Utah Hockey Club down to final 3 names: Hockey Club, Mammoth, and Outlaws (upd: Wasatch already nixed)

The problem is that Utah itself is bland. That's the reason why their college team is the Utah Utes.

Incredible nature though. Probably the best I've ever seen in the States. Just tough to name teams after geological formations. Utah Arches just doesn't make sense.

I asked chatGPT to suggest some names. How about Utah Locomotives (the Locos) or Scorpions (probably taken my some arena football team or something). Others include Phantoms, Peaks, Venom, Sidewinders, Vigilantes and Stallions.

Name them the Outlaws, then name the next expansion team the Hells Angels. Will make for a good rivalry!

Does seem crazy to have Hockey Club as a team name, don’t know what the heck Montreal was thinking back in the day.

Whatever they were thinking back then, for the past nigh on to a hundred years, they've thought "we can't just be 'le Club de Hockey Canadien', let's work on some nicknames, how about 'Canadiens' and 'les Habitants', maybe throw in a 'Habs' for short."

I really hope Utah goes with the only answer I consider good, but ultimately, it's up to the fans of the team, and I'm just an outsider throwing opinions out into the void. If they like something else, it'll be whatever they choose.

does that really matter? like New York Jets didn't get in the way of Winnipeg using Jets, multiple times.
New York Giants/San Fran Giants
Carolina Panthers/Florida Panthers
Sacramento Kings/LA Kings
I'm sure there's more too.

Utah Raptors would be cool

The two Giants teams settled any grievance by agreeing to have an annual picnic together once per year (IYKYK)

Side note the two CFL teams had totally different names. Saskatchewan is the Roughriders while Ottawa was the Rough Riders.

I don't love the remaining options, but I'd probably say Outlaws?

Mammoth, for some reason, just feels like more of a mouthful.

Then again, I thought the "Golden Knights" and the "Wild" sounded ridiculous when they were introduced, but they've grown on me significantly. With repetition, time, and decent branding, any name will probably work.

Exactly those are two perfect examples of a "minor league name" that grew on everyone.

Wait, what should The Flames be then? The Calgary Martin Luther King Jr.'s? The burning of Atlanta was a pretty big historical deal.

No. The Atlanta Flames would have been something historically tied in. It has nothing to do with Calgary whatsoever other than the franchise relocated from Atlanta. The Calgary Rockies (baseball name came 11 years after Atlanta relocated) would have been topical. Calgary Broncos, Calgary Stampede ... the Flames have zero to do with Alberta aside from when it is on fire every summer now.

There are 6 names shared across two major league sports, but none of them have come into existence in the last 30 years (the current Jets being a resurrected established brand).

Cardinals: 1920
Giants: 1925
Kings: 1972
Rangers: 1972
Jets: 1972 (or 1979 if you don't want to count the WHA years)
Panthers: 1995

Feelings about shared names have changed since even the 90s, as teams want to establish their own strong branding. Uniqueness is part of doing that. And clearly, if the current USPTO is going to reject a trademark of a hockey team because it's the same name as a cooler brand... there's no way they're going to approve one that's the same name as another major pro sports team.

I like the Outlaws as a name.

Utah Outlaws.

Some pretty sick marketing can come from that. Awesome mascot. Sell bandanas and cowboy hats to the kids.

Mammoth is a meh for me. We wouldn't name them Elephants and that's basically the same. I guess they can market some cute stuffed animals to the kids and have a snuffleupagus type mascot. Weird.

Utah H would be the best name in the league, no kidding. North American sport team names are so juvenile and sad, aside from a few classics that actually have historical or environmental ties to the team location. The league would look a lot more serious with Vancouver HC, New York HC, Edmonton HC, Colorado HC.

Seriously. The 'Ducks'. The 'Flames'. The 'Coyotes'. The 'Penguins'. At least the Pittsburgh Steelers have historic reasons to be named Steelers. Same with the Red Wings. Most of these dumb names are just forced.

That’s your opinion. My opinion is that Utah hockey club is the worst name in the league. No imagination. Asking another hockey fan what team do you cheer for, “I’m a fan of the hockey club.” As you can tell, I don’t like it, JD.
