I also think Desharnais is a useful addition for the Penguins as well, mostly because they're small and soft and Desharnais is actually big and physical (or at least more physical). I'm not thrilled about taking Heinen back because I think he may end up blocking out young guys like Tomasino and Koivunen, but Desharnais does fill a need and I don't think he'd really be blocking anyone on the Penguins.

The Canucks are probably happy his contract was moved but I don't mind the Penguins taking him on.

I think it's a good deal for both teams. Pittsburgh gets a nice pick to kick off the rebuild, Vancouver gets the underrated Pettersson and O'Connor is a nice add. Not sure this is the right move for Vancouver because, how far can they go without their best offensive player, but it keeps them competitive at least and they badly needed a top 4 Dman.

You'll be disappointed with Desharnais. It was shocking how little physicality he brought. Was improving through the year until his dreadful Edmonton game though.

Heinen has only played well on the Bruins and never had success elsewhere (including Sullivan's Penguins a couple years ago). It's really strange.

I think Dubas has won some and lost some, but he's definitely been working at it and I think overall the Penguins are in better shape now than they were when he was hired. Nothing Earth-shattering, but movement in the right direction.

He certainly can anchor that second pairing which puts everybody in their correct place. Soucy and Myers as your 3 & 4 guys is awful. Those two as your 4 & 5 isn’t amazing but it’s definitely passable especially when your top trio of Quinn/Hronek/MP is one of the best in the league. The deep depth of Forbort, Juulsen and Mancini is fine, especially if Mancini continues to develop. And MP, if resigned, may be an ideal partner to insulate Willander with next year.

It’s potentially a very, very top tier in the league blueline group.

The forward group on the other hand…there’s so much to prove there and tons of questions. It doesn’t look great to me at this point and I think some are putting way too much hope into EP suddenly becoming a superstar alpha again with Miller out the door. Outside of that the depth is fine but it’s just a ton of complimentary pieces.

Demko is such a mystery in net right now. Lankinen has been admirable as a full in but if high-end Demko is cooked, there’s another “situation” you have to figure out.

This is definitely a retool - not a rebuild - so I’d say more shoes are gonna drop in Vancouver.

I would be surprised if Boeser isn’t moved before the deadline. I don’t think management wants to commit to him longterm and would rather replace his spot in the lineup with someone who brings more speed and/or size. If he’s dealt for the obligatory 1st+ before the deadline I can see them trying to flip that for someone else. Columbus has been rumoured as a team that apparently covets Brock, maybe something involving him and Cole Sillinger?

I don't think there's a whole heck of a lot that anyone could do to make the Penguins competitive now, other than small, incremental changes.

It seems to me that when Dubas took over, the Pens had no cap space, no prospects and no draft capital. Now they have a smish of cap space, a smish of prospects, and a good deal of draft capital.

Still not a lot to work with, but better than before.
