Rumor: [UTA] D Dimitri Simashev expected to sign ELC with the Mammoth (3 years)

Interested to see how he does

The popular opinion with my fellow Utah fans (which I'll agree with since I don't know any better and didn't form an opinion on my own) is that his floor is a top 4 defenseman who plays more of a shutdown role than providing offense. The offensive talent is there and has the potential to be refined for him to produce at the NHL level as well, but if that doesn't happen, he can still play on the 2nd (or even 1st) pair in a shutdown role.

If he can anchor the 2nd d pair and pk it’s not bad at all. Don’t really need to drive the offense from the backend with sergachev and durzi there.

Just be able to make the simple passes and put the puck on net when needed.

Sounds about right. The current player I'd compare him to, assuming he reaches about his full potential, is Jaccob Slavin. Plays a shutdown role because that's what's needed by his team, and although the offensive potential is there, he doesn't need to use it, but his excellent defensive play allows his D partner to open things up and create offense, knowing that he can trust his partner to cover for him if things go south.

So a Hjalmarsson type of guy?

That kind of works too, I suppose. I'm not really sure about how I'd rate Hjalmarsson's potential ability to create offense, since I didn't watch him a lot except for his time on the Coyotes where he played an almost purely shutdown role in order to unleash his D partner.

Sergechev - Durzi
Simashev - Marino
Maatta/Cole - Kesselring/Lamourex

Not a bad D-Core when healthy.
Can see them wanting to push Simashev down a pair to shelter him initially.

Utah is set up really nicely with another top 5 pick this year and their plethora of young players + prospects

That's very valuable. Should be a good player

So he's the Russian Hampus Lindholm ? Dynamic defensively and as long as he doesn't have a Randy Carlyle style coach he should be 35 to 40 points. Hampus was always held back offensively by not getting PP minutes and the team overusing Fowler and his weak muffin shot on the PP but Lindholm managed to have 10goals or more three times in his career despite mostly defensive zone starts and no PP minutes.
