What has Lundqvist done to even indicate he's:

A. Qualified
B. Interested
He's one of the most fierce competitors in the history of the sport, he reminds me a lot of Rod Brind'amour; whose gone on to be an excellent coach. He loves New York. Hank is on that Crosby level of obsession with the game, who I think many also think will eventually be a coach. When the heart thing happened he kept posting about how hockey is still his life and how much he loves to compete, people have long said that he'll have a place in the Rangers organization for life. He is probably the most charismatic player in the history of hockey and I think he could really get a team fired up to win. He's intelligent, very well spoken, intense, passionate, and was some of the best preparedness and focus for clutch situations of any player ever.

I've seen some people suggest other front office roles like scout, etc but I think because of his competitive nature and wanting to be in the action, he'd want a coaching position. I'm not saying we go ahead and name him head coach out of nowhere without experience lol. Almost every single coach is a retired NHL player, I don't get the argument that Lundqvist is unqualified or doesn't have experience, he's not even retired as an NHL player yet. Obviously he doesn't have the experience yet. I don't know, maybe I'm thinking more with my heart than my head but I just can't see him not wanting to be in some coaching position and getting an opportunity to still lift the cup as a Ranger.

Nothing you said here is any indication Lundqvist is interested or qualified for a job in hockey after he retires. It's just a pile of wishful thinking.

Basically no players are qualified for a job in hockey before they're even retired though lol

You simply never know who ends up working in hockey after they retire. Like I said, it's just a whole bunch of wishful thinking here.

None of Messier, Graves, Leetch or Richter are part of our management or scouting group. But Drury, Glass, Eminger and Ortmeyer are. Time will tell. maybe Lundqvist will be part of this organization moving forward, or maybe not.

But there's no way of knowing. Throwing all these empty platitudes around isn't making the case you think you are.

Fierce competitor?
Obsession with the game?
Loves to compete?
Most charismatic player in history of hockey?
Well-spoken, intelligent, passionate?

I mean, it all sounds nice but none of this is any indication he will be part of this organization after he retires.

How about this?

Henrik Lundqvist says he’ll work for Rangers after retirement

Same goes for Hank as would have gone for Messier. You'd like to be head coach? How does 2-3 years living in Hartford and learning your trade hit you? I'd love to see him back in some capacity but that's a job you have to pay dues for. Allaire isn't getting any younger; maybe goaltender coach could be a start. Drury's a hot candidate for GM roles elsewhere (having paid the dues and then some); maybe they can see Lundqvist as Assistant GM material. He's a bright man... how well suited to a near-invisible job I would wonder a little.

Valiquette would make a great color guy... maybe not tame enough in his opinions for the network suits to give 60 minutes of spontaneous air to. Right now he gets a little time to think through his presentation and temper his candor. As far as coaching or anything else goes, that likely depends on how successful and happy he is with his Clear Sight Analytics business. He could not for a moment keep that going while officially wearing Ranger colors... I'd be surprised if he isn't already needing to battle some conflict of interest concerns in marketing his services.

Brind'Amour is unavailable.
Something about Gallant seems fishy to me (and I don’t mean when he was an assistant coach for the Islanders.)

He’s been head coach of three NHL teams, (people probably don’t remember him coaching the Blue Jackets because they were terrible,) and—like clockwork—he was fired partway through his 3rd season with them. He was also fired 16 months ago and hasn’t been hired since.

I also don’t think the team is ready for that kind of coach yet anyway.

Gallant would be a fine hire, if only because taxis are readily available in the city should things turn sour with him...

GM or coach without any experience leading up to it, no.

As an advisor to one of those positions, or assistant GM once Drury finally gets nabbed by another team; sure.
I do suspect the plan is for JD to eventually move into an adviser/elder statesmen role with JG becoming President and Drury to GM.
Just my guess but it seems to make sense.

Same here. Unless he’s already spoken for with Seattle.

Gallant would already be here if there was mutual interest. If it hasn’t happened yet, it’s not happening.

I don't know what kind of coach he is nor what any kind of coach most of them are.

Gallant has had 3 coaching gigs. Without fail, he has been fired from all three before his third season is over. Twice before half a season has lasted. Once when his team was in first place. That is the definition of fishy. The Rangers have no need to hire a coach for two years just to go looking for one again.

Coach or Gm? At this moment, no. A bigger roll than an analyst? Absolutely. He's a fantastic stats guy with NHL experience. I'd love to see him as an assistant coach to get him that experience. He really sees the modern game well and understands how it should be played.

Why are we assuming he even wants that level of pressure and responsibility? He thrives on TV and seems to love his job. 3-4 years in with no success and he goes from an intelligent fan favorite analyst to run out of town with pitchforks.

If he does want to get involved in management, then yeah I would say giving him an advisor role to start with and progressing up through AGM would be a great route. Seems like Drury is heir-apparent though, so he would just be here to gain experience until he ultimately takes a job elsewhere.

What's more likely is he's poached by ESPN. Would be a major loss for us, but a huge win for the game of hockey with how well he's able to explain and articulate the nuances of the game.

I might have heard wrong but I thought some form of a position within the rangers is guaranteed after retirement. Ill see if there are any articles are out there. Possible I dreamed it :)

nm - I see jovo found it
