Sounds like Utah is looking for a new home for Michael Carcone, per Friedman.

Talk has picked up, and will continue to do so ... Utah’s Michael Carcone hasn’t played since Oct. 16, and that one’s growing some urgency to it.

Carcone has only played 3 games this year as his role has been overtaken by Utah's young players. But, he's only 28 and he had 21 goals last year. Underrated scoring touch as he led the AHL two years ago with 85 points in 65 games.

Carcone makes league minimum $775,000 and is a UFA at year's end.

So who needs some cheap scoring?

I’d give a mid-pick for him if I’m Colorado. He can do short stints up and down the line-up. Seems better than waiver quality every time I’ve seen him. Utah just has a lot of quality depth and guys getting healthy.

This is precisely the type of cheap (in both assets and cap) move I believe the Avs will be looking at for some band-aid help now and depth later in the season. That Carcone has a bit of a nose for the net is perfect to play as emergency spot duty on one of the wrecked scoring lines.

I mean...obviously he's managed to post a few points in the NHL, but i don't exactly know that he's a particularly useful NHLer. He's not exactly like the typical NHL/AHL "tweener" profile, in that he does actually seem capable of playing hard and he's not a terrible skater or anything. But he's not big and he's not a guy that a "good team" will want in their top-6. He's also not really a guy they'll want in their bottom-6 either. So i'm not sure where he really has a place, other than "minute filler" on a bad team.

He's just...too narrowly limited in what he can contribute. Can't score enough to play in the Top-6, too small and ineffective physically to play in the Bottom-6. Caught in that "in between". Sucks because he does seem like a guy who tries hard enough, but it's just not really there.

And NHL/AHL "scoring line tweener" is such a tough life. Most teams prefer to have their journeyman shuttle player be of a more defensive/physical inclination. Which is why i'd bet Carcone is in Europe this time next year.

I think he's maybe a little "stickier" as far as being an NHL depth guy than you do but essentially, even with your realistic appraisal - that's still better than literally half of the 12 forwards the Avs iced last night lol.

I actually think the Avs are particularly a team that could use a depth guy that leans into being more of a pesky, opportunistic scorer than your typical vanilla size/grit depth guy - at least for this season. The Avs are rumored to have liked Garland back in the day and I see Carcone as something of an "Aldi" Garland.

Underrated component with Carcone is he’s a much better fighter than you might think. Hasn’t shown it in the NHL much but he’s got a sneaky right had that is deadly. He’s not a soft player.

Still, he’s pretty small and is not a power forward by any means. Solid motor when he’s on, but consistency is his main issue. He scored goals in bunches and then goes cold.

GMs have slowly started to figure out concepts like unsustainable shooting percentages.

I can't see there being much of a market for him.
