too. They maximize the return for M. Pettersson by adding the Rangers’ first. Good hockey trade.

So you assign no value for MP who is probably the top FA D available July 1st? If the Canucks manage to extend him before he tests the market, this is a massive win when coupled with the 4.25M cap dump this year and next.
That's exactly what my first comment was. The Canucks need to resign MP or this trade is a disaster.

Imo Pittsburgh getting that Rangers’ first in this trade is great for them too. Best trades are ones where both clubs get what they need. This is one of those. Dubas and Allvin did good jobs here.

Sources have reported that the Canucks are working on a series of deals that would acquire former Cheers regular Norm Peterson, the rights to all film footage from former world heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson, all Family guy episodes featuring Peter's son, Chris Griffin, and the "P" sections of phone directories of Swedish cities Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmo.

Not a disaster even if not re-signing the player. Cap space has a lot of value July 1. Your point is moot though; the player will extend as there is clearly a relationship between him and Van management already.

I think there's no way that JR/Alvin let Pettersson hit UFA. They're super familiar with him, with JR being the guy who initially gave Pettersson the long term deal he's currently on. I also think it's worth pointing out that JR honored an agreement he made with Pettersson back in 2018, where Pettersson agreed to take his QO to help the Penguins with the cap in exchange for JR giving him an agreed upon long-term deal beyond that year.

They'll give him what he wants and I think their past negotiations will make Pettersson eager to re-sign.

Hughes is a Superstar
Hronek is Excellent
Myers is a good defender
Soucy is a good defender
Forbort is below average
The rest are terrible

The problems came whenever there was an injury and Dmen had to step up and play more minutes then they should’ve. Adding M. Pettersson really solidifies the D core.
Soucy has all sorts of minus lately. Forbort has ZERO minus in his last 7 games. So, who’s below average and who’s the good defender? Also Forbort is better on PK

Forbert has been a lot better than Soucy this year but neither are great (Soucy last year is better than Forbert). Forbert has zilch to his game in transition and offensively.

6'3" 28 Year old solid veteran Defenseman for Miller is what this really boils down to.
There were rumours we were interested in Pettersson but no one would have guessed that this is what it would take.
Canucks didn't value Brannstrom - this is will turn out to be a steal.
If we re-sign Pettersson this could be a win for Van if the draft pick lands heads down. Miller was let go once from the Rags for reasons. Vancouver was the only organization that was able to work with him - and they did well. Tocchet was able to get him to play defense - but I can't see any other team having the same patience.
He reminds me of Mark Crawford - his intensity will drive the team but eventually he will focus any negativity on a player and decisions will have to be made.

I agree. It’s not imposing but has solid depth. If they could pick up Cozens for their 1st I would be more impressed. With the money going out from Miller they can afford it. He’s also closer in age to Peter and Hughes.
That ship has sailed
Cozens won’t be traded for futures

Vancouver looks better on defence
Got worse on paper on offence
Not sure if the fixed their locker room divide

But they made a decision to keep EP over Milller. See how it plays out

Sneaky great moves by the Canucks.

They rid themselves of a locker room cancer. This was now the third player that Miller had been beefing with and creating turmoil within the team. Miller is on the wrong side of 30. He'll be 32 in 6 weeks and players usually start to fall off a cliff at that age. I wouldn't be surprised if in two years he's a 60 point forward.

They free up a bunch of cap space and bring back a solid #3 dman and 3 very serviceable forwards while getting rid of Heinen and a dman in Desharnais that is absolutely horrendous.

With all the cap space the Canucks have left, they easily have enough to resign M. Pettersson which will solidify their D for several years to come. They will easily have enough cap space to bring in TWO top forwards as well.

These deals didn't only make Vancouver better now, but opens up their ability to make moves/sign FAs in the future that are going to be a tremendous help next year as well.

Hughes is a franchise player
Hronek is strong, but not necessarily excellent yet.
Myers is not a good defender lmao, he's a strong skater, and a solid puckmover, who has good size, but lacks hockey IQ.
Soucy might be a good defender, but he's awful everywhere else.
Forbort is baaaaaddd.
Pettersson is a great defender, good skater, solid puckmover, and underrated offensively, actually pretty productive 5on5.

Myers is a good defender who is getting based on 3+ years ago, his game since Foote and Gonchar is night and day.

Forbort is fine, Soucy needs to be rocketed too the moon.

The funny thing is that I really see Vancouver winning the cup this year - laugh, watch Jimmy swing and get a couple guys the team needs no matter the cost and watch them go on a run

I think they'll re-sign him. Rutherford's comments about building for the future when discussing the Pettersson trade sure seems to suggest that.

"It’s been a trying season, to say the least. To be honest, we’re in a fight just to make the playoffs right now. But, we are building for the stretch run. And the thing is, we’re also building for the future as well. We’re building moving forward.”

They could go on a run if they make a significant fwd acquisition and EP goes back to being himself.

They weirdly have a similar vibe to the 2012 Kings, they just couldn't get it together until day 1 of the playoffs and made it on the last game of the season.

As a Pens fan whether the Canucks manage to extend MP or not doesn't matter to me in terms of evaluating this trade. Honestly I hope they do because I like it when trades work out for both teams and that's good for helping future deals happen between the two teams.

But for me it's a win either way for the Pens because getting a first back for MP is huge and it's an asset they desperately needed to get.

Maybe for Canucks fans the trade hinges on whether they can extend MP or not but for the Pens I don't think it particularly matters.

Probably better than a rental middle pair D, a middle-6 center with injury issues and a rental bottom-6 winger.

Right. The infamous mystery return without naming players, and teams. Ppl love living in a fantasy world full of hypotheticals they can even name. (Because they know they’ll get lit up about it)

100% but Vancouver might only have him for 30ish games. Unless he signs with the canucks it is a bad trade, but we cant know that yet until the summer, so just enjoy the ride.

Edit - if it helps them make the playoffs its also not a bad trade

You are right. The deal does hinge on him re-signing. 100%

Dumping those awful contracts opens up that pretty well though.

wth wasn't this exactly what VAN fans wanted after the Miller trade?! how does that happen.
