Avs Acquire: Jakob Markstrom

Canucks Acquire: Semyon Varlamov + 2019 2nd + Sampo Ranta

Markstrom has had a good year, and for whatever reason Van wanted Varly then that could also be arranged. However one good year for Markstrom isn't getting Van a 2nd and the Avs likely aren't moving Ranta yet.

Maybe swap him for Grubbi, to give them some extra goalie depth.

Hard no from me.

We've spent all this time and effort developing Markstrom and he finally seems to have ascended to the next level. Canucks may have a hidden gem here in Markstrom. It might not be the equivalent of that time when Neo discovered that he was The One, but it might be close.

Hard pass.

why do the avs do this? easy no for me. markstrom doesn't hold that value

Varly's only value to the Avs is as a trade asset at this point, Ranta is a coin-flip prospect, and we draft horribly outside of the Top 15.

This is giving up essentially nothing on the Avs end for a goalie that actually deserves to be on an NHL icesheet.

Easy yes every day of the week for me. Take the gamble, worst case scenario Markström doesn't work out in Denver and the Avs are forced to give Gru or Franky a longer look.

Avs fans underrating Markström here it seems.

An extra year at a lower rate? A second round pick isn't getting that.

Even if the play was equal (and it hasn't been in Markstrom's favour the entirety of their careers) the dollars and cents of it wouldn't make sense.

We have Demko but what has he played? Two games? I'd much rather keep Markstrom for another year then risk Varlamov walking and leaving us with a rookie goalie and our new guy as our one-two.

He's been excellent this year, however a goalie who finally has a good season at age 29 just doesn't have a ton of trade value because goalie markets are weird.

Also the bolded is a terrible way of viewing the situation.

Feel free to correct me.

The amount of Canucks fans in here not even considering this should tell you something.

Feel free to correct me.

Viewing things from a worst case scenario wont yield accurate results, nor is trying to create correlation where there is none.

There is nothing to gain from a team devaluing their own assets. That's how you get EDM.

Its just straight up a losers mindset and I'd recommend against it.

Does the past dictate what happens in the future or?

Pass on this easily.
Guy has been in the league for 8 years. One good year doesn't erase all the bad years he's had. Have we learned nothing about goalies having one good year? Case in point Talbot.

You’ve yet to explain where any of the pieces we give up have value. More value than an actual NHL caliber goalie.

As far as Markstrom, there is only a small sample size of success and he's older which doesn't have any precedent for a strong return.

I'm not going to have a silly argument where you think the Avs assets hold no value. Like I said, its simply a losers mindset that wont lead to anything of benefit.

It’s called being realistic. This is giving up a 2nd for an NHL goalie, something the Avs desperately need.

Clinging onto fringe prospects and draft picks in the hopes they magically solve the franchise’s issues on their own is a loser’s mindset.

I'd swap Grubauer for him. Might even add to Gru a bit, but not a ton since Gru has the better track record before coming to Colorado. That being said, Vancouver probably isn't ready to lose Markstrom and most teams probably aren't prepared to pay a price that changes the Nucks minds.

Doesn't Vancouver have goaltending issues anyways? They just started a junior goalie a couple games ago.

A 2nd / Ranta is a big price for 1 more year of a goalie who isn't any better than Varlamov.

Markstrom has played significantly better this year...makes significantly less and has a year left

with a deal like this they probably play varlamov to end the season, he probably helps em get a better pick, then they chase bobrovsky hard in the offseason
