Utah Mammoth new name for Utah HC?

I mean with no disrespect to any of these teams, the Flyers is a pretty lame name. Like what is it, just everything that flies from planes to eagles?

I always thought it was like a piece of paper with information that got hung up. Named after all the flyers lining the walls and streets of Philly.

Mammoth is a horrorbad name, way too gimmicky and too much of a mouthful. You want a name that rolls off the tongue easy, Mammoth is exactly the opposite of that. Think Habs, Bruins, Leafs, Hawks, etc. Hard names never stick.

I'm guessing people will just call them the Moths.

On their return trip from the show, the group decided to stop at a restaurant on the New Jersey Turnpike. During this stop they had another team name brainstorming session, during which Phyllis (Ed Snider’s sister) suggested the team be named the Flyers. The name captured the speed of the game, had an alliteration while being short and sweet. Ed Snider immediately knew this would be the team name, however; he knew his sister could not be the winner of the Name the Team Contest!

I like the 2nd top one with blue in the background. The blue is appropriate to represent the ice of not just for hockey, but also for when Mammoths lived. Also, the fact that you made the Mammoth itself have blue eyes means it matches. It looks more seamless because of that.

Good logo IMO.

With the name itself, I agree with those in the topic saying they'd prefer it were Mammoths (plural) and not singular.

I mean don't get me wrong. The name is fine to good in practice today but that's really my point. If we view a lot of the team names already in existence from the lens of something proposed for a brand new team, I'd bet more than half would draw reactions like "awful. What the f***, why?" etc.

Our standards for what is lame also evolves over time. I'm sure Outlaws would've sounded bad ass in the 20s-50s but these days it sounds like an arena football name.

I found this to show how they came up with the name. Agreed that a lot names would be ridiculed if they were named today instead decades ago. You can through all of the big four sports and find names that would be laughed at and people what find dumb if they were named today.

Some of the names we don't really think about these days may have even been considered lame at the time they were created. I wouldn't know for sure since I don't have a time machine that enables me to go back in time, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least bit if even "Red Wings" (just as an example, I don't mean to single them out in particular) was considered a stupid name by some people at the time the team first started playing. As for "Utah Mammoth" (if that's what it ends up being) I'm sure that it won't really take me very long to cease having an opinion about whether I like the name or not, since by then that'll just be what the team name is.

On a side note, the 1990s were certainly... a weird time in the world of naming teams. I believe that when the Nordiques relocated to Denver, one of the names they were actually considering for the team was "Rocky Mountain Xtreme" and that it may have even had some decent traction.

I did so many variations because I couldn't decide what colors looked best but I would love for them to add brown to the color scheme, as II think it's vastly underused. But I have to admit. I just googled a mammoth logos/art/clipart... etc and just manipulated it to match UHC colors and added the state as the background. I just don't have the talent to make a logo from scratch
