Proposal: UTA - EDM Deadline deal

Michael Kesseling (RHD) $1.4 M AAV X2 then RFA
Nick Bjugstad (C) $2.1 M AAV Pending UFA (50% retention makes it $1.05 M AAV)
Karel Vejmelka (G) $2.725 M AAV Pending UFA

Calvin Pickard (G) $1 M AAV X2
Viktor Ardvisson (W) $4 M X2
Oilers 1st round pick 2026
Oilers 3rd round pick 2026

This trade assumes Utah isn't going to make the playoffs* and Connor Ingram comes back healthy in net. Also assumes Vejmelka will test free agency.

Utah gets a decent back up for Ingram with a cheap contract and great teammate in Pickard. Ardvisson has had injuries but is a right shot former 36 goal scorer. He's been underwhelming this year in Edmonton but looks good in the Four Nations Cup playing for Sweden. Might be finally getting into form after missing most of last season.

They also get good picks in a good draft. 2026 is supposed to be a lot deeper than 2025.

Oilers get some rentals to fill out the holes in their line up. Kesselring is an underrated RHD who can shore up the right side.

*they're out right now and we'll have a better sense of the playoff picture by the deadline.

I think you are better off targeting somebody else. Let's be clear - he's not some untouchable top pairing stud. But he's a 6-5, multi-purpose defender who just turned 25 and has shown a tremendous growth curve - and his contract is absolute gold right now at $1.4 million for this year and next. He fits everything Utah is trying to build and the last thing they need are more picks and prospects. What they need are guys to build around who have shown talent but also have experience and are still young. Which is...this guy.

Probably something similar to the Hagel trade (2 1sts + 2 B Prospects).

Kesselring isn't on the market and it would need to be a significant overpay to pry him out.

Man, I wish we never traded him. We would be that much closer if we hadn't.

Oilers need to add Matt Savoie to this to make the value make sense for Utah.

all teams in win now mode makes there types of trades and it backfired. The funny part is that the guy he got traded for made a B line back to Arizona and did not negotiate with Edmonton at all --almost like Arizona said we are trading for but we want yo back

2. Savoie? I'd consider it.

Two of these players are pure rentals in my book (Vejmelka and Bjugstad)

Kesselring is a 5-6 guy who adds depth and quality to the right side on defense, He's cheap too. I like him but not at multiple 1sts and multiple prospects. That seems a tad high, no?

Kesselring is averaging ~19 minutes a night for Utah. He's a 6'5, 25 yr old RHD making $1.4 mil who took a huge leap this season.

What incentive does Utah have to trade him for less when he fits their current timeline?

Trading for Bjugstad is not a win now move. It's Holland type trade. It was so stupid at the time it almost seem like Holland was a double agent
 
When making these proposals you have to think about what would appeal to the other team, not just your team.

Utah doesn't even have Ingram right now and is fighting for a playoff spot in their crucial first season where they can gain some fans for life. Right now they are buyers, not sellers. Connor Ingram is injured again and Vejmelka has been great so I highly doubt he's even up for grabs anymore, and might just re-sign anyway.

Utah could take your deal if you leave out Vejmelka, because they'll have a surplus of D-men soon, but no way are they replacing Vejmelka with a goalie who has an even worse GSAx than Skinner while almost exclusively playing the worst teams in the league, especially when they are fighting to make the playoffs.
 
This trade would just be Utah doing a huge favour for the Oilers.

Dumping Arvidson and the hopes he turns it around is going to cost you more.

Pickard is no better than Utah's 3rd stringer in Stauber.

Utah's depth at D isn't good, they need Kesselring more than the Oilers do.

I wouldn't count out Utah wanting to resign Vejmelka.

I think Utah is done collecting draft picks now.

If you honestly view Vejmelka and Bjugstad as pure rentals does this trade make any sense? If Skinner is on the team there is a nontrivial chance he keeps his starter role and you get almost nothing out of either Vejmelka or Bjugstad.

I really thought I explained this in the proposal quite clearly.

This is a trade deadline deal. This isn't a trade now deal. I mentioned Connor Ingram is hurt and this trade assumes he comes back healthy. It also assumes Vejmelka wants to test free agency.

If either of these assumptions aren't true then the trade, very obviously, can't come together.

Lastly, I also stated, and again I think quite clearly, that I also assume Utah isn't making the playoffs. As a trade deadline deal taking place in the future, we'll have a much better understanding as to where they are in the standings. Will they be right there, on the cusp of making it in? Okay, no trade.

Are they so far back that realistically they can't make the playoffs? Then maybe they deal a pending UFA or two to a contender.

When criticizing a proposal you have to actually read it and determine what the poster is actually saying.

I don't bank on either of them signing with the Oilers. It is of course possible if things go well, but I don't make the trade contingent on any extensions.

Sorry, I just saw it and shook my head, but yeah...that's a lot that has to go in our favour to even be considered a plausible scenario. And even then, why would they want Arvidsson at $4 million? You should also put down that this assumes Arvidsson would magically go on a crazy heater in the 7 games before the trade deadline... Or win MVP at the Bore Nations.

If you give up a first, someone like Savoie, plus more don't you think it is crucial to get more than a 5/6 defenseman and two rentals especially if one will be your #4C and there is a non-trivial chance that the goalie ends up as a backup. Vejmelka is certainly not a sure fire upgrade in terms of consistency.

I was never a fan of the Kesslering deal and I know they are taking Arvidsson but he is not really someone that hurts the Oilers. He may need to be moved if they were to bring in more of an impact player for salary purposes but frankly this deal seems like a massive risk to me.

If Veggie didnt want to resign I suppose a trade like this could happen. I personally think he likes where he is at and will resign with Utah.
With Durzi coming back, DeSimone looking ok and Lamoureux in the AHL I could see Utah using Kesselring as a trade chip but for a young 2C.
