Hasn’t been many official announcements yet about USports players transferring. The optimist in me hopes maybe it’s not going to be that bad…but I’m guessing it’s just too early in the offseason yet.

Having said that, seeing Kale McCallum, arguably the best defenseman in the country, going to a school like Providence…and the Alberta guys rumoured to be going to Nebraska-Omaha….makes me think the big-time NCAA programs might not looking to U Sports.

Just curious having never seen McCallum or UNB play, were the big numbers put up by Keating somewhat attributable to playing with Kale or some of the other players in that lineup?

Similarly, how much of Kale's success was due to the depth of the Reds? And what can be expected of him playing in Hockey East?

Yes to all of the above lol.

He was an elite offensive d-man in the AUS and QMJHL who got to play on the greatest USports team ever . Good players benefit from playing with other good players .

I don’t think he is the best d-man I’ve seen at UNB but he’s definitely top 10. You could make an argument that Adam McCormick and Kade Landry were better during the time all 3 were at UNB but each of them would have been the number one guy on any other team.

No one really knows how this will translate in the NCAA because we haven’t seen this before.

We'll have to wait for the fall and see what these guys do.
Some will be top 6 F or top 3 D, but others will be role players and maybe get 10-12 games in.
There is no one that will be a Fantilli, Celebrini, Makar or Power.

McCallum's expertise on the power play had some positive impact on Keating's points, but Keating was Keating. Kale was not UNB's best d-man 2 years ago; I would also argue that McCormick and Landry were better. But it was a super-stacked team and McCallum earned a ton of points on UNB's lethal powerplay, and voters apparently are influenced by points more than two-way play.

McCallum I believe will do well on the power play in Hockey East. He has an NHL-quality shot. Offensively he might even thrive. Defensively, he's not an elite d-man.

As I said, I'm waiting to see how these guys slot in with their NCAA teams.

I'm not knocking anyone, but the UNB guys were big fish in a small pond. HE has some weak teams also and they may fare well against these teams.
