Team Finland has a blueline problem because a lot of first-round dmen didn't develop as expected:

Lassi Thomson (19th)
Ville Heinola (20th)
Juuso Valimaki (16th)
Urho Vaakanainen (18th)
Henri Jokiharju (29th)
Olli Juolevi (5th)
Julius Honka (14th)

I don't know if there's a connection between developing Finnish dmen or just pure coincidence, but then their defense looks like it did at the Four Nations.
Then again, it's Finland, so they'll probably just medal in 2026 and nobody will be surprised.

He’s had so many setbacks and suffers from something not a lot of hockey players suffer from. He doesn’t play well when he’s banged up. Problem is, most NHL dmen are banged up from October through late Spring.

So if he’s claimed, a team is just taking a flier and normally you won’t do that with the extra year.

Normally, when I see somebody making this claim, I think that it’s off base because so often players pass through. But in this case I could see Valimaki being picked up.

The usual line of logic goes “if there was the faintest chance there was a modicum of interest for a player he’d have been traded for a late draft pick. If a player is waived this means the manager put out feelers and nobody showed interest.”

But the corollary to this is “but if an injury happens after the waiving that suddenly gives a team that didn’t have need before that injury reason to claim, it happens”

Enter Pittsburgh.

There’s also the third possibility that a team is incapable of figuring out a way to do a dollar in four dollar out trade for the player because so many teams are right up against the cap or over it with LTIR. So once the player hits waivers, it’s up to the claiming team to make the cap work, which, as you pointed out a team with an injury can do.

Please somebody claim this guy. It’s funny that he was one of the original 7 d-men named to team Finland. 3 injuries later, 3 replacements later, and he was still healthy scratched for all 3 games.

Coming from the fan base that said Norlinder was worth more than Gaudreau
Huh????.

... And you thought at some point Mete was better than Hronek, that Montreal should not trade Gallagher for RNH and that Juulsen was part of the Habs core.

You are not immune to poor talent evaluation.

At the time both Suzuki and Vaalimaki were top prospects, and Habs pool sucked ass at LHD so much Bergevin drafted like 6 in the same draft.

Vaalimaki's knee got destroyed. Shit happens, who knows if his career would have gone another trajectory if that did not happen.
I don't remember saying anything about mete vs hronek lmao

And yeah juulsen after being drafted should have been part of the core. What's crazy about thinking a recent 1rst round pick is expected to be part of the core and become the #4

He was intriguing after too, but losing the 2019-20 season after looking very good in his first pro season and like he was a sure fire top 4 defenseman, it really hurt his development.

by Flames "fans" I'm sure you mean just one moron. painting an entire fanbase with the same brush does nothing but make you look as bad as the moron you are referring to
It was the entire flames posters on that thread idea of Suzuki for valimaki

The Flames and their fans had high hopes for Valimaki. And then the wheels fell off that wagon...

I wouldn't be surprised if the Flames claimed him. They could use some help at LD and have the cap room.

A free asset that could provide some depth.

I could see the Flames giving him another shot due to familiarity and lack of depth.

In a perfect world Flames could trade Miromanov for Valimaki. Save Utah a little money and hopefully upgrade their defence.

He was very good for AZ in his 1st season with them. It’s been all down hill since then. He had a pretty gruesome facial injury - not sure if there’s lingering effects or if it’s coincidence.
