Utah Mammoth players at the IIHF World Nationals.

Logan Cooley has scored!

Important goal as well. We decided to stop playing after going up 3-0 in the first period to allow Germany to tie the game. Made it 4-3 but with how things were going I was not confident still. Cooley's goal made it 5-3.

Cooley Garland and Keller now leading USA in scoring

However they will be humiliated when they start playing good teams IMO , they can barely win against the bottom teams

Cooley did eventually score on Vejmelka, and of course, it was set up by Keller.

We will face either Canada, Finland, or the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals depending on how the final two games today go.

Gregor Biber is doing well for Austria at WC. He plays such a responsible game for his age. He's already a pretty good stay-at-home defenseman and I'm pretty sure that he'll make his way into the NHL. The question is when: I think he'll see NHL ice sooner than later.

You've landed hell if a steal for a 4th round pick. Now if he can add a solid shot to his skillset, he could outpreform many, many prospects from his draft class.

Are players paid to play in the worlds? I don't think so but not entirely sure.

If not, I think it's pretty cool that so many players head over there after their seasons are done. Especially the one who head over right after their teams are eliminated from the playoffs (not referring to Utah players... yet)

There is no direct payment merely for playing in the tournament, but there is prize money awarded based on how far you go in the tournament (e.g. getting eliminated in the preliminary round is the same amount, losing quarterfinalists all get the same amount, then 1-4 get a proportional amount of prize money). I have no idea how much the prize money is, however.

Additionally, the national federation is free to award bonuses based on your finish. An interesting case is when Finland got robbed of a gold medal by a bad call in overtime of the gold medal game at the women's tournament, the Finnish hockey federation awarded them the bonus that they would have gotten for winning gold.

Oh that's great! I didn't know about the Finnish federation doing that, that's so cool. At the same time though, I doubt the money is a lot (esp compared to NHL salaries) so still impressive these players are actively choosing to play additional hockey. That seems really cool to me.

I did some more searching around to see what I could pull up about the amount. None of it is very current information, but the numbers gave me a vague idea.

When Sweden won gold in 2017, their total prize money was roughly 1 million euros, but it didn't say how it was split among the players (and presumably the coaches and team staff took a share as well).

Another article from 2019 said that Finland's players would take home 27,000 euros each if they won gold (which they did).

Neither source indicated how much of that prize money came from the IIHF's prize money for the tournament and/or national association's bonuses, however. It's not insignificant, but for the players who were making NHL salaries it's not much compared to that. On the other hand, 27,000 euros for, say, Harri Pesonen of the SCL Tigers in Switzerland, is a comparatively a lot.
