why do the avs do this? easy no for me. markstrom doesn't hold that value
Markstrom has had a good year, and for whatever reason Van wanted Varly then that could also be arranged. However one good year for Markstrom isn't getting Van a 2nd and the Avs likely aren't moving Ranta yet.
Maybe swap him for Grubbi, to give them some extra goalie depth.

Huge no for me

This year but Varly has the history to back him up
Varly's only value to the Avs is as a trade asset at this point, Ranta is a coin-flip prospect, and we draft horribly outside of the Top 15.
This is giving up essentially nothing on the Avs end for a goalie that actually deserves to be on an NHL icesheet.
Easy yes every day of the week for me. Take the gamble, worst case scenario Markström doesn't work out in Denver and the Avs are forced to give Gru or Franky a longer look.
Avs fans underrating Markström here it seems.
He's been excellent this year, however a goalie who finally has a good season at age 29 just doesn't have a ton of trade value because goalie markets are weird.
Also the bolded is a terrible way of viewing the situation.
Feel free to correct me.
Guy has been in the league for 8 years. One good year doesn't erase all the bad years he's had. Have we learned nothing about goalies having one good year? Case in point Talbot.Does the past dictate what happens in the future or?
Pass on this easily.
Viewing things from a worst case scenario wont yield accurate results, nor is trying to create correlation where there is none.
There is nothing to gain from a team devaluing their own assets. That's how you get EDM.
Its just straight up a losers mindset and I'd recommend against it.
You’ve yet to explain where any of the pieces we give up have value. More value than an actual NHL caliber goalie.
As far as Markstrom, there is only a small sample size of success and he's older which doesn't have any precedent for a strong return.
I'm not going to have a silly argument where you think the Avs assets hold no value. Like I said, its simply a losers mindset that wont lead to anything of benefit.

Doesn't Vancouver have goaltending issues anyways? They just started a junior goalie a couple games ago.
