Oh god, Miller gets super lucky off a Boston turn over and scores. Gonna hear so much about how well he's doing instead of just letting go.

I saw JT at taphouse at park royal with Hronek and Sherwood the day after the Florida game when he came back in December. His wife was also there. I got seated right next to them and they were definitely having fun and you could tell Miller was very happy to be back, I listened to their conversation for about an hour, kinda hard not to I was a bit in shock being sat right beside my favorite canuck. No one else in the restaurant noticed, except whoever was playing the music put on the goal song "don't you forget about me", dude was so happy when that song came on.. ah man, this sucks
I had a similar situation but with Juulsen and other Abby Nucks at the time, they were DT for a Lions game. I listened to their conversation and my only takeaway was Juulsen fits the dumb but personable jock stereotype to a tee.

You can't really look at this Miller deal in total isolation. With Rutherford and Allvin, it's always about how it fits with the 'next deal'.

I see a few other GM's were spinning that Vancouver had a better deal from the Rangers a month or so ago, but waited too long and had to accept less. But I really think the 'sticking point' was the first round draft choice. The Rangers didn't want to give up one up, and it was 'no deal' from the Canucks without one.

So when the Rangers clawed their way back into the playoff race in East, they blinked. And of course as we know that first rounder became the centerpiece of the deal with the Pens for Pettersson and O'Connor.

And the Rangers retained all of Miller's $8m salary, which opens up a ton one cap space. So if the Canucks were to take a serious off-season run at either Rantenen or maybe even Marner, all would be forgiven.

The 'end-game' can often take a lot longer time than one season.

He’s flying and does not look checked out, as expected.

Well, he probably wasn't going to look like that if he had stayed.

I think we all knew that him reverting back to being engaged Miller was quite likely and thats why the situation was so frustrating.

I have a terrible feeling the day after now, thinking we traded the wrong guy. I really hope I'm wrong on this.

I hope he does well for NYR. Partly because the pick will be later in the draft. But partly also to cause a ruckus in the playoffs for whoever they play (FLA or whoever).

Doubt it, his hothead attitude gonna cause some players on the Rangers to question their future there.

Millers piss poor attitude, in the locker room and the media, was always just that, piss poor. As one of the leaders in the room, he could’ve straighten out his attitude but no. He had to be someone who constantly bitched and whined his bravado.

The players might say stuff on social media and to the media saying he was a great guy, good team player. While some of it is true, they must’ve breathed a sigh of relief the noise is gone.

His baby mama drama, bitching, piss poor play on the ice for this season reached a breaking point. If he was ONLY willing to waive for New York instead of other contending teams, you know what they say.

Happy wife, happy life.

Enjoy that Miller, should’ve signed a pre-nup.
What the heck are you talking about? His wife loved Vancouver and embraced it more than anyone.

You’re clearly way off base here.

Well yeah, that's who Miller is. Extremely motivated and dynamic when things are going well or he has his head in it, but a complete malignant disease to the entire team's psychology when they aren't. Good for the Rangers (and us) if they do well this year, but when the bottom falls out of that Rangers team that's already on the downswing and has had locker room issues he'll be a big part of why.

For sure, I think that all discussions about these two trades needs to be couched with an understanding that this ****ing sucks and we should all be mad that we've gotten to this place.
It’ll be very hard to stomach watching Pettersson play the same now that Miller is gone. If trading Miller doesn’t solve the EP mental issues or on ice play, then how do you keep Pettersson?

If EP doesn’t elevate his game, the noise could arguably get louder than its ever been. It would be completely fair too. There is still a window before his clause kicks in to move him. I’m not convinced the story of this drama is fully over yet.

If EP, management and fans think the noise is going to die down now that Miller is gone, could be in for a shock.

This is why I struggle with the inferences being drawn.

If the loner Pettersson has been lazy and slacking, and the popular Miller was justifiably upset with him, then trading Miller for peanuts instead of Pettersson for a real return would be insanity. You’re losing value, trading the better performer when you’re trying to win, and destroying morale in the room by trading everyone’s buddy instead of the guy everyone is frustrated with.

Maybe management is that dumb but it just seems too unlikely. I agree they both seem to be to blame but there has to be more than this.

Conversely, if the younger, more talented Pettersson (and other players) were actually getting bullied by JT Miller and his struggles were the result of that, it would make zero sense to be keeping the problem bully and trading your superstar 1C at a discount. But we know that they did look very hard at moving Pettersson and have nearly traded him to Carolina twice.

The logical inference here is that the team found the two players to be roughly equally culpable.

Sadly, this who's at fault debate is going to go on for a long time. It sucks that internal strife caused a very promising core to breakup. They're not the Beatles but I'm sure it feels that way for some.
That said, the most important, perhaps the only, question that should be asked is: what's the best way forward, how can we leverage assets including cap space to become as competitive as possible as soon as possible?...ok, that's two questions but they are basically the same.

"Vancouver wanted zero retention, and with a player like Miller, with his style of play. When father time catches up, the drop in play is usually drastic and not gradual"
My thoughts exactly. When player gets on the other side of 30, you really never know how it's going to go.

Guys like the Sedins, McDavid, Crosby even Joe Thornton will always be productive players well into the mid-30's and even beyond. But for a lot of other guys, the decline is slow but steady. And some guys just fall off a cliff.

I thought the Canucks were taking a big risk when they signed Miller to his massive extension. I guess they figured they were getting the 100-point version of Miller until he was 33 or so, but might eventually have to accept him underperforming his contract during the final three seasons.

But even that's not a given. The Rangers retaining 100 percent of his salary is a big underrated part of this deal.

Oh yeah, for sure. Don’t think there is any question that Pettersson is also to blamed and I’m not trying to suggest otherwise. Sensitive and sarcastic are an awkward combo and I can see how that would lead him to take things too personally, not deal with them in a professional way, or be able to let things go.

I just don’t buy the narrative that heart and soul Miller was buddies with everyone on the team and just got himself in trouble because he was (justifiably) hard on the guy with all the talent in the world for being lazy / out of shape. Prioritizing moving him if that is the backdrop just makes no sense without there being more.

No way. Equally responsible?

We have the timeline of Miller rumours going back to when he was with the Rangers. For Pettersson, it's only now, and it's only when dealing with a malcontent that has put off others in the locker room per Cam Robinson (Hughes and Demko cited).

Yet another narrative MS. Just one more onto the pile of garbage narratives to paint these two with the same brush. Pettersson could have a part on it, no question, but an equal culprit? Not bloody likely.

They got rid of the most probable instigator. That is the most logical inference to make here.
