It’s not an HF driven narrative. NHL clubs in real life have shown the tendency to place a premium on it. The bar has not been high for physical players; Gaustad, Hanzal, Foligno, Savard and Chiarot have returned the coveted 1st round pick over the years. For skill wingers, it’s been very high; Gaborik, Vanek (on multiple occasions), Nyquist, Zuccarello and Hall (to Boston) did not get them.
A bit misleading…

Gaborik was injured most of that year so his value dropped. LA took a risk.

and…

The one time Vanek was traded as a coveted pending UFA trade target he returned a 1st and a 2nd (and Moulson). The other trades are not comparable.

and

Zucc was a conditional 1st but the conditions were not met.

and

None of these players had only a $300k post-deadline cap hit.

Not trying to start a fight. Just saying that those guys are not great comparables. Pretty sure everyone understands that the deadline can sway the market one way or the other. Chris Campoli and Paul Gaustad are evidence of that.

So, with the rumours of the cap only going up 1 year. Plus the comments made at recent meetings about GMs being unable to make moves due to tight cap issues for contending teams and current injuries to key players.

What does a Kuzmenko for less than $500k at the TDL return now I wonder?
