Very much thought this was the Rags getting Maatta and was quite confused. Still not sure how the same team has to pay a 2nd to move Walman but gets a 3rd for a worse defenceman

People definitely underestimating Maatta in here because he isn't flashy, has weaknesses, and doesn't score points.

Solid stay at home D, exactly what Utah needed, at a low cost. Would have been better if he was a RHD but for the cost he was definitely better than anyone else on the market. No, Holl or Liljegren are not better than Maatta at what he does. Holl would be cheaper and Liljegren has more value and is a better player, but neither are better stay at home D.

Maatta was probably the best of Holl, Petry, etc but this gives room for a permanent spot for Johansson. Seems like a win for both team.

I'd have happily sent Liljegren for that 3rd rounder. Nice deal for Detroit for a player that was expendable for them.

And good on Utah for making a low key move when they needed it. Most teams seem to refuse to make a trade early in the season, even when something is needed.

Utah was over a barrel. Durzi and Marino both out for months and they were floundering.

Do you really think Maanta will stop the "floundering?"

- Durzi out until around April.
- Marino out until maybe March.
- Sergachev is running 28-29 minutes TOI per game.
- Utah had several D in the pipeline who aren't ready yet (even though Lamerioux is holding his own so far).
- Current D is leaky because none of them are stay at home types (the Kings forwards literally mugged them in front of their net the other night).


Maatta amounts to an early insurance rental to keep things together until Durzi and/or Marino get back.

I thought that is why we signed Cole and Bortuzzo for?

I think yesterday morning we had exactly one defenseman on the roster who could reliably get the puck out of his corner and effectively up to his winger for a controlled outlet. Today, we MIGHT have two. That’s worth a pick in the 90s.

All we need to stop the bleeding is a couple of legitimate NHL caliber blueliners (too many on the current roster don’t qualify) who don’t run around their own zones like chickens with their heads cut off, and can actually start a break out now and again. It’s possible Maatta can do those very simple things that have evaded Utah the last week or two. If he can, this was a much needed addition. If he can’t, it cost a pick in the 90s that was bought with Alex Meruelo’s money anyway.

I'm not sure it is market economy when the reporting is that Yzerman called one team (SJS) and just made the deal without shopping it around to see if anyone would have paid them to acquire Walman.

Why would we trade away a RHD for a LHD? I don't want to trade Lilly but it seems the team has soured on him, and so we now have too many Dmen, so something has to give. Hopefully we dump Timmins, Myers and Dewar to make room instead.

He was just traded for a 3rd and 6th + Benning who is a RHD and has a better contract than Valimaki. So I think the Leafs did well here considering.
