It will look a lot better once they make a move for a 2C. I can see their other 1st and Sutet going out the door for a player like Nelson and a prospect for a middle six winger. It’s not as good, but minus the Miller distraction, this could still be an effective group:

DeBrusk-EP-Boeser
Joshua-Nelson-?
Hoglander-Chytil-Garland

This requires them hanging onto Boeser though. If they don’t that’s another hole that needs to be filled.
Boeser + a pick for Nikolaj Ehlers would be a good trade for Vancouver.

Hard to look at it and smile when you put it that way. And even adding the 4 liner, getting out of VD contract for next year, and a few million in cap space doesn't make it any better. But, when you add in that the 4D could walk at the end of the season and when you look at the lineup card at centre now, it makes it even worse.... Sad day, but he had to go, I do believe. In a couple of years when JT is coaching, we might be glad he moved on- just wish it could have been for more...
How is a Dman playing over 22 MPG the last 2 years a #4?

He is a solid #3 and Miller was damaged goods we were never going to get fair value for him in the first place, people in NY should know this as Fox put 2 teams in the same situation.

Enjoy Miller's leadership Ranger fans.

100% but Vancouver might only have him for 30ish games. Unless he signs with the canucks it is a bad trade, but we cant know that yet until the summer, so just enjoy the ride.

To be fair, I bet they basically give Pettersson whatever he wants to stay. With the cap skyrocketing in the near future, they can justify giving him $6 million a year without any issues.

The bigger concern I see is that their forward group looks like trash with Miller gone.

and, it takes two to sign though and he is one of the "better" UFA D's this summer. There will be bidding wars for him.

The fact that the Penguins got back that milquetoast wanker Heinen, proves Mike Sullivan's the GM.
Seems Sully didn't much care for Heinen the first time. 10 minutes or less of ice in 17 of his last 25 games here the first go

round.

Nah it was definitely also to dump Heinen, who was signed when? Oh right, at the same time. Lmao
At least management corrects their mistakes, can’t say the same for the oilers bad signings. Completely fine to give up a mid/late first for a 2/3 dman and to shed some bad contracts. Have a lot of cap to work with. Not everyone can just win a lottery and surround that player with junk and hope for the best.

not unreasonable at all to say Crosby isnt top 5. You have Howe, Orr, Getzky, Mario, Jagr as sure fire players ahead of Crosby. Guys like Hasek, Esposito, Lidstrom, Forsberg, Sakic, Beliveau, OV are in the discussion.
If one actually goes through all the arguments, peak, prime, longevity, peaks, valleys ect Crosby's resume stands alone here unless one is SC counting with a guy like Beliveau and if that's a plus for him Crosby's 3 SC post Salary cap era are a huge plus over some other guys being mentioned.

I love Jagr and I think that the guys over on the HOH section tend to rag on him a bit but even then he isn't ahead of crosby at this stage.

Esposito lead the league in goals and points 6x. Peak Lindros was generational. Crosby isn't far and away better than these players.
Seriously no one puts either of these 2 guys ahead of crosby all time not even the original guy who brought it up and it's not even up for debate.

He’s replacing Heinen who would be a fourth liner on a good day and was invisible the entire time here. We’ll be fine.
The point is that he shows flashes of being awesome, but just cannot put it together. That’s the frustrating part, not that he just sucks

Gretzky, Lemieux, Orr, Howe...are you trying to say that Crosby is better than Ovi, Jagr, Brodeur, Hasek?
All time yes that's what I'm saying and when you break down all the arguments and look at everything his resume stands up.

Brodeur isn't a guy that many would seriously bring up as top 10 not sure why you are including him here.

I don't know enough about goalies and think that comparing them to position players is difficult but this group (that the OP was referencing most likely ) has Brodeur as the 5th best goalie of all time and you might learn something by doing a little reading.

But like I said goalies are the hardest to separate from individual play to the teams that they play on for the most part.

I agree. It’s not imposing but has solid depth. If they could pick up Cozens for their 1st I would be more impressed. With the money going out from Miller they can afford it. He’s also closer in age to Peter and Hughes.
Sabres are and never were trading Cozens for a first round pick. Cozens is only being traded for equal player or a package for a better player

I think Vancouver did pretty well in the Miller trade given the circumstances but I really don't love this one. Imo that rangers pick is worth a lot, particularly if it slides to next year. They really need MP to fit in well and to extend him

Vancouver Canucks?

More like Vancouver Swedes...

But the deal seems reasonable for both sides. PIT should also move guys like Rakell and Rust for picks and/or prospects.

Petts is a solid number 3 and should fit well behind Hughes and Hronek. He won't bring much offense or physicality but has good positioning and solid defense

The Canucks can only hope that the pick turns into MP 4-5 years from now. If he's a fit and they extend him its a massive win.

I love MP but he is a UFA and they do need to extend him. My main concern is that there are a lot of teams in the East trending up and the rangers are going in the opposite direction. If that pick slides, and then Pittsburgh and NYR are bad next year, they would have two potential lottery picks in a draft with a generation center talent when their current generational center talent is in the last few years of his career. Stop me if you've seen this one before

The trade basically ended up:

-Miller
-Desharnais
-Heinen
-Fernstrom
-Brannstrom
-Dorrington

for

-Pettersson
-O'Connor
-Chytil
-Mancini

That's more pieces coming from Vancouver, but I think Desharnais, Heinen and Brannstrom were basically zero/negative value guys. Still though. giving up Miller and what looks like 2 decent prospects for Pettersson, O'Connor, Chytil and another decent prospect doesn't seem all that great for Vancouver.

We needed to appease our original Elias Pettersson (EP40), since there was a publicized rift between him and Miller (and JT was rumored to have pissed off most people he's played with, e.g. why Horvat got dealt to NYI). Management made the decision to trade Miller, and getting (and re-signing) MPetey, Chytil who's a middle-6 C with upside and freeing up cap by dumping Heinen and Desharnais so they can hunt for a 2C seems like necessary business to solve 2 problems (top-4 D and remove a locker room cancer). I'm taking a cautiously optimistic approach.

Unless something really weird happens I doubt that the NYR pick will be in the top 10, more likely it's a middle first round pick.

With Miller it's likely they make a good run at a playoff spot now and the Pens will get a 25 pick instead of a slightly deeper 26 one.

That being said the Pens sure can kickstart their rebuild as this season looks like a lost one and they might be able to draft a franchise altering Dman in Matt Schaefer and another good piece with the NYR pick.

I'm biased but I think it's a good deal for the Penguins as it's getting peak value for two impending UFA's. On paper this has a chance to be a better return than the Guentzel trade, even if I'm still bullish on the pieces we got from Carolina. Really depends where that Rags pick lands.

Dubas is taking a shotgun approach to rebuilding the farm system and has accrued an absurd amount of picks in his short time as GM. 15 picks in the first 3 rounds of the draft the next 3 years. Maybe not the super high end quality prospects, but he's taking the volume approach and hoping one of the lottery tickets pays out.

What kind of contract will MP get

Sure, but if there's any way to keep him it isn't by rebuilding.
Did the Devils rebuild last year? Sometimes you have a down year and need to recalibrate, Canucks always desperate and exhaust assets.
